It's Hannibal.

(Anonymous) 2015-08-24 11:20 pm (UTC)(link)
same.

i think it all goes back to the male gaze. even the lesbians have to be there for men to find attractive. rme

(Anonymous) 2015-08-24 11:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Totally. Butch lesbians are just useless aren't they?

(Anonymous) 2015-08-24 11:36 pm (UTC)(link)
...that was sarcasm by the way.

(Anonymous) 2015-08-24 11:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Props to OITNB for Big Boo.

(Anonymous) 2015-08-24 11:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Prison dramas are the one place where you can get butch women, cos they're already corrupt. See: Prisoner. Also movies about murderous dykes, eg Monster.

SA Should clarify that I think that's an awesome show, and I don't think it's any problems at all with the show, just that women like that are unlikely to be funded/greenlit for television by execs in other contexts.

(Anonymous) 2015-08-25 12:13 am (UTC)(link)
AYRT

Good point. I love the characters on the show so much, sometimes I legit forget that they're actually criminals.

(Anonymous) 2015-08-25 12:19 am (UTC)(link)
Not commenting on this particular character, but I think with LGBT representation if the writer isn't LGBT themselves (and sometimes even if they are) there's this sort of 'damned if you do/damned if you don't' mentality.

Butch lesbian? "NOT ALL LESBIANS HAVE A BUZZCUT AND WEAR JEAN JACKETS!" crowd comes out.
Femme lesbian? "YOU JUST MADE HER PRETTY FOR THE MENS!! crowd comes out.
Femme gay guy? "UGH NOT ALL GAY GUYS TALK LIKE THAT/ETC!" crowd comes out.
'Straight acting' gay guy? "YOU'RE JUST PLAYING IT SAFE, WTF! crowd comes out.

Not saying that more main representation of all types of everyone wouldn't help ease that, but I do feel like right now when we're sort of straddling some sort of 'there's representation but not a lot' line I think people are preparing to get their faces bitten off either way, sadly.

(Anonymous) 2015-08-25 12:26 am (UTC)(link)
The obvious solution to this is to simply have more gay characters in your cast. Then you can have butches, femmes, and everything in between. Boom: Problem solved, everyone's happy.

(Anonymous) 2015-08-25 12:28 am (UTC)(link)
SA

I agree completely. As long as they don't do some weird, "and here's this clique of femme lesbians"/"and here's this clique of butch lesbians" and never the twain shall meet.

(Anonymous) 2015-08-25 12:54 am (UTC)(link)
"You have a butch and femme pair to imitate straight couples/ be a stereotype / you're being sexist / a butch and femme can be straight friends stop erasing!"
"Two butch are unrealistic!"
"Two femme are unrealistic!"
"More than two lesbians are unrealistic!"
"If they're not perfect characters they're shallow pandering and you should be insulted!"

(Seriously wtf gay ppl aren't friends with each other?)

(Anonymous) 2015-08-25 01:05 am (UTC)(link)
I'm gay and so are many of my friends! What, do straight writers think we intentionally avoid each other and that there can only be one gay person occupying a given social group?

Like, Lesbian #1 stakes a claim on all of her straight friends and has to defend her territory by chasing off other lesbians that get too close?

That's silly. No one does that IRL.

(Anonymous) 2015-08-25 02:51 am (UTC)(link)
If anything you have the token straight friend...

(Anonymous) 2015-08-25 01:07 am (UTC)(link)
Everything is problematic.

Thanks, Tumblr!

(Anonymous) 2015-08-25 02:50 am (UTC)(link)
Oh anon you're so young and naive. These are before tumblr.

(Anonymous) 2015-08-25 02:05 pm (UTC)(link)
Tumblr made it much worse, don't try to deny it.

(Anonymous) 2015-08-25 02:49 am (UTC)(link)
No, the answer is that we need to have a healthy cultural ecosystem with regards to representation in media in general, so that every gay character doesn't become a referendum on representation.

Although of course having more gay characters in your cast is a good thing all told.

(Anonymous) 2015-08-25 12:32 am (UTC)(link)
The writer for the show is a gay man fwiw.

(Anonymous) 2015-08-25 01:20 am (UTC)(link)
As a lesbian I've had enough anti-butch comments from gay men to last a lifetime.

(Anonymous) 2015-08-25 03:29 am (UTC)(link)
And lesbians say horrible things about gay men. Just look at ONTD.

(Anonymous) 2015-08-25 06:03 am (UTC)(link)
And that invalidates my point that a gay male writer is no proof against anti-butch sentiment how?

Actually how does this anti-gay male sentiment manifest? Is it a bunch of dykes calling em out for sexism or wot?
