That's so ridiculous and worrying. What if someone has a child who is seriously ill and they delay getting treatment for them because they don't want to be deported?

Exactly. No matter your views on immigration, there are some places where people should not be reported to ICE. Doctors offices should be safe. Also when reporting a crime to the police. The grocery store. People should be allowed to live safely with their families, and that should be protected.

Yes to all of those things.

We can't deny even people convicted of crimes the right to food, healthcare, and safety.

It seems like backwards logic, too. "We can't let these people get too comfortable, or they might start to get ideas. They might start contributing to the economy!"

Immigrants are treated worse than violent criminals. The conditions in detention centers is appalling. Some of the absolute worst ones on the border have been closed, but those ones were so horrifying that anything would look better (look up Artesia detention center if you want to know about them). But the ones that still remain are pretty bad too. No one would be allowed to have a regular prison like that.

Oh lord. Don't get me started. We now have laws to prevent doctors in detention facilities from trying to advocate for their patients, including young children. I'm not sure if this article talks about the frequency of self-harm and violence inside the centre, but some of the accounts from people who have worked there are absolutely shocking.

Children should not be in detention centres. Nobody should be in detention centres.

I don't know if I want to look up Artesia today. I'm already full of rage.

The attorney I interned with told me horror stories of representing clients who were in border detention centers and being restricted from accessing them (which is so completely illegal, but they get away with it anyway).

Basically, supposedly the Supreme Court has said that constitutional rights apply to immigrants, but that does not seem to be the case in practice.

And yes, don't look up Artesia unless you really want to be angry. This is what I want to do with my life. And while feeling like I can help some of them even just a little is amazing, the horror stories I hear both about conditions here in the US and about the things they went through back home because I've mostly done asylum cases makes me want to cry and punch things.

I'm actually glad I have such an active online/fandom life because I feel like when I get into this for real, it is going to be the thing that saves me so I can function and keep doing the job and then come home and leave that stuff at work.

Ugh. People suck. The world sucks. I really hate learning how little our laws do to protect vulnerable people.
When I worked for a firm that handled ICL cases (basically we represent the child and make our recommendations to the family court based on their best interests) it was rough as hell. Some days you get handed files and you just know you don't want to open them because they're going to be bad.

It's good to have a way to switch off. My boss introduced me to her favourite coping strategy: taking business lunches at the weird hipster place in town where all the waiters are ridiculously good looking and flirty. Excellent coping strategy. Would recommend.

It's good to feel like you're on the right side of things, even when you can't do much.

Hospitals' first priority should be helping and treating people. Not putting profit over people's health or refusing people necessary care for BS reasons (religious beliefs, political views, etc.). Why the hell is that sort of behavior considered okay and acceptable in this country?
