Thailand has universal health care, and despite being many magnitudes poorer, way before the US.

In London there are assigned seats at the movie theater and it costs more to sit in the middle rows.

I think sometimes it surprises me when European countries are less liberal than my brain thinks they are. And when they do bad things, especially when it comes to human rights things. Because the US is so bad on that front and I've always thought of Europe as much more socialist and just better.

Just out of curiosity, about how old are you? For instance, do you remember when the Berlin wall came down?

I'm 30. I meant now. Countries like England and France and Germany are currently pretty liberal and socialist. They at least have way more social programs than the US does. And so I'm surprised when I see new restrictions on these things when that is just different from what I picture of modern Europe. I don't expect them to be as bad as us.

Tbf European countries are vastly different from each other. Some European countries don't even belong to the European Union, so their laws can be completely different.

Like I would never visit Russia, but I wouldn't mind living in Norway or Denmark for example. (Iceland, Norway, Switzerland and Netherlands are thought to be the most liberal countries in the world right after New Zealand.)

When I was younger and went to England (my first trip out of the U.S.) I was surprised by how expensive food was. I didn't know then that food in the U.S. is really cheap in comparison, which means lower prices at grocery stores as well as restaurants.

Re: stuff that surprised you about other countries

(Anonymous) 2015-09-15 02:26 am (UTC)(link)
lmao and here I thought England was cheap as fuck (seriously, when I visited I felt like I was in money paradise)

I had no idea US was even cheaper?? wtf

(Anonymous) 2015-09-15 02:47 am (UTC)(link)
The USA both produces a fucking ridiculous amount of food and has a pretty good amount of subsidization of food prices, so yeah, the food is real fuckin cheap

(Anonymous) 2015-09-15 03:32 am (UTC)(link)
In terms of food, yes. Our restaurants don't have service charges (because they pay the servers peanuts and expect them to make a decent living via tips, which is fucked up but another issue) and our portions are enormous and free refills of your soft drink is the norm.

England is cheap?!?!?! I'm an American living in London, and everything is soooo expensive. Granted, it's London, and my home in America is a smaller town, but I hate to think that it could get more expensive than this!

That the USA is A LOT more liberal than Australia in a lot ways

Seriously, it blew my mind that gay marriage was legal in the USA first. Among other things.

Most of us are pretty embarrassed, but yes.
Gay marriage, climate change, conservation, healthcare, education - all apparently unimportant to our government.

Our Liberal party are also not what you would think of as a Liberal party. They're similar to the Republican party in the US.

"They're similar to the Republican party in the US."

Eh…I wouldn't go that far. You have to really ride the crazy train to catch up to the Republican Party.

It's been an embarrassing couple of years.

People on the left tend to have a background assumption that most other places in the first world are liberal left paradises.

This is not true.

Don't know if this counts but I watch French Let's Players a lot and it always surprises me how much random English they throw in. Like "wait" or "please" or just the occasionally phrase.

Apparently Russians really despise gingers. Which makes me like Russia a lot less for obvious reasons.

This really really depends on which Russian person you talk to. Mostly, this is not actually a thing in major metropolitan areas.

Australia is FULL OF RESTAURANTS.

And not like the USA is full of restaurants (which are mostly chains or garbage), but actual good restaurants serving world class food. Color me surprised and impressed.

I'm pretty sure we've had this argument before, so I'm not hopeful that you're amenable to reason on this one, but the US does have good restaurants. Mostly concentrated in a few fairly specific places, and not as many as it ought, which is a shame, but they absolutely exist.

We've had several of our formative ethic migrant groups be people who have great cuisines, and the first and easiest way of starting a business? Food. That might start out at take-away level but people get ambitious and go upmarket... and restaurants happen. This happens with every ethnic group - some new group comes in? They start selling their food, then restaurants happen.

At least that's my theory.

Yikes, where in the US have you been hiding away and not branching out besides chains? This kind of sounds like maybe something you've just avoided, rather than doesn't exist.

I couldn't get burritos in Mexico. Apparently burritos are Mexican-AMERICAN.
