Well, be prepared for a lot of people not wanting to have to suffer your nonsense to be your friend.

I like both characters, OP, but I like them because they are complicated. Both of them can be abrasive and not willing to listen to the opinions of others, and that isn't really a trait you should want to emulate.

(Anonymous) 2015-09-12 08:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, like the others have said, being abrasive, preachy, and a general know-it-all made the characters interesting but won't get you many friends.

(Anonymous) 2015-09-12 09:18 pm (UTC)(link)
So you want to be a smarmy, self-superior know-it-all?

Don't we have enough of those with people like Herpy and Dethtoll?

(Anonymous) 2015-09-12 09:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Well to be honest as far as opinionated soapbox sadie characters go I'd say that these two are a little better than well other choices.

For example, as much as I like her as a character, Sam Manson from Danny Phantom wouldn't be the best person to try to be like because she has a habit of being hypocritical and pretty pushy with her friends sometimes. And the fact that the canon seemed to approve of it made it worse. At least some of the time Hermione's canon acknowledged that she wasn't always going about things in the right way.

Sam belongs to the type of Soapbox Sadie I find worse because, as I remember it, the canon didn't side so much with her until... the latter part of season 2 I think? It was part of her, but it didn't define her.

When I was around Lisa's age in the early-mid 90s heyday of The Simpsons she was my favourite character because I related to the fact she was "bright" and often felt picked on/isolated by her peers as a result.

Then I got older and noticed it wasn't always her intelligence that rubbed people the wrong way. She is overly opinionated and abrasive sometimes. That's not necessarily always a bad thing but people in general don't react well to it.

I'm sightly too old to have got the same "wow she's me" feeling from Hermione but I sill do feel for her at times. Other times I don't agree with her actions.

Anyway, they're not bad characters to emulate but sometime when we see ourselves in characters I think we can end up downplaying or ignoring their flaws. Just don't lose sight of your own identity I guess?

The only negative traits I remember is that they're both tattle-tales (well, Hermione got better) and they both got violently jealous one time. I think people feel negatively about their competitiveness but if they were boys nobody would give them shit.

Hermione was also a nagging SJW about the house elves, but that's good, because nobody (except maybe Dumbledore) took the elves seriously. Can't hate her for that or even be annoyed.

And, well, Lisa wants to become the president. Can't hate her ambition.

I used to like Lisa until I realized she just lives to protest and complain and then the Peewee football episode happened and proved that I was right.

Hermione...eh I got nothing. Not my favorite or least favorite. I like her a lot better than Ginny.

Good for you!

There was a time I did like Hermione and Lisa because I was the 'smart girl' in all my classes, but now that I look back they were kinda annoying. My sister and some of her friends also thought I was annoying because I was always correcting them.

Though I do remember even as a kid I found Hermione and her S.P.E.W thing to be really annoying. Reminds me of tumblr SJW for some reason.

(Anonymous) 2015-09-14 08:15 am (UTC)(link)
Probably because Hermione didn't think to ask the house elves what they wanted. IIRC they stopped cleaning in the Gryffindor Tower because they were offended by how Hermione had started to hide clothes that'd free them underneath piles of other stuff.

Being the smart girl who always raised her hand and had all the answers was a great identity for me ... until the morning of our senior class breakfast when it turned out I was named our class's "biggest babbler". It's still one of the most humiliating moments of my life twenty years later. Having to walk up on that stage and accept it like it was some award, learning that that was how the majority of four hundred kids saw me, is something I'll never forget. I can hardly say a word at a party or anywhere else now without thinking I've said too much.

Be careful what you wish for, OP.

(Anonymous) 2015-09-13 01:30 am (UTC)(link)
I'm really sorry you were embarrassed, but is it possible that the reason for the award was different? Like you're very well-spoken? If it was meant in a mean way the school should be ashamed for even letting that be an award.

(Anonymous) 2015-09-13 02:14 am (UTC)(link)
Sadly, no, it was what they thought was a joke. I don't remember the exact wording anymore, but the boy and I (there was a boy and girl awarded in each category) were introduced basically as the pair that never shut up. Alphabetically we were always sat next to each other in class, too, and they pointed out that we got each other going. I remember sitting in the dark with some friends and not wanting them to let anyone know I was there, but they kept encouraging me to go up and get it over with. Am I well-spoken? Sure. I was on the speech team and went to state. But no, it wasn't meant as a compliment. There were a couple "awards" that year that I look back on them now and wonder who could've approved them. I remember not voting in homeroom for quite a few of them because I thought they were mean.

Thank you for trying to put a positive spin on it, though. That has to be the kindest thing I've heard all day.

Wow anon, I'm sorry that sounds awful.

Who thought it was a good idea to use those as awards.

(Anonymous) 2015-09-13 03:37 am (UTC)(link)
What the hell were the teachers thinking?

I'm just flabbergasted. Sorry that happened to you, OP.

(Anonymous) 2015-09-13 03:40 am (UTC)(link)
nayrt

Kids can be cruel sometimes. I was a "good" student in school (would probably have been streamed as gifted if the concept had existed then). Never realized how much the other kids resented it until we had a spelling bee and I got a word wrong for the first time. The class burst into loud applause. It was a useful lesson, but not the most pleasant one.

(Anonymous) 2015-09-13 03:52 am (UTC)(link)
Geez.

That's really awful. I'm sorry you had to deal with that.

Being well-spoken and genuinely engaged in/passionate about whatever you're discussing is a good thing. It's a trait I wish I had more of. I hope you are now in, or can find, a place where you can use your speaking talents, and they can be welcome and appreciated.

I like both characters, mainly for their intelligence, though I don't plan to emulate them.
