Co-freakin'-signed. Esp. the "cute and lighthearted thing is secretly dark and edgy and horrible" ones--those are always the most boring ones, and usually seem to be thrown together by people who can't accept that they just like a cute and lighthearted thing, and thus need to make it into something it's not to make it "acceptable."

IDK, the cute-and-lighthearted-is-actually-dark-and-edgy thing CAN be pretty fun -- as long as the people doing it are doing it as a fun "hey, wouldn't it be interesting if..." thing, and not taking it that seriously.

It can be fun then, but all too often, it's the 2edgy kind of people taking it too seriously!

And they're so often combined with "secretly evil" too. OMG something isn't perfect, that means they're EVUL!

Agreed with all of these!

I have nothing against "secretly evil" in theory, but most of the time it feels like people don't understand that a good person can have bad sides or done something bad without being evil (or vice versa).

It gets ridiculous when they take the character attempting to do good only for it to later end up badly/make things worse as proof that they're evil. Er, no, typically it just means they can't look into the future or had bad judgment.
