.....

...Okay, so this is approximately the most brilliant parallel I've ever seen anyone make between fandoms. Kudos!!!

I always wished that Ginny's experiences with Tom Riddle had been expanded on and discussed more in the books. I think Ginny had tons of potential and I would have been way more interested in her and her relationship with Harry if the Riddle thing had been more centrally incorporated into her character.

I hadn't really thought of this but I totally agree!!

Lost potential there :(

I agree. It's actually given me a lot of headcanon fuel. For example I see Ginny as being something of an atoner afterward and she gets so into things like the DA and stuff because she wants to learn to defend herself and never be taken advantage of again, and she still has a hard time forgiving herself for it for the longest time, and probably only talks about it with a few people.

Ginny is also stubborn and due to her background being the youngest girl in a family full of brothers, who probably wants to be seen as one of them and not as "the girl" she is 'tough' about things. To some degree she tries to exude an image of a tough girl who can deal with anything.

Really all these headcanons have made her a more interesting character in my mind.

(Anonymous) 2015-09-06 09:08 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, exactly! Probably the part of the books I liked her most in was during Order of the Phoenix, when she tells Harry to get over himself because she knew what being possessed felt like a lot better than he did, and understood his problems in a way that Ron and Hermione just couldn't because they hadn't had that experience.

...and there are seven items in both too. And Ginny's blackouts where she has no idea what's going on and thinks she's going insane...I know there's no way JKR could have ripped off YGO, it came out way too soon before Sorcerer's Stone, but now I'd bet anything both franchises were ripping off the same earlier sources or sets of tropes from earlier fantasy/horror material.

I think it's more a coincidence, and both of them building on lots of well-known fantasy tropes. 7 being a magical number is hardly new, so having two sets of "7 magical items" of some sort is hardly unique or groundbreaking.
Furthermore, the idea of extending life by hiding away the heart is also a well-known trope, and I'd assume Rowling was having the Horcruxes be a kind of version of that. Possessed objects that possess people are also a well-known trope.
There's nothing specific enough here to warrant "ripping off", imo.

ayrt

Oh yeah, I meant "rip-off" in an affectionate way -- "good writers borrow, great writers steal" sort of thing. Building upon centuries of fantasy lore and folktales is not a bad thing. ;)

Using storytelling tropes/concepts from a variety of sources isn't ripping off. Nobody owns the concept of possession causing blackouts, or thinking one is going insane from them. In fact I possessions causing black outs makes perfect sense, and a person thinking they are going insane seems like a rational reaction to it.

People really need to learn what 'ripping off' means.

Derp I just read your comment above. I apologize for taking it seriously. I've come from some writing circles where people used to be quick with accusations of ripping off all the time, so it's an old frustration of mine.

Season 0 of yugioh is pretty much identical to what was what going on with Ginny off-page all throughout Chamber of Secrets, the only difference is that Atem had no memory and therefore no agenda beyond protecting Yugi, while Riddle remembered everything Voldemort remembered and therefore had a big master plan (though no vice versa).

That's some really good fanart.

I should clarify that I do not ship Riddle/Ginny at all, but I find their relationship ultra-fascinating.

Same, same, and same. This would be a great fic.

Elaborate?

(Anonymous) 2015-09-06 08:51 pm (UTC)(link)
I think I understand what you mean from your note in parentheses, but I've never seen Yu-Gi-Oh so I'm not 100% sure.

Re: Elaborate?

The premise of yu-gi-oh is that a teenager named Yugi Mutou is given a puzzle that is an artifact from ancient Egypt and after years of working on it, finally solves it. However, when he solves it, he awakens a spirit inside it. Said spirit will spontaneously take over Yugi's body whenever Yugi or one of his friends is bullied, put in danger, or otherwise wronged, and dole out epic disproportionate retribution upon the person who hurt them via tricking the bad guy into playing gambling games and then inflicting a mind-rape and driving them insane (or killing and maiming them with electrocution, death by being set on fire, etc) on them when they inevitably lose.

For a while in the beginning, Yugi would have blank patches in his memory while the spirit was in control (just like Ginny) and wake up in a completely different place going "wtf how did I get here?" and had no idea what was happening, he thought he was just losing his mind and was afraid that he was the one who was randomly terrorizing people around him. But then he eventually figured out that the spirit was a separate entity and started being conscious while the spirit took over. At the same time, the spirit steadily became less and less evil so he and the spirit became friends and allies -- it turned out that the spirit was actually a good guy, a Pharaoh from ancient Egypt who had sacrificed his soul to save his people, but his memory was lost when he did it and according to the writer, he had then gone batshit insane from being trapped in the puzzle for so long, and he mellowed out over time and re-learned compassion and kindness due to the influence of Yugi and his friends.

So I guess, if the horcrux in the diary had absorbed Ginny's good qualities rather than overwhelming her from start to finish, it would be a lot like yu-gi-oh in a lot of ways.

IDK they're kind of scattered around I think. But they keep popping up here and there in the reblog circuit.
