Re: Is it prudish to not want to read/watch something because it has explicit sex?

(Anonymous) 2015-09-24 11:52 pm (UTC)(link)
No it isn't, because why is anyone obligated to read/watch something in the first place? If I know a show/whatever has a lot of something I don't enjoy, why should I have to watch it? This is something we do for entertainment, no one is paying us to endure things we don't like.

Re: Is it prudish to not want to read/watch something because it has explicit sex?

No one is saying you're obligated to read anything, where are you getting that?

You find something that's a genre you like about the characters you like about the ship that you like with the dynamic you like and the tropes and plotlines that you like and the writing is great and you love the author but oops, there's one sex scene, you have to not read at all instead of skipping the scene and enjoying the rest?

If the existence of the sex scene is the *only* reason, barring triggers and things, it's a little weird

Re: Is it prudish to not want to read/watch something because it has explicit sex?

No, you're putting some kind of obligation on the reader to finish a story that has content they don't enjoy. A reader doesn't need any "good" reason at all to stop reading, because it doesn't matter. I've stopped reading stories for much milder reasons than a scene making me uncomfortable. You're acting like it's a big deal when it really isn't. Obviously if a fan has some kind of phobia of sex, that's something that maybe they ought to work on, but just a distaste? So what, who cares? It does not matter.

You're assuming I am when I'm not

I agree it doesn't matter, too. You assume I think it does

OP asked if it is prudish and it is. Nothing wrong with being prudish, are you assuming prudish is bad? That's on you

Re: Is it prudish to not want to read/watch something because it has explicit sex?

(Anonymous) 2015-09-25 12:07 am (UTC)(link)
No, you flat out said it was weird if someone chose to stop reading something because of sex.

And "prudish" is a character judgment. It hardly applies to everyone in this scenario. Some people just get bored or uninterested when it comes to sex scenes. For some people, it can be triggering. Maybe someone just doesn't like how sex scenes are written. It doesn't mean they are offended by the very thought of sex.

I explained below what I meant

"offended by the very thought of sex"

Wha?

http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/prudish

So no, but I'm not up to having a semantic debate with you

They're not obligated to read it, but they're weird if they don't read it?

Explained below

Re: Is it prudish to not want to read/watch something because it has explicit sex?

(Anonymous) 2015-09-25 12:02 am (UTC)(link)
SA

^ Weird as in yes, avoiding something completely due to the existence of a sex scene as the *only* reason, is prudish

Nothing wrong with being prudish, read and watch what you like, but prudish it certainly is

Re: Is it prudish to not want to read/watch something because it has explicit sex?

(Anonymous) 2015-09-25 12:15 am (UTC)(link)
Like the original anon you were replying to said, "prudish" is a negative descriptor to many people because it doesn't just imply strait-laced or proper, but (by the definition on the website you yourself linked elsewhere in the thread) excessively so, and usually is associated with snobby people who judge others for being irreverent or immodest. It's definitely a word that gets used as an insult.

Re: Is it prudish to not want to read/watch something because it has explicit sex?

(Anonymous) 2015-09-25 12:25 am (UTC)(link)
I agree it's excessive like I said I think it's overkill

I would also think that squeeing hard and literally screaming in joy over a show that you OMG LOOOOVE is overkill

Am I going to go tell the squeeing person that? No

Luckily, other people's opinions on what's excessive or not mean nothing unless they try to stop you from doing it or impose their opinion on you out of the blue, and it's not like I'm giving this opinion unasked for since what other people think of this, is OP's entire question

Re: Is it prudish to not want to read/watch something because it has explicit sex?

(Anonymous) 2015-09-25 12:29 am (UTC)(link)
^ Thinking an action is overkill also =/= judging what kind of person the one performing the act of going overkill is

e.g. I think smoking is bad, I don't judge smokers

Re: Is it prudish to not want to read/watch something because it has explicit sex?

(Anonymous) 2015-09-25 12:02 am (UTC)(link)
Okay, but what if you don't read fics rated NC-17/Explicit to begin with?
