I really like that art.
raspberryrain: (Default)

[personal profile] raspberryrain 2015-09-30 10:57 pm (UTC)(link)
It's really good!

(Anonymous) 2015-09-30 10:44 pm (UTC)(link)
I won't lie, the illusion of meaningful progress is one of the main reasons I play games.

(Anonymous) 2015-09-30 10:46 pm (UTC)(link)
I will admit, video games will make you feel like you are accomplishing something when you are really accomplishing nothing. But that's why they are both a great stress relief (I have trouble turning my brain off and video games generally can distract me enough to stop working) and are horribly, horribly addicting.

(Anonymous) 2015-09-30 10:47 pm (UTC)(link)
I agree, it's true but not necessarily a bad thing. It's entertainment after all, it's not bad to feel good. Not that OP implied it was so, just agreeing with you

Agreed. I'm very successful in games I play (MMOs). I'm always one of the richest people on the server. I'm a mega-crafter. I know my feeling of accomplishment in the game means I don't have to drive as hard in real life for the same feeling... but it's so much easier and safer to do it in game.

(Anonymous) 2015-09-30 10:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Wow. Did you figure that out all by yourself? People play video games because they like being rewarded and because it gives them a concrete purpose? THIS IS GROUNDBREAKING INFORMATION! I hope video game companies don't figure this out! They might start designing games in a way so that small transactions can be used to buy virtual goods that can then be used to complete levels. And that would be terrible.

I need an adult.

(Anonymous) 2015-09-30 10:53 pm (UTC)(link)
I'd say most creative things are like that. TV shows, movies, and books all have resolutions. They're trying to say something. They're neat and clean when life is stupid and messy.

Yes, I know that some books aren't as cut and dry, but they still have better resolution than anything IRL.

[personal profile] cbrachyrhynchos 2015-09-30 10:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Possibly, but we have examples of games from the oldest known cities, and quite possibly from before even then. Gaming appears to be a human universal.

I agree, anon.

(Anonymous) 2015-09-30 10:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Of course. Like all entertainment, it's merely a distraction from the terrifying existential question at the center of all human existence

I agree with this 100%, and I'm sure there's at least one PhD thesis on it somewhere.

Yeah, for someone who has little control in their own life, or generally leads an uninteresting one, it's gotta feel good when you save the world in a game, or connect with people/characters in a way you can't with people irl.

I think you're right OP, though IMO more people who play games are aware of this than it seems.

You can say the same about a lot of things.

Fitness, for example. The world seems to be full of people utterly incapable of any kind of self improvement but hey they lost 20 pounds and are totally on keto now. This is the most interesting thing about them.

Please ignore that I'm a shitty person who constantly makes bad decisions and frequently hurts others I got BUFF!

To steal from a better joke account, "RPGs wyth too manye questes do freake me out. Why wolde Ich wisshe to be yn a fantasye worlde wyth a to-do list the size of the Iliad?"

I love video games, but the current next-gen immersion tactic can be just as bad as whatever I wanted to escape from in the first place. But it's the same with any other hobby or productive activity. If life gets me down, I go clean. When cleaning looks daunting, I come here and post instead.

If someone does need a guiding post for today, Netflix is taking the Big Leboswki down tomorrow. I've never seen it, so that's my short-term goal for today!

Kotaku likes to run autobiographical articles lauding this. "When I was young, I was poor and disadvantaged/closeted trans/discriminated against for my race/had abusive parents, and video games gave me a way to escape and fantasize about a better life. Thank you, video games, for keeping me sane."

i mostly like shooting portals because it's fun to watch your character fall in an infinite loop

can't do that in real life

Well that's just stating the obvious, innit?

I like the art. Makes me feel like the person in that picture is the one thinking the secret.

Maybe, sure. That's not even a bad thing.

Personally, I like to be able to be a part of a story. It's fun.

Yeah, that's probably part of it for me I wont lie. That and the special powers/abilities, that's always fun.
