You found Iron Man to be the villain of the Civil War comics? Really? I thought that, all the "futurist" bullshit motivation aside, Iron Man's position was a much more logical and ethically more realistic position than Captain America's position. Except for, of course, the evil brainwashed cloned Thor thing, but wasn't that explained away by Skrulls or something?

Actually, just thinking about the hot mess that was Civil War gives me something of a headache. I can't remember what was retconned or not.

Anyway, why does it bother you that people like Tony Stark, OP? Is it because you think his popularity as a character is distracting people from your favorite? Because you sound kinda bitter here and that's not the way to "fix" your fandom...

Not villainous? What about the Negative Zone prison? The retaining of psychopaths?

Fair points.

I'm actually not much of a fan of Tony Stark at all, particularly as portrayed in those comics, but he wasn't completely morally WRONG in his insistence on an actual rule of LAW.

He may have been the villain, but I don't think he was knowingly evil and I don't think Captain America did the right thing, either.

I didn't feel that way going into the story. I didn't know much about Iron Man at the time, and I thought Civil War would be a story where both sides of the issue were presented fairly, with neither side clearly being in the right (maybe I was naive). But the way the story played out, Iron Man's pro-registration side was so OBVIOUSLY bad (not to mention blatantly aping the Patriot Act) that I started getting a little annoyed at the one-sidedness of the story. And then, at the end of the whole thing, the Pro-Registration side wins and Iron Man becomes director of S.H.I.E.L.D. It just felt so cynical and bitter that I directed my hatred for the whole arc onto the leader of the Pro-Registration group, which happened to be Tony Stark. I probably would have felt the same way regardless of who was in charge.

I tried not to let my feelings for the comics bleed through onto the movie version, since they were different continuities, but Stark's arrogant jerk nature*, coupled with Hype Aversion, just led to me getting sick of him.

I would never say any of this to Tony/MCU fans unanon/out loud, of course. This secret was mostly just an excuse for me to vent.

*I know for a lot of people that's counterbalanced by him having charisma and a good moral compass, but that didn't happen for me, for some reason.

Yeah, I wish Civil War had been what you were expecting, too. I also thought at the time that it should have been reversed, that Captain America -- based on prior pro-government characterization -- should have been pro-Registration.

I was really annoyed obvious slant of the story, too. And the whole thing turning out to be a Skrull conspiracy to set up an invasion for the next crossover arc made everything seem like an exercise in futility.

I understand the Tony Stark aversion -- never been a big fan of him in comics. Vent away, it's all good fun here!

You have explained exactly why the comics fucked it up. Under no circumstances should that storyline have allowed any sane person to reach that conclusion. Registration was wrong, internment was wrong, government backed terror against its own population was wrong. That Marvel somehow thought it was right and could be somehow justified is a horrific act in and of itself. They should have been explicit on anyone reaching your conclusion being either a moron (medically speaking) or evil, but instead they pandered to the post-9/11 paranoia just when we needed someone to stand up and oppose it.

Bastards, the lot of you.

I don't expect the movie version to be any better though, it'll be full of the same post-9/11 bullshit. It is going to take decades to undo the damage Bush/Cheney/Murdoch did to the psyche of so many nations. They gave the terrorists every real victory they could ever want. They did more damage than Bin laden could dream of.

If you are a guy, and believe what you've stated, then go stick your dick in a blender. If you are a woman, well the republicans already have control of your body so you are already damned.

Interesting, I've heard a lot of grumbling about Civil War but not political context like this, which makes sense to me.

Dude. Whoa.

I am a staunch liberal and feminist, but I also believe in accountability. The pro-Registration side was all about the accountability of the superheroes. It's the same reason more police forces are adopting body-cameras for their cops.

The Patriot Act is bullshit and the post-9/11 era Bush presidency was a horrific violation of personal freedoms, but the idea that vigilante justice should go unrestrained by law is ludicrous. A lot of the Civil War comic was terrible pandering to paranoia and very heavy-handed, but the original idea wasn't.

I also think that you need to re-read my original comment, because your reply was so far over the top that you come off as strident and unreasonable.
