(Anonymous) 2015-09-15 11:22 pm (UTC)(link)I know I wouldn't have an abortion past the first trimester though, barring severe medical issues.

(Anonymous) 2015-09-15 11:25 pm (UTC)(link)I don't think I'm mentally or emotionally capable of raising a child with a mental disability; physical disability would depend on what you're saying? Paraplegic? Quadriplegic? Limbs missing?
It would depend for me, and would really depend on whether or not the doctor's thought the child's quality of life would be. Would they only live a couple of months before dying a miserable death? (Like, with extreme lissencephaly?) Than yes, I would abort.

Yes, well depends on the disability, but yes.
Re: Would you/have you gotten an abortion?
(Anonymous) 2015-09-15 11:35 pm (UTC)(link)This was actually a discussion my mother had with myself and my sister when she was pregnant with our brother.
I was 10 when she got pregnant -- she'd been told (after years of fertility treatments and a surgery that messed up her reproductive system) that she couldn't get pregnant.
She got pregnant by accident at about age 40 anyway. My parents were happy and really wanted the baby, but they told us, right off the bat that if it tested positive for Downs Syndrome that they would abort it.
Not because they couldn't have loved the child, but because they wouldn't leave that burden on us since, inevitably, we would be left to be the caretakers when our parents died.
Fortunately my brother was not disabled and so he was born happy and healthy. But I know that I would make the same choice as my mother.
If she had aborted me because she didn't want to burden my sister, I would never hold that against her.

Re: Would you/have you gotten an abortion?
(Anonymous) 2015-09-15 11:51 pm (UTC)(link)For the extra points...honestly, yes. I'm responsible enough to handle a normally-developing child, but the extra care that would go into having a special needs child would break me, and I know it. Unfortunately, that does also account for a normally-developing child that has an accident that renders them severely disabled, and that's one of the main reasons I'm never going to have children. It's paranoid of me, but even with that slim chance, and knowing how I'd react, I can't in any good conscience doom a child to that.

Never had an abortion (never had reproductive sex to have an accidental pregnancy though).
Have had a miscarriage.
I would get an abortion if I needed to, absolutely. Including for severe disability. I had a (for now) healthy baby, tested foetus early for severe genetic defects, would have had an abortion if test had been positive. I had a 1 in 100 chance of this.
For me, it's the person carrying the embryo/foetus who gets to determine the meaning of what it/them is to them. No one else. I would never tell anyone else what they should do or not do.
Once the foetus is in the latter part of the pregnancy, and could live well independently of the womb-bearer, then I think abortion is morally problematic.
Where I live, abortion is legal on demand, up to 24 weeks if warranted.
I delayed having children for a decade because of disability, and only chose to breed when I felt I had just enough energy and resources to care for a child, including just enough extra if they became sick/disabled. This is why I was determined not to bear a child I was already sure would need my care for the rest of their life, not because they wouldn't be "perfect". I knew I could try again, as embryos/foetuses are potential lives, not lives to me, even the one I miscarried. Other people have different personal meanings, and that's okay.

My only other thoughts on this come from studying science history and ethics... somewhere north of 95% of women abort if they find out that the fetus has severe, congenital diseases. Reading about the sheer human cost when 20-100x more children who required intensive, 24/7 care (and almost invariably died in childhood) for the entirety of their natural lives, and were often in crippling pain the whole time - and a greater proportion of women had children at an advanced age, not fewer as per popular myth because there was no birth control - is enough to make even the most religious soul staunchly pro-choice, I think. The drain on families and the drain on society - in particular fledgling attempts at socialized medicine - was staggering.
And if one wonders how we dealt with this before modern medicine and whatnot, well, the answer is pretty simple: we didn't. Infants born in these conditions were either killed or left to die (a practice that continues in hunter-gather tribes to this day). What you're seeing is a convenient modern expedience for a tradition as old as humankind itself, only we've absolved the rest of the "tribe" (i.e. society) of their complicity in this choice.

Re: A question
I also suspect that pregnancy may be detrimental to my health, and with my track record, the only way I would end up pregnant is via rape.
I would probably try to get an abortion without even inquiring about the potential ability of the embryo.
