Prison dramas are the one place where you can get butch women, cos they're already corrupt. See: Prisoner. Also movies about murderous dykes, eg Monster.

Not commenting on this particular character, but I think with LGBT representation if the writer isn't LGBT themselves (and sometimes even if they are) there's this sort of 'damned if you do/damned if you don't' mentality.

Butch lesbian? "NOT ALL LESBIANS HAVE A BUZZCUT AND WEAR JEAN JACKETS!" crowd comes out.
Femme lesbian? "YOU JUST MADE HER PRETTY FOR THE MENS!! crowd comes out.
Femme gay guy? "UGH NOT ALL GAY GUYS TALK LIKE THAT/ETC!" crowd comes out.
'Straight acting' gay guy? "YOU'RE JUST PLAYING IT SAFE, WTF! crowd comes out.

Not saying that more main representation of all types of everyone wouldn't help ease that, but I do feel like right now when we're sort of straddling some sort of 'there's representation but not a lot' line I think people are preparing to get their faces bitten off either way, sadly.

(Anonymous) 2015-08-25 12:26 am (UTC)(link)
The obvious solution to this is to simply have more gay characters in your cast. Then you can have butches, femmes, and everything in between. Boom: Problem solved, everyone's happy.

Yeah, there is almost no butch representation in the media, and even less where they are a real character and not a gag or whatever. I never bought Fuller's excuse, she was made feminine cause that is more marketable.

(Anonymous) 2015-08-24 11:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, because Fuller obviously cares so much about making "Hannibal" more marketable... Just when everybody started to say "men, TV shows need more snails" and "why aren't snails on Hannibal?" I just knewwe were going to get lots of snails on "Hannibal". Or that time when Hannibal forced Gideon to eat parts of his own body and I was like "oh, yes, Fuller, ffs, don't take any risks, be that bland that even Disney Channel looks indie next to you".

(Anonymous) 2015-08-24 11:42 pm (UTC)(link)
DA Marketable to men, who supposedly like both gross things and hot chicks.

More like she was made feminine cause feminine women are more beautiful than butch women. Look at her clothes, makeup and hairstyles. She looks absolutely gorgeous all the time. This show is all about being stunningly beautiful and classy.

I didn't know that the character was originally butch!

Wouldn't have minded that at all, but I do like the actress that was chosen for the role. She's done a great job, but as with the rest of the show... It apparently doesn't follow the source material too closely.

(Anonymous) 2015-08-25 12:36 am (UTC)(link)
In the book, Margot is a steroid addicted female body builder and pretty much ticks all the stereotype butch lesbian boxes you can think of. She's virtually transgender without being transgender (if that makes sense). It's heavily implied in the book that Margot is a butch lesbian because of what Mason did to her.

I love Thomas Harris, but he's not exactly...Tumblr-friendly with his characters ;)

I love Margot in the series and as a reasonably butch lesbian, I don't really mind her character change. Fuller hasn't made her a stereotype and her sexuality is just a thing about her rather than the result of years of horrific sexual abuse at the hands of her twin brother.

(Anonymous) 2015-08-25 12:46 am (UTC)(link)
I understand why her character in the books might offend some but she was probably one of the most sympathetic characters and had a well defined character arc.

Yeah, I would love to see more butch lesbians on TV (I am not one, but I date one!) but there were really nasty and dated implications in the book and I would rather Fuller got rid of those and had a femme Margot than the opposite. Of course, best would be a butch lesbian Margot without being butch or a lesbian because of the abuse, but can't have everything (yet).

(Anonymous) 2015-08-25 06:56 am (UTC)(link)
Oh god. And if they hadn't you'd be the first people to yell stereotyping.

[personal profile] litalex 2015-08-25 09:40 am (UTC)(link)
Huh, didn't know that. But I'm glad that there is any lesbian at all, butch or not isn't a problem for me.

(Anonymous) 2015-08-25 10:19 pm (UTC)(link)
She was probably chosen because

A) she's a cult horror actress (Ginger Snaps 1-3, American Mary, Freddy vs Jason)

and

B) she's a Hannibal fan

And fyi I think the reason why Margot was a butch in the book is more problematic. Not to say butches don't deserve any screentime - I'm butch myself. I love representation. I love Margot in the book, but lbr, her character was a bit... lacking.

Go back to Tumblr, you ugly dyke.

I don't find her nose or grimace conventionally attractive.
