Buying cheap in Tokyo?

[personal profile] supermanda 2015-09-14 11:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Good cafes?
"Good" meaning a nice mixture of cheap in price / good quantities for the price, and pleasant taste. I'd go for coffee, but I'm open to trying other stuff.

I'm living in Akasaka, close to Roppongi. I read online that Espresso Americano is good! I didn't see anything on prices though. Cheap is important!

Clothes! Preferably thrift shops.
Any good ones that any of you know about in Shibuya? I can take the train, so anywhere is fine, really! I came across a lovely one about 15 minutes (walking) from the apartment I'm staying at, but there were no changing rooms. I didn't want to blindly purchase anything, but I'm not sure if no changing rooms in thrift shops is a common thing?

I'm staying here for 3 months. I won't be doing any serious shopping for a while - I'm just doing research for now! Any tips, advice, recommendations, etc. are all welcome :3

You will never find cheap coffee in Japan. I'm sorry. It does not exist.

Thrift/consignment exists, but usually the cheapest clothes are to be found in boutiques outside of train stations in the ONE SIZE category. You can find some crazy interesting fashion in Japan but you really have to hunt if you want deals.

Yes it does, at local places. Starbucks and such, no, it's always going to be expensive. But you can get a filter coffee for cheap at many mom and pop type places.

What do you mean by cheap, though? I mean, most chains and such are not going to give you anything under one or two hundred yen, and it's more if you're going to Starbucks or something. You could see if there are any local restaurants/tea houses around you, they might do something cheaper. But since you're in Akasaka/Roppongi, sounds like you're most likely in a very "high town" area. But once you get off the main roads, maybe there's something?

The cheapest option though? 自動販売機/Jidouhanbaiki. :P That is, vending machines. It comes in cans and I don't have the most refined tastes, but I loved that stuff. You can even get it hot! Or convenience stores. When we were feeling cheap, we'd just buy some coffees and hang out in a park. Since there are loads of beautiful parks, this is much more fun, imo. If you're there three months you'll get to catch the autumn leaves on the trees, which is almost as exciting in Japan as sakura season.

I never shopped at a thrift store, but I should think changing rooms would be a thing? They certainly are in any other clothing store. Maybe just ask if they have one? But no idea. There are some pretty big flea markets and such as well you could check out.

Hope you have a great stay!
