I hear you. Most of the people I want to cosplay are superheroes, and my body, while not obese, is not what you'd call spandex-ready. I don't want to be one of those "Well, you tried" cosplayers, you know?

(Anonymous) 2015-09-18 11:33 pm (UTC)(link)
I go to a large convention in Chicago each year that has such a great amount of cosplay, and in a variety of body types, too. I've seen plenty of cute and sexy plus sized cosplays there.

I know there's more than that holding you back, but I want you to know that lots of fans love seeing their favorite characters cosplayed people with all kinds of bodies.

I would like to point out that this was this year's cosplay winner at Gamescon:

And she won over at least one 'skinny pretty" woman wearing minimal clothing.

(I will try to find video footage, she was awesome.)

Wow, that is a fantastic cosplay!

Female Barbarian from Diablo

There's live footage of her in one of the Blizzard vids from Gamescon in Germany, can't find it at the moment but she was really incredible.

That is one beautiful, badass cosplay. What an impressive costume! (That armor is hot. I want some.)

You have options

[personal profile] iceyred 2015-09-18 11:45 pm (UTC)(link)
You can learn to sew. It's not hard. Then you can make the costumes you want.

You can lose weight and buy the costumes to you want.

You can wear whatever you want and if anyone says anything to you about it you can tell them to fuck off.

(Anonymous) 2015-09-19 01:07 am (UTC)(link)
This. There's nothing stopping you but yourself, and I say this as someone who did all three of the things listed (learned to sew, lost weight, and stopped caring so much about what strangers think) and now happily cosplays whatever I want.

I want to say, "Don't worry what anyone else thinks and just enjoy yourself! People who choose to be dicks aren't worth your time or energy," but the thing is I know that's easier said than done and doesn't really help. I hope you can one day cosplay without feeling self-conscious.

TBH, I don't think I would ever cosplay for similar reasons even if the details weren't a problem. (I don't like having my picture floating around the net anyway, and I would always be scared of one of them getting 'popular' for the wrong reasons. So...I feel you.)

As far as your weight goes I don't think it should be a big deal, but again, I know that doesn't change things. :(

(Anonymous) 2015-09-19 12:03 am (UTC)(link)
I understand your anxiety, but maybe it'll help to remember that you're not going to be the only non-skinny cosplayer there - not by a very very long shot. I can't promise 100% there won't be dicks out there in the world, but they will be everywhere, and I can guarantee that nice people who will just think it's awesome that you're cosplaying will outnumber them a thousand times over. You got nothing to be ashamed of, girl, and you clearly want to do it, so do it! :) As a cosplayer myself, I love it, I love the craft and the modeling, and most of all I love connecting with other cosplayers and fans at conventions. You'll have a blast, honestly. Do you have friends you can go with? Or cosplay friends who could help you brainstorm ways to get a costume together, maybe even help teach you to sew? I know there are places where you can buy them online, or even people who will offer commission so you can send your measurements and they'll make it for you, but I haven't tried that myself.

(Anonymous) 2015-09-19 12:04 am (UTC)(link)
Just wear them around the house? Unless what you are looking for is the attention and not the thrill of wearing clothes you love.

There's a growing "cosplay is for everyone" movement within the cosplay community, which believes that anyone can do it regardless of age, gender, sexuality, skin color, skill level, size, etc. As a cosplayer who isn't stick-thin herself (and also rather outside of the typical age range of most cosplayers), I'm on board with this movement. Even though most of my cosplays are of male characters and I don't have experience in the more revealing/skintight outfits, I still say that if there's something you want to do and you feel comfortable enough in your own skin to do it, go for it!

Oh yeah, and there's no saying you have to sew everything or be an expert at it. I can't sew to save my life, so I usually do "thrift store" cosplays, make other things that don't involve more than basic sewing, or I have things commissioned. There's a lot of room for creativity, and anyone who tells you otherwise is, in my opinion, wrong.

I love Cosplay and would love to get into it, but I am held back by the fact that I am bad at arts and crafts and I am poor. So I stick to wearing fandom-related shirts. Besides, not a lot of cons near where I live anyway.

Thrift store cosplay is great. I didn't have a ton of money when I was 15, but I did make it to the thrift store and bought some clothes for a Lina Inverse costume. Pair it with an old pair of my mom's boots and a k-mart halloween cape and wig, and I ran around the convention and had a blast.

OP, fuck anyone who says you shouldn't do/wear whatever you want. Sing the 'fuck you, fuck you very, very muuuuuuch' song at them.

1. As a cosplayer I firmly believe cosplay should be done because you like it, if it makes you happy, do it and fuck the haters.
2. Of course body insecurity is a killer and idk how to help with that (though keep in mind even skinny people have to wear a lot of shapewear under spandex, just cause spandex hugs everyone in unflattering ways), but as for your face, so many of the pretty girl cosplayers you see photos of online are wearing a lot of make up. It doesn't mean they aren't pretty to start with, but for photos/con floors/etc some contouring can add the kind of umph that puts cosplay over the top. Its like theatrical make up! Anyone can learn to do it, and it also helps me feel way more confident in a cosplay.

(Anonymous) 2015-09-19 12:50 am (UTC)(link)
as someone who has been cosplaying for 17 years...

This whole idea of only pretty people cosplaying (and only doing sexy cosplays) is a horrible invention of the internet. And really it's only been prevalent enough for non-cosplayers to be afraid of it as a "thing" for the past 3-4 years. The haters are overwhelmingly:

1) on the internet, never in person,
2) NOT cosplayers themselves, and
3) victims of the same complex.

Nasty haters filling FB and tumblr with disparaging comments about people being fat and gross tend to be under the same delusion that only pretty people are allowed to cosplay, and thus they have all the wrong expectations in the first place. They also don't know how much work goes into costumes and assume most people just buy their Chinese knockoffs and pose with their tits out and boom, you're a cosplayer. That is not the case.

If you're concerned about looking good, well, we all are! All of us regardless of size, shape, gender, age, and skin color want to look good in our costumes. It's just a matter of putting the work into it. Even if you purchase or have your costume commissioned to fit you, you can wear corsets and other shaping garments to sculpt yourself into a truly sexy look - and with well-made costumes and well-made undergarments, you'll look drop-dead amazing. No need for masks and shape-hiding bedsheets, you can go full burlesque and be gorgeous if you want. They make all kinds of neat items to help out people of all sizes.

I go to a fairly big con every fall and I see plenty of people cosplaying who are big and/or not conventionally attractive. You should do what you want! Thin "cute" people are definitely not the only ones who cosplay. As long as your costume is good, no one should have an issue, and if anyone gives you grief, throw it right back at 'em.

Tbh most cosplayers are landwhales so you'll be fine.
