Yeah, tumblr really falls down on the job when it comes to reminding fat people that they're fat and unhealthy. They'd probably forget if it weren't for selfless crusaders like you!

Re: Problematic Opinion Thread

(Anonymous) 2015-10-04 10:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Everyone needs to feel shitty all the time, okay? And our society wouldn't be able to get to such fantastic levels of general alienation and depression if it wasn't for the tireless efforts of volunteers like AYRT.

Re: Problematic Opinion Thread

(Anonymous) 2015-10-04 10:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Hallelujah for the original anon! I'm short and weigh 180 lbs, I get regular exercise and eat a moderate diet high in vegetables and lean proteins with a limited carb intake and even more limited sugar intake. My bloodwork is good and my doctor tells me I'm doing a great job and keep up the good work.

But sometimes I forget to be more humble about my horrible fat, the way a fat person ought to be. Fortunately for uppity fatties like me, there are people like the original anon to let me know that I'm not allowed to pretend I'm healthy because I've got wobbly saddlebags and a paunch. Shame on me for trying to get away with such a dirty, filthy trick that obviously hurts other people in the fee-fees.

I think that's great. I really truly do. Good on you for being healthy regardless of size.

The problem with HAES though is that it should be about people like you and it isn't. You never see it discuss diet - nutritional diet, not weightloss diet - or exercising or bloodwork or any of those things.

Re: Problematic Opinion Thread

(Anonymous) 2015-10-04 10:35 pm (UTC)(link)
You want fat people to post their lab results online for your perusal?

Re: Problematic Opinion Thread

(Anonymous) 2015-10-04 10:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Uh, no? Nowhere did I imply that and you're being deliberately obtuse.

If anything HAES should tell people to go to their doctor then do what their doctor recommends after doing their labs, but whenever medical things come up it's "the system is prejudiced and tells me I'm unhealthy" which goes directly against the whole point of health at any size.

Re: Problematic Opinion Thread

ayrt - Serious reply now.

I get what you're getting at, I do. But you know, I don't want the "help" of people who feel it's necessary to make sure fat people only feel good about their size if they're the right kind of fat people. Maybe the movement you're referring to is wrongheaded in their approach. Maybe they do need to focus more on the actual health aspect rather than the general "all fat is okay you guys" message.

But... you know...? Meh. Wrong as they may be, it still feels like the impetus behind the criticism still feels a lot like making sure the fatties don't get too uppity. I don't really care for that. There are fat, unhealthy people in this world who are in denial about their weight and overall health. There are skinny, unhealthy people in this world who are in denial about their overall health, too. But the internet is mostly concerned with only policing the fat people and that feels shitty to me.

They'll figure it out on their own time. Or not.

AYRT

Anti-HAES is just as shitty as HAES sometimes, I agree with you on that. There's no need to shame fat people. There's no focus on underweight people even if they count as a "size". It's broken in general.

My issue that while "fatties lol" is awful and offensive, convincing people that they're fine ignoring their doctors is beyond awful and dangerous and gets practically into anti-science like anti-vaxxers. There's a large part of HAES that says the system is biased and to disregard medical professionals' advice even if they warn you you're in danger. I don't know why everyone is on board the train to stop anti-vaxxers from spreading their message, but not on board the train to stop this other anti-science thing. It's not about right kinds of fat people or wrong kinds of fat people, it's about listening to doctors and generally proven science.

For me, anyway. I'm sure there are many anti-HAES people who just hate fat people though, and that's the wrong approach imo.

OP

Yes, all of this. I don't give a shit if someone wants to be fat; their body, their choice, yadda yadda yadda. But don't fucking spread misinformation that can negatively impact OTHER PEOPLE'S health.

Re: Problematic Opinion Thread

(Anonymous) 2015-10-04 11:22 pm (UTC)(link)
And as I said above, I agree that what you describe is bad. What I don't think is helpful, however, is the focus on the idea that if you are morbidly obese, you are delusional to think that this could be healthy. You truly want to change peoples' minds? It's the same for anti-vaxx. You don't change peoples' minds and encourage them to approach the issue scientifically with capslock rage. For example: YOU CANNOT BE AN ANTI-VAXXER AND LOVE YOUR CHILDREN.

Because that's divisive. It doesn't encourage people to think logically and do some real research, it just shows them your contempt and puts people on the defensive, rightly or wrongly. I also think it'd be helpful if people who wanted to combat the bad messages HAES spreads could focus exclusively on the misinformation and maybe not make a point of only targeting the morbidly obese.

Re: Problematic Opinion Thread

(Anonymous) 2015-10-04 10:28 pm (UTC)(link)
AYRT was obviously talking about morbidly obese people though, not you. Projecting much?

Re: Problematic Opinion Thread

(Anonymous) 2015-10-04 10:45 pm (UTC)(link)
How do you know I'm not morbidly obese? Maybe I'm a precocious 12 year old who's 3'8".

(Anonymous) 2015-10-04 10:47 pm (UTC)(link)
If you're a 12 year old what the hell are you doing on F!S? This website is not appropriate for someone your age, and shame on your parents for not supervising your internet usage.

HAES is not just about morbidly obese people though, so I'm guessing not really?

Exactly. When people criticize HAES, they prefer to cherrypick the extreme examples.

I mean you get 'my bloodwork is good!' doesn't last for ever right?

I know smokers who can run marathons. Personally I'm pretty fit medically speaking, despite eating a terrible diet and having a high stress lifestyle. But that shit catches up to you and I rarely see anyone but HAES using this argument.

You're super healthy until suddenly your joints aren't working quite so great, or your blood levels magically aren't fine.

Re: Problematic Opinion Thread

(Anonymous) 2015-10-05 03:08 am (UTC)(link)
Until recently, I had check ups and bloodwork done four times a year over the past ten years because I have a hormone deficiency and at the same time, also got checked for things like cholesterol, A1C, triglycerides, etc. Now I'm down to once a year, because I've done well and more significantly, done well over an extended period of time.

You didn't know that, of course, but it didn't stop you from asking a terribly condescending question and treating me as if I'm so dumb I think one check up means I'm good for life. It's almost as if you thought that being overweight means I'm automatically low on brain cells. I'm sure that isn't the case, but your reaction is a bit odd. Anyway, thanks for your concern, but I have a doctor who monitors my health and I don't really need the input of random people off the internet.

AYRT

Thanks for skewering what I said into something completely different, I really appreciate that.

I do not go out of my way to harass fat people, nor do I participate in any inane "crusade" against body postivity.

What I object to is these so-called "activists" spreading misinformation about medical issues and the way the human body works. These are the same people who believe that once you're fat you will be fat forever and nothing you do can ever change that.

Wow, you don't? That's amazing. Hold on a sec, I'm sure I have your medal for being Awesome on the Internet somewhere around here...

Oh, never mind, you're a troll. Carry on. :)

N.A.

Oh fuck off. You can't accuse someone of being one way then belittle them when they say they're not. Well, you can but it makes you an asshole, regardless of if you left the comment they replied to or not.

Shhh, we're dealing with a HAES advocate. Logic has no place here.
