There was NO REASON the kids couldn't have had it all, I mean their father did! Why did Yuki have to make herself helpless (I mean, obviously because the only way a female is desirable is by being demure and helpless but yeah)? Why was Ame's only option running off to the mountain and becoming a wolf?
Yeah, it made me sad, mostly over the potential of what could have been.

(Anonymous) 2015-08-23 08:19 pm (UTC)(link)I'm also starting to get annoyed with dichotomies anyway. I'm mixed race and one facet of me being visibly dominant doesn't change how complex finding an identity can be. Fantasy and sci-fi would be a good place to explore it and it's a toss-up whether they actually do (especially since it can always apply to a lot of identity concerns). It's not a new issue, but it gets exasperating.

(Anonymous) 2015-08-23 08:52 pm (UTC)(link)But I totally agree regarding Yuki. I wanted to punch the guy who kept following her after she avoided him. She enjoyed being a wolf so much, everything seemed OOC after she got that dress to fit in.
If one is generous it could be because the father had parents who were wolfmen themselves, but that would be unfair to the mother. She really tried to nurture their wolf side too!

And yeah, Yuki was totally ooc. The annoying thing is that I wish the ending for her would have been to realize that she can "fit in" on the surface, without sacrificing everything. Or just understanding that both of these are valid aspects of her.
I felt so sad for the mother. You're right, she really did try so hard!

(Anonymous) 2015-08-24 12:13 am (UTC)(link)Why couldn't both children grow into their strength, instead of this sexist scheme again?
If anything, her mother should have been an example to her- she fit into the community, but she never forced her children to be human. Ok, she kinda enabled this highschool boy... (bitter resentment!). It seemed like a very obvious arc, but maybe that's a different cultural reading.

(Anonymous) 2015-08-23 11:40 pm (UTC)(link)Ame's was also sad, though a little less frustrating. But I agree, there was no reason why he had to run off. He was still just a kid too.
I mostly felt bad for the mom. After everything, she was alone.

(Anonymous) 2015-08-23 11:41 pm (UTC)(link)I should add that I do think it's a very good movie. I just didn't like how it played out at the end.

(Anonymous) 2015-08-24 12:17 am (UTC)(link)I think it made sense for Ame, because as the mom said herself- 12 or how old he was, isn't mature for a human! But then she realizes that he's already an adult by wolf standard. I like to think that he might have visited her.
