I can't stand people who call themselves fans of something but then torrent the movie/game/book/show without buying it. If you were a fan, you would support the creative team.

I sort of agree. I mean unless you can't get in in your country... it just seems really lame to not support the creators who make the thing you love so much.

My thing is when it's a foreign property, and I am referring specifically to anime, and they make merchandise they refuse to sell to people outside of the country.

This is a constant source of frustration in my little Youtube fandom, where all the fans bitch and moan about ads, adblock like the wind, and then complain when the Youtubers resort to getting sponsors to make up their income. "Booooo, sellouts, HDU talk about your sponsor for 30 seconds of my time!!1"

I think the question of whether or not it's ethical to pirate is different from whether or not doing it keeps you from being a fan. If a person enjoys the material and talks about it in the fandom and creates or consumes fanart and fanfiction, how are they not a fan? Are fans obligated to do what's best for the creators? What about people who separate the art and the creator when it comes to people that they don't respect? Is someone who can't stand Orson Scott Card's positions but loves his books not a fan of the books?

I'm a fan of Doctor Who. I don't want to wait for it to come on tv (which has no ads and no one knows I'm watching, if a stone falls in the forest can anyone hear it?). I'm also poor. I cannot see the material harm and see the material benefit in torrenting something that makes me happy THAT I COULD NEVER PAY MONEY FOR ANYWAY.

Your moral scruples are bourgeois luxuries.

I used to torrent currently running shows that I could watch for free anyway, so they were saved on my computer, and I could watch with headphones, and not on the DVR. I'd say I was a fan.

What if you borrow said movie/game/book/show? You're not buying it then either, are you allowed to call yourself a fan?

Example: I own the entire series of Buffy. My best friend originally borrowed the box sets from me years ago and borrows them to this day every now and then. I only bought the whole series because I bought seasons 2, 3 and 5 and not having the rest felt weird to me. Haven't seen them in years, don't care about them anymore. Are you really trying to tell me she's less of a fan than I am of Buffy?

That said, by your definition getting stuff from a library also wouldn't count as being a fan, as one copy is shared by thousands of people. Libraries are like torrenting in regards with supporting the creative team, just on a smaller scale.

Let me guess, you're one of those "fans" that talk about supporting the creators and judge everyone who "doesn't" (according to your standards) while buying second hand copies or borrowing from friends/libraries which doesn't support the creators.

LOL my aunt had a statue of The Thinker sitting on a toilet, and I thought that's what the actual statue looked like until I was 10 or so and saw the original!

artists who complain about reposting/not sourcing, but have no issue torrenting or reblogging unsourced photos/recipes/whatever are pretty lame

For years I never realized that my family was rich, because the way we lived was much closer to how middle-class families are depicted in media than how upper-class families are depicted in media.

I literally did not know until one day when I was a teenager and my dad mentioned how much money he makes in a year while helping me with a math problem on my homework.

Same, kind of. Media depictions of income status are the reason I didn't realize one of my friends was rich (she doesn't live in a mansion! She doesn't have a butler or maids or take a limo to school!) and also how I didn't realize one of my other friends was poor (she doesn't live in a trailer park or shack! She doesn't wear worn out clothes and she has a TV and video games and toys!)
