Best Straight To DVD or Bombed movies

(Anonymous) 2015-09-19 12:40 am (UTC)(link)
What are some of the best (or favorite) movies that were straight to DVD OR bombed at the box office?

TITAN A.E. didn't exactly bomb at the box office, but it didn't do all that well. Damn shame, because it was waaaaaayyyyy better than Treasure Planet.

*just repurchased a copy of that a couple days ago, coincidentally enough*

Seconding, especially the part about it being way better than Treasure Planet.

I always forget that movie exists, but when someone reminds me of it, I remember that I liked it.

I watched it again just recently. It still holds up even though it looks like total shit on an HDTV.

I remember it more for introducing me to Creed more than anything else.

Idiocracy is amazing. I love that Comedy Central picked it up and plays it all the time.

Oh my word, Idiocracy. I watched that whole movie in homeroom in high school over the course of a few days. It was awesome.

Iron Giant is beautiful! It made me so emotionally invested in a way films rarely do.

I respect you less for liking Idiocracy, tbh.

Bronson! I know it was released overseas but I don't think it was here.

This is half of why I do a stream! (The other half is because I am a horrible person. Just ask my new hater!) it's hard to pick just one, and technically the room won't count so I'll say Jupiter ascending

Labyrinth. I'm not sure it bombed but it definitely didn't do well. I love it though.

I couldn't watch too far into Labyrinth because it got too gory for me but all the people who I've known who've watched it say it's consuming, in a good way.

IMHO, Pooh's Grand Adventure is the best direct-to-video Disney sequel that doesn't have angsty teenage lions.

Anything Rutger Hauer or Christopher Lambert did in the 90's during the golden age of straight-to-video.

Split Second with Rutger is fucking amazing, as is a film Lambert did called Mean Guns. They're not high art, but Mean Guns in particular is just a great cornball action movie that almost nobody's ever heard of. It's basically 'The Most Dangerous Game', but with a bunch of rival mobsters locked up inside a prison while the guy that set it up watches (played by Ice-T).

Sometimes it crops up on Netflix, but the last time I saw it, it was a terrible transfer.

I don't think "Josie and the Pussycats" did well at the box office (definitely didn't do well critically) but that was my shit when I was younger and I will defend that movie to my deathbed.

(My straight-to-DVD faves are the "Lost Boys" sequels in a so-bad-they're-good way. The third one especially is hilarious.)

I will always say that John Carter was a genuinely good movie. There are some movies I like (Pompeii for example) even though I know they aren't good. John Carter was good, though, just with bad advertisement and a too big budget and people assuming it was derivative when it wasn't.

I heard that Disney basically decided not to market John Carter (of Mars) because they were acquiring Marvel and suddenly didn't care about developing any "boy" properties in-house.

I...think that means the Disney/Marvel marriage is a bad thing for genre film! Now I hope Fox never gives the X-Men rights back.

Meet the Robinsons.

It was not well liked when it came out and the numbers show that. Also, reviews. However, I just adore it to little pieces.

I adore The Hudsucker Proxy and now watch it every New Year's, but wow, did that film bomb. With a budget of $40M in 1994, it only made $2.8M back.

But I bought the DVD, so that probably helped out! A bit.
