Eh, what with them both being screwed up spies, whose idea of foreplay is drunken wrestling...

(Anonymous) 2015-10-09 10:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Didn't she try to pressure him to drink and when he didn't, that is when she started slapping him?

Seriously what is with all the MRA secrets recently?

(Anonymous) 2015-10-09 11:01 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes. Because not liking women abusing men is something only an MRA would say. I guess it is true feminists only care about themselves.

I get you are probably a troll, but if someone tried to actually say that only MRAs cared about female on male violence, that would only make me want to support whichever group of MRAs are working on that problem. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

So, you're against men having rights? Do you misunderstand what the criticism of Men's Rights Advocates is about?

(Anonymous) 2015-10-10 05:42 am (UTC)(link)
well, this is hard to counterpoint an issue on...

(Anonymous) 2015-10-09 11:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Normally, I would be one to say "get over it, it's just fiction"...but. I grew up watching shows/movies where it was quite common for a woman to slap a man. I legit grew up thinking that was acceptable behavior (not that I slapped anyone myself), and didn't even give it a second thought until I was in my 20s. So I think there is legitimate cause for re-thinking that particular trope.

(Anonymous) 2015-10-10 07:56 am (UTC)(link)
Well, I didn't and nor did anyone I know - self defence when offered persistent groping or physical violence excepted. So maybe it's you.

I don't like the ship, either-- like, to be fair to her, I guess, it's not just that she was drunk (which is no excuse), but also that she'd just been through a huge ordeal over the period of time since she was first recruited to the night in question, stuff she likely had minimal training at best to compartmentalize and deal with, and he'd first been the guy chasing her down/ripping the car apart/shooting in her general direction, and shortly thereafter the guy talking about her like a piece of property, so...

Like, I don't think it means she's a horrible human being, or that they couldn't be friends, but I did feel uncomfortable with the slapping, did not like that whole bit, and would not enjoy seeing them in an actual romantic relationship... It may have been more annoying than actually painful (at least up until the tackling, where he was clearly not comfortable actually fighting back because... well, she's tiny, he could accidentally do real damage to her, yadda yadda yadda), but it did leave a little bit of a bad taste in my mouth, yeah.

(Anonymous) 2015-10-09 11:48 pm (UTC)(link)
yeah i'm pretty sick of the slap slap kiss trope. it's not cute.

I think fandom, and society in general, both have a huge double standard when it comes to women being violent or abusive towards men. It's usually treated as funny, deserved or just this unimportant thing that happened, to be quickly forgotten.

Oh man. One of the most annoying recent instances of female on male violence (for comedy) is Jane slapping Thor in Thor 2. I don't care if she can't hurt him, YOU DON'T FUCKING DO THAT.

Slight tangent

My mother was the abusive parent when I was growing up. It would confuse me to no end that my reality was never portrayed in media. Even today, when a woman goes batshit crazy in a movie, it's Lifetime movie, and it's presented as an isolated, crazy random event. I don't know why we have the impression that women can't be abusive, since they can be equal in all other things.

I can see why you wouldn't ship them. If the media is going to roll with that sort of thing, I'd rather it be discussed at some point.

(Anonymous) 2015-10-10 01:40 am (UTC)(link)
Haven't seen the movie yet, but I agree. Hitting people shouldn't be funny no matter what gender it is. :/

I haven't seen the movie but I don't like it when movies do that either. It wont necessarily stop me from being able to ship something but it will bother me, especially if it's played for laughs.

(Anonymous) 2015-10-10 02:06 am (UTC)(link)
Her whole behaviour in that scene sunk the ship for me. The slapping was the last straw, but even before that - her annoying him for the lulz, trying to get him to drink, cranking up the music when he wants to be left in peace, being as obnoxious as she possibly can be because how dare he not pay attention to her ... and then when he finally goes along with it and dances along a bit, she slaps him. Hilarious.

Like me, you can always ship Napolean/Illya instead. :p

(Anonymous) 2015-10-10 09:57 am (UTC)(link)
For me it's mostly about whether the man in the story feels any fear of the woman. If he doesn't seem to feel any fear, then a light bit of female-on-male violence doesn't tend to bother me. Though I do tend to think that once two characters are in a committed relationship the woman should not hit the man, even if her hitting him doesn't cause him to feel any fear.

This doesn't really apply to real life, though. I mean, the presence or absence of fear is still a big part of what determines how I'll feel about female-on-male violence, but I err much more strongly on the side of "all violence is bad" when it comes to real life relationships.
