2015's sucked a lot for anime, but I'm inclined to agree. Most people who go on about how good old anime is never really go past whatever a couple of ultra-gory OVAs and a couple of shows that Toonami aired. They were casually in it for the action and now that you've got to search for stuff since p. much everything is subbed, they don't bother.

Yep, if you're willing to look, there's tons of great action/scifi/fantasy/mindfuck stuff reminiscent of Toonami and [adultswim] glory days, and a good chunk of it is even dubbed (dubbing has come so fucking far, it's amazing), but you have to dig a lot. Hunting through the wilderness of anime for specific shit is a lot different than having it spoonfed to you via a network that always selects from the same genre (often from the same studios, too). I miss the ease of it, too, but I'm happy that the stuff I like still exists.

...So, what are those anime, since they're so good?

I think the only one of these I've actually seen is Mawaru Penguindrum (middle on the second row), which is...well, it's certainly something. Two orphan brothers save the life of their dying sister by agreeing to help a mysterious entity who possessed her find an ambiguous object called the Penguindrum. That's about 10% what it's about. It's a very, very strange show, and somewhat culturally impenetrable; I've heard it makes slightly more sense if you're familiar with semi-recent Japanese history and classic literature. Slightly. There's a lot of symbolism. And metaphors. And things that might be metaphors but possibly are real except their existence makes no sense in a non-fantastical society but is it a non-fantastical society and I don't even know, man. I don't know if I'd classify it as good so much as interesting; it's actually kind of unpleasant to watch at times, and the ending's kinda harsh. But it's definitely an example of non-boilerplate recent anime. And I should stop talking now.

Can someone name these shows please, specifically bottom right? I'd be interested in checking some of them out.

(Anonymous) 2015-08-23 08:01 pm (UTC)(link)
Dunno bottom right, but bottom left is Wolf Children, top left is Nichijou, and top right is Space Dandy. Don't recognize anything else, unfortunately.

(Anonymous) 2015-08-23 08:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Second panel in the middle is Mawaru Penguindrum (made by Utena director,) and the third panel in the middle is Ghibli's Kaguya which is excellent but gut-wrenching. I think the very bottom may be Kyousougiga.

I would recommend the latter two for sure.

Bottom right looks like Tatami Galaxy.

(Anonymous) 2015-08-23 08:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Bottom right is Tatami Galaxy.

Here is in the order, all the ones I recognized:

-Top left is Nichijou and top right is Space Dandy ♥
-Second row left is the animatorexpo short Sex and Violence with MacSpeed (and is the only one of the works I know pictured here that I found really bad), middle one is Mawaru Penguindrum ♥♥.
-Third row left is Uchouten Kazoku ♥♥♥, middle one is The Tale of Princess Kaguya ♥♥♥
-Bottom left is Wolf Children ♥, middle is Kyousougiga ♥ and like I said, right is Tatami Galaxy ♥♥

(Anonymous) 2015-08-23 08:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Top middle might be Shin Sekai Yori?

(Anonymous) 2015-08-27 09:53 pm (UTC)(link)
For completion's sake- from left to right, top to bottom:
Nichijou, dunno (possibly Shin Sekai Yori?), Space Dandy
Sex and violence with Machspeed, Mawaru Penguindrum, Cuushe - Airy me
Uchouten Kazoku, Kaguyahime, Soredemo Machi wa Mawaitteiru
Wolf Children, Kyousogiga, Tatami Galaxy

(Anonymous) 2015-08-23 07:59 pm (UTC)(link)
That's absolutely correct. Most people who talk about how anime sucks now have not looked beyond the anime that is popular with anime fans.

Yes well, I hated Wolf Children and its stupid dichotomy between wolf and person.
There was NO REASON the kids couldn't have had it all, I mean their father did! Why did Yuki have to make herself helpless (I mean, obviously because the only way a female is desirable is by being demure and helpless but yeah)? Why was Ame's only option running off to the mountain and becoming a wolf?

Yeah, it made me sad, mostly over the potential of what could have been.

(Anonymous) 2015-08-23 08:19 pm (UTC)(link)
I felt the same way, although a lot of it seemed weirdly paced and erratic once the time skip happened.

I'm also starting to get annoyed with dichotomies anyway. I'm mixed race and one facet of me being visibly dominant doesn't change how complex finding an identity can be. Fantasy and sci-fi would be a good place to explore it and it's a toss-up whether they actually do (especially since it can always apply to a lot of identity concerns). It's not a new issue, but it gets exasperating.

(Anonymous) 2015-08-23 08:52 pm (UTC)(link)
It made sense for Ame, because he was disconnected from his human side and felt like he had a permanent duty to uphold after the fox died (?).

But I totally agree regarding Yuki. I wanted to punch the guy who kept following her after she avoided him. She enjoyed being a wolf so much, everything seemed OOC after she got that dress to fit in.

If one is generous it could be because the father had parents who were wolfmen themselves, but that would be unfair to the mother. She really tried to nurture their wolf side too!

Yuki (the girl, right?) was the biggest disappointment in that film. It felt like her character growth was losing her natural self and conforming to what a human girl ought to be. You can tell she's sad at first, trying to fit in with her female friends, and eventually she just loses all of her strength. Her character climax was waiting for her "wolfness" to re-emerge but it felt like it never did, her story just fell flat into a high school love confession. wtf.

Ame's was also sad, though a little less frustrating. But I agree, there was no reason why he had to run off. He was still just a kid too.

I mostly felt bad for the mom. After everything, she was alone.

Just like with old cartoons and movies, when people reminisce about the "good old days of anime" they are forgetting all the terrible shit that came out at the same time as the stuff they love, but everyone forgot.

(Anonymous) 2015-08-23 08:41 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't think anime movies should count since they are much more compact story-wise and they have a bigger budget. Tv Shows are tougher to market and I think they've been playing it too safe so that they can ensure sales since the economy has suffered so much.

There are also people like me who still love the look of cell-animation vs the digital heavy ones. I think they were drawn better in general.

I'm just a grumpy old casual consumer of anime who genuinely prefers late 80s/early-to-mid-90s anime. I'm sure there's more recent gems, but I'm happy enough with things like Patlabor and Akira that I feel no real desire to explore further.

(Anonymous) 2015-08-23 09:28 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm pleasantly surprised nobody's gone on about how all modern anime is really just pedo-pandering yet.

(Anonymous) 2015-08-23 09:34 pm (UTC)(link)
well especially because the prospects were so much worse ten years ago, every other anime was moe garbage. if anything it's improved since then, everything ebbs and flows in quality.
