(Anonymous) 2015-09-19 08:37 pm (UTC)(link)For me, the first thing that comes to mind is Riley from Inside Out. I find that story so deeply female (especially specific to that age) that I cannot imagine it going that way for a male character her age.

(Anonymous) 2015-09-19 08:40 pm (UTC)(link)Utena or Sailor Moon being men is possible, but it would kinda ruin the point of both series.

(Anonymous) 2015-09-19 09:38 pm (UTC)(link)1) Bilbo from The Hobbit. I know it's done a lot in fic, but that's usually exactly to change the dynamic. It might just be me, but if you change Bilbo (and keep all the dwarves male), it's less about differences in culture and more about differences between the sexes. Bilbo's the homebody, the one who enjoys cooking, the peacemaker, etc. All very stereotypically female things.
2) A lot of Star Wars characters. Though I suppose you could swap them all. I say this mainly because so much of SW is about fathers and sons.

And even then sometimes it could work if you switched the genders of everyone in the story.
Re: Inspired by #10
(Anonymous) 2015-09-19 10:12 pm (UTC)(link)While gender is probably the least important factor in their stories (or from what I remember, it's been years), having Terra and Celes (who are arguably the main characters in the game, no matter what hogwash Squenix tries to sell people, though Terra is the more cited/used one in outside media) be men would take something away from it.
Final Fantasy 7 one where I'm so used to the characters the way they are, I'm not sure I'd be 100% okay with a genderswap solely out of nostalgia. But to be fair, you could theoretically change the sexes of everyone in the story to the opposite and it wouldn't affect much in the game anyhow (except for the whole angle with Vincent, Lucretia, and Hojo, but no one gives a shit about Dirge of Cerberus lol).

(Anonymous) 2015-09-20 07:35 am (UTC)(link)But no one beyond that. I don't really buy claims that men and women "just think differently" and such, at least it is totally possible for men and women to think the same.
Re: Inspired by #10
(Anonymous) 2015-09-20 11:09 am (UTC)(link)I actually think you could gender swap the OT characters (Luke, especially, was envisioned as a woman at one point. But Anakin, Padmé, and Shmi have to stay how they are.
Shmi due to the way Anakin was born -- it wouldn't work with a dude so Anakin couldn't have a father but no mother.
Padmé had to be woman to give birth to Luke and Leia.
And she couldn't be gender swapped with Anakin because a big part of Anakin's story is fearing that she'll die in childbirth and then being ignorant of the survival of his children. Which I don't think would be feasible if he was the pregnant partner.
