24) Lol this reminds me of that thing i did making fun of therians once.

25) You aren't alone.

28) Most dysfunctional relationship ever, y/y?

51) If you're starting to want the relationships styled by Jane Austin? yeah, that's probably a huge problem. Way too much ... idealization, and not even in a good way. So much "marry a rich man", it makes me want to vomit.

(Anonymous) 2008-02-09 11:23 pm (UTC)(link)
51) Oh god I agree so hard. SO HARD.

I mean honestly, shallow-ass books that women have orgasms over because apparantly the best thing in life to do is to marry rich so you can sit on your fat ass for the rest of your life and use him till he dies, then take any inheritance and live rich, you know... without working a day in your life. Whores.

Besides that, Jane Austin was, well... a hack. She couldn't write. Why do women go gaga over that shit? I swear, if I ever need to back up my homosexuality, it'll be because "women like Jane Austin".

Nice sweeping generalization there.

The books are actually a rather biting social commentary. I'm a bit baffled that they're categorised as "romance" nowadays.

Also, back when they were written, marrying, and marrying as well as possible, was pretty much the only thing women could do (which is actually what many of the books she wrote actually deals with).

And it's Austen, not Austin.

I'm glad you posted this comment. Saves me posting a very similar one XD ♥

Re: 51

[identity profile] tealizard.livejournal.com 2008-02-10 01:11 am (UTC)(link)
Ugh I always fuckup the spelling.

See, I would actually get the 'biting social commentary' if anything seemed sarcastic about them. Maybe it's just the poor writing, but I can barely stomach them, and wouldn't have read to the end was it not a good part of my grade.

Re: 51

(Anonymous) 2008-02-10 01:24 am (UTC)(link)
So in other words BAWWWWWW I DIDN'T GET IT BAAAAAWWWWWW.

Take a comparative lit class, learn some history, get an idea of what she was really trying to do, it might change your POV. Humor/parody/crit styles change depending on the period and the target audience. You might never find them amusing, but you weren't the intended reader.

Re: 51

[identity profile] tealizard.livejournal.com 2008-02-10 01:27 am (UTC)(link)
... because by doing that (hurr like I HAVEN'T?) you automatically become one of the writhing mass that think Jane Austen is a genious?

Yeah, taking my personal preferences in authors personal, that's right. You know what, someone says they don't like Lovecraft, I just think oh well, I guess they're missing out but you know, that's cool. I don't get butthurt and demand that they take some courses just so that they like him, when in reality, classes do nothing but talk about stuff that has no bearing on me actually EVER liking any particular author.

But that's ok. Anger issues, much?

Re: 51

(Anonymous) 2008-02-10 01:40 am (UTC)(link)
No, actually I dislike her writing style as well. I agree I would never read them for entertainment. But it's rather silly to say "her books said nothing but lol get married" when to the target audience they had an additional layer of complexity.

Re: 51

[identity profile] tealizard.livejournal.com 2008-02-10 01:43 am (UTC)(link)
I think that the books are shallow to begin with. Why spend so much time writing about shit you don't agree with, instead of just... you know, writing about women in the working world? I dunno. Makes no sense.

Re: 51

[identity profile] lanjelin.livejournal.com 2008-02-10 08:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, maybe it's the style of the time? Or the specific type of irony? I really had no trouble seeing it (and it gave me quite a few good laughs), but irony is a lot more difficult to detect than sarcasm, especially if you're unfamiliar with the society it takes place in.

Re: 51

[identity profile] tealizard.livejournal.com 2008-02-10 08:27 pm (UTC)(link)
I noted the irony... I just wouldn't describe it as "biting social commentary", wasn't nearly as bitter as... you know.

Re: 51

[identity profile] lady-ganesh.livejournal.com 2008-02-10 02:27 pm (UTC)(link)
And I admit it's been a while, but didn't the heroines generally end up with rich men who, you know, loved and respected them. HOW CRAZY.

OP 24

(Anonymous) 2008-02-10 01:37 am (UTC)(link)
Huh?

Re: OP 24

[identity profile] tealizard.livejournal.com 2008-02-10 01:41 am (UTC)(link)
You may or may not have seen it? It was more pointing fun at the "this is my glowing seventeen animal hybrid spirit animal that changes every week" therians though.

Re: OP 24

(Anonymous) 2008-02-10 02:10 am (UTC)(link)
Ah, I don't think I've seen that. I'm new to this community.

And my totem animal was set since I was three, I don't particularly want him to be radioactive either ;-)

Re: OP 24

[identity profile] tealizard.livejournal.com 2008-02-10 02:11 am (UTC)(link)
XD It caused quite the lulz and personal offense on Deviantart, back in the day.

51

[identity profile] slylilgoblin.livejournal.com 2008-02-10 03:31 am (UTC)(link)
51. Not so much 'marry rich' as 'find a guy who treats you like a human being and isn't a bore or an asshole'. Though yeah, that probably is a little idealized.

Re: 51

[identity profile] tealizard.livejournal.com 2008-02-10 03:33 am (UTC)(link)
generally the tone of her books are "marry rich"... if they were the way you put it, i'd bea ll for that shit

Re: 51

[identity profile] slylilgoblin.livejournal.com 2008-02-10 03:40 am (UTC)(link)
Maybe you're getting that because that was a big concern during the era. Money's usually brought up because that was what determined who you did marry.

Lizzy Bennet turned down Mr.Darcy the first time he asked. He was rich, but he was still an asshole. He wasn't any richer when he stopped being a jerk and she realized it.

Re: 51

[identity profile] tealizard.livejournal.com 2008-02-10 03:43 am (UTC)(link)
Yet some people still seem to think the ideals presented in the book is awesome.

Re: 51

[identity profile] slylilgoblin.livejournal.com 2008-02-10 03:54 am (UTC)(link)
I wasn't agreeing with you. I was saying that her heroine's usually didn't care about money above everything else. Because Austen makes the case that money and security makes for a hollow happiness when you aren't with someone you can love and respect.

that's kinda awesome, right?

Re: 51

[identity profile] tealizard.livejournal.com 2008-02-10 03:56 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, that's cool and all...

But I mean, in modern society, everyone I have met that likes the book likes it because of the ideals presented... and of course, my english teacher in 11th grade aws all AUSTIN WRITES AWESOME ROMANCE, DID U KNOW. IT'S TOTALLY AN AWESOME BOOK BECAUSE OF ALL THE TRU LUV AND RICH MENS... and tried to failed me when I presented the opposite. it was hilarious.

51. LOL you reeeeally missed the point, huh? I'm not saying you have to like the books (though personally I find the humor and satire extremely witty and well-crafted), but that's like the opposite of what Austen meant. I don't know how you could have honestly read all of one of her books and taken that message away from it.

Re: 51.

[identity profile] tealizard.livejournal.com 2008-02-12 06:11 am (UTC)(link)
No, I did'nt, but if her opinions on love and romance have changed, that's probably the way that they have.
