HAW HAW HAW HAW HAW WHATEVER COULD YOU MEAN?

Lol

not OP

It's funny (no pun intended), but that's the one scene I actually forgive, because it's supposed to be so stupid.

But Tidus was kind of over the top in a lot of scenes, even for a teenaged boy with emotional baggage.

(Anonymous) 2015-08-18 11:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Agreed. I think there are some talented VAs out there and all, but X's acting at best was neutral, and at its worst was really cringe-worthy (Yuna especially). I think the later Final Fantasies have better voice acting, I don't know if that's coincidence though.

I actually didn't mind Yuna's VA. Tidus', however... *shudder*

(Anonymous) 2015-08-18 11:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Tidus, I agree, had a bunch of badly delivered lines, but overall I thought it more or less fit the character of stupid bubbly jock. I think a lot of his cringe-worthy lines were cringe-worthy because of his character more than his VA?

Yuna was breathy and lifeless to me. I hate when they have English VAs try to sound like the Japanese VAs in this super "feminine", unnaturally high and gentle voice. I honestly hate Japanese VAs who do that, too, but anyway, Yuna just didn't sound like a person to me.

I think you're right that some of Tidus' cringe-worthiness comes from the lines themselves (particularly the narration), but there's something about his voice that just makes them extra grating (which is a shame, because I'm one of the five people on the planet who does like the character). It's...too much, if that makes any sense.

I feel Yuna's voice, on the other hand, is well-suited to her character. It is certainly very feminine and gentle, but that's also what she's like for most of the game. She's someone who's desperate to please and to receive validation from others and who constantly suppresses her own feelings. I think she seems lifeless because, in a way, she is -- up until she decides to fight against the system, at least.

It's not coincidence, because X was the first one to ever have voice acting and part of that first wave of voice acted RPGs. Xenosaga from yesterday was one and Tales of Symphonia was another. Grandia II was also around the same time, iirc, and you can reaally tell with that one, as much as I love evil Ariel.

FFX was okay for what it was at the time. The Japanese was also around the same quality, honestly. It was more of a surprise since those actors have done work before, but going back and listening to both makes how early it was pretty obvious.

Oh good now I'm remembering all the awkward laughing, thanks OP.

(Anonymous) 2015-08-18 11:41 pm (UTC)(link)
You mean the laughing at the point where it was supposed to be forced and awkward?

(Anonymous) 2015-08-18 11:52 pm (UTC)(link)
...is someone defending the FFX laugh scene? Wow. lol

People don't know this?

[personal profile] ex_earthshaker594 2015-08-19 01:06 am (UTC)(link)
I'm starting to think they don't. It's been about fourteen years and the youngest chunk of current fandom was probably age five to non-existent.

I personally consider every major console FF as the launch title for a new generation of fans, so XIII meant X was already ancient.

Well if it was supposed to be awkward... no I still don't like it but at least there's a reason for it?

I still don't think it sounded the way actual forced, awkward laughter sounds in real life. If that was what they were going for then I'd still say they failed.

It's pretty bad when you have trouble forcing forced laughter.

I never understood why people didn't get that. The laugh scene was supposed to be bad/awkward/cringeworthy, even in context you have the other characters going WTF at the scene and Tidus and Yuna talk about how stupid it was. It was even WORSE in the Japanese version believe it or not. There are far more awkward scenes and lines to use as an example, but the voice acting overall wasnt THAT horrible given it was one of the firsts in JRPGS.

When I think bad voice acting in video games, I think of this:

That one's classic. I'll also throw out this bad video game voice acting compilation, complete with dramatic lip syncing:

It bothers me how many people don't seem to understand how it was supposed to be bad. I don't care if people still think it sucks, but context is a thing. I remember someone once linking to the Japanese version of the scene to be all "look how much better Japanese voices are!!!" and It's just.........mind boggling.

(Anonymous) 2015-08-19 02:57 am (UTC)(link)
Tidus's lines were more terrible than the delivery and the laughing scene was supposed to be ridiculous, but I still shudder every time I think of "YUNIE WILL DIE, YOU KNOW?"

"You know"?! I know they shoehorned that particular verbal tic in to try and fit with the mouth flaps, but she ends up sounding like Paul Merton when he does that "dontchaknow" British accent in HIGNFY.

(Anonymous) 2015-08-19 04:40 am (UTC)(link)
I remember Code Lyoko was chock full of those "you know" kinds of verbal tics that nobody would ever say, and also sayingabunchofwordsreallyfastwithoutapause to make the dialogue fit the mouth flaps.
