Secrets like this just remind me that I still haven't seen the latest movie and that I dread doing so. I like Tony, too. I just- ugh. Everything.

I watched AoU on the plane recently. I went in with low expectations, and I was still unimpressed. The plot was not so well thought out, imo, and there were too many characters, and like you say, so much Tony everywhere.

Yeah, Age of Ultron made me hit my Tony Stark limit. I figure...RDJ has to retire eventually right? HE HAS ALL THE MONEY! And soon he is going to be too old and might break a hip.

(Anonymous) 2015-09-20 11:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Your comment amuses me. It's 100% true, but the way you worded it is just hilarious to me.

(Anonymous) 2015-09-20 08:17 pm (UTC)(link)
There was way too much of him in both movies. After the first one, I was expecting he'd feature less in the second one, but nope.

(Anonymous) 2015-09-20 08:26 pm (UTC)(link)
I actually agree with this. He's a big crowd pleaser, but without John Favreau his dialogue is mostly cringeworthy. I'm looking forward to him being replaced by the other characters.

This is an increasingly common sentiment in the fandom I think.

I don't even hate Iron Man/Stark as much as some people and I'm kind of bored of him dominating now. I feel sorry for Cap as well. His next film isn't really a solo film is it? Makes me wonder why they didn't just make Avengers 2 Civil War and forget Ultron.

(Anonymous) 2015-09-21 12:13 am (UTC)(link)
I feel the same way about Cap. I think we can move on from Cap and Tony and start featuring some new central characters in Marvel movies already. I wish they weren't doing Civil War at all.

(Anonymous) 2015-09-20 08:40 pm (UTC)(link)
MCU as a franchise would've been amazing if they'd stopped Iron Man after one movie, then given Tony Stark/Iron Man the Avengers films and mentions in other films, to remind us of how big a presence he is in that setting. This never ending cycle of Stark creates his conflict, Stark solves it, Stark vows all is well, lather rinse repeat really fucked up anything meaningful about his character and story.

"This never ending cycle of Stark creates his conflict, Stark solves it, Stark vows all is well, lather rinse repeat really fucked up anything meaningful about his character and story."

Holy crap. You just put into words what I find so FRUSTRATING about this character. I never realized why it bothered me so much but it's THIS. The movies keep asking us to have sympathy for Tony when his problems are ALL of his own making. And while I don't mind character flaws, I do think that a work has to acknowledge those flaws in a serious way instead of just having the character magically fix things only to make the same mistake again later.

(Anonymous) 2015-09-20 09:10 pm (UTC)(link)
That is a really good way to put it. One case of that cycle would work, but when a character is constantly screwing up (and ignoring other peoples' advice in the process) and then having to fix his own screw ups, it's harder to sympathize with them as a person. I absolutely LOATHE dealing with people like that in real life and I don't want to see it in movies.

ugh, so true :(((
This is exactly what I find frustrating about his character... It worked for me at the beginning, I really enjoyed Iron Man 1, and I liked 3 because it really went into his issues, but... can other characters have some issues too, please? The plots are really starting to recycle horribly. Here's hoping that Civil War won't be a disaster.

Yes, this! Tony Stark makes the same mistakes over and over again, and never seems to learn from them. I find that very frustrating.

(Anonymous) 2015-09-20 09:02 pm (UTC)(link)
I think Tony Stark is a tricky character in the sense that he's supposed to be a lovable jerk, but it's easy to get that ratio wrong. Too much jerk, not enough endearing qualities/dialogue? He's just too much of an asshole then, and not as enjoyable to watch because you wouldn't want someone like that in your life even if they were a billionaire genius with cool toys.

I feel you, I like Tony well-enough but I'm getting tired of him being used as the selling-point of the movies, he's not the reason I watch them and will never be.

+100

(Anonymous) 2015-09-20 09:21 pm (UTC)(link)
God, yes. Of course, I didn't even like the first Iron Man movie, so I pretty much never want to see him ever again, but it's increasingly frustrating that he's such a big presence, even in the ensemble movies. Especially when half of the others don't even have one film of their own, let alone three. He's become like Wolverine in the X-Men movies, ever-present and tiresome.

(Anonymous) 2015-09-20 09:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Great analogy. Wolverine centered movies are so OVER DONE, like Iron Man centered flicks.

I adore Tony, but I'm getting sick of every Marvel movie turning into the Tony Show.

(Anonymous) 2015-09-21 12:05 am (UTC)(link)
AoU made me realize I was pretty sick of Iron Man.

Ant-Man made me realize I'm really coming close to being sick of the MCU as a whole.

(Anonymous) 2015-09-21 01:26 am (UTC)(link)
I'm gonna go against the flow here: I still love RDJ's Tony and want more of him. Still like him better than all other characters in the Marvel movies, so no surprise there.

I can easily see how it would become tiresome both for people who never really liked his take and for people who have other favorites, since he does get a lot of the spotlight.

Also, funny the same thing happened to me with the X-Men movies. Everyone rants about how tired they are about Jackman/Wolverine - yep, still my fave too.

Agreed. Tony is basically worst Avenger at this point imo, can't stand him anymore.

(Anonymous) 2015-09-21 09:36 pm (UTC)(link)
the only version of Tony I'm liking right now is in the webcomic Roommates :D

(Anonymous) 2015-09-22 11:00 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh waaaah, Tony's going to be everywhere in Civil War, it's so not faaaaiiirrrr!!!!!!!

Gimme a break. Tony was a major character in the Civil War comic storyline, of course he's going to have a major role in the movie. Duh.

And he's been a pretty significant presence throughout Marvel comic continuity, so of course he's going to have just as significant a presence throughout the MCU film franchise. Again, duh.

Don't like it? Get used to disappointment. Iron Man and RDJ make Marvel/Disney a shitload of money, and as long as they're all happy, he's not going anywhere.
