tendenitis?

[personal profile] philstar22 2015-10-09 10:55 pm (UTC)(link)
So I've got what is probably either a heal spur or planter's fascitis. It has been causing a slight limp for months. I saw my primary care to get a podiatrist referral early this week. I'm still waiting for them to call back.

So last night I suddenly got shooting pain on the outside of my foot and could barely put weight on it. I'm pretty sure it is either tendinitis or a torn tendon since this is the exact same pain I had last time.

Called the doctor to let them know, and they put ASAP on my file for the referral people.

I'm just wondering what is the best thing to do in the meantime until I can get the podiatrist appointment. I've already started wearing shoes in the house to give it some support. But I can still barely stand and have a lot of pain.

See if there's sny place you csn rent crutches and stay off it. You might look into cushy insoles but this as kinds beyond that. Also wrap the foot/ankle.

As someone with chronic foot pain, my best advice is stay the fuck off your foot as much as possible, and keep it elevated. Basic Tylenol-types aren't going to help the pain -- Ibuprofen is better if you can stomach it. Get crutches, and swear a lot -- the crutches will help you get around, and the swearing may help manage the pain slightly. (It does for me anyway.)

Seriously though, stay off it. You may want to consider taking a day or two off from school or work or whatever.

Considering I'm unemployed, the staying off it shouldn't be too hard. The swearing more difficult given I'm living with my parents. :)

My mother has a walker she offered. I feel really stupid using a walker, but if it helps.

I'm going to catch hell for this, so I'm planning to post and ignore replies, but find yourself a good chiropractor, one that works on extremities in addition to spinal adjustments. Something may be jacked up further up your leg, like in your pelvis or hip, and that misalignment can cause serious foot pain.

Meanwhile, ice and anti-inflammatories FTW.

Stay off your feet. Check for swelling if you're able to.

Don't apply heat or ice until you know what's going on.

My ballet teacher had tendonitis and always recommended alternating heat and ice for her students with the same problem. But you should probably wait until you know that's what's going on before trying that.

Unlikely to be plantar fasciitis - that's the bottom tendon of the foot. Although if it is, I'm really sorry, because I've had it since May.

Foot issues are so hard to deal with because no one wants to stop walking around long enough for them to properly heal. I've been not running or jumping and wearing supportive shoes for months, but I still got a twinge not 20 minutes ago.

Good luck! Ice and rest are your best bet, but if it's that painful, it's good that you're getting to a doctor.

How do you stop yourself going crazy when you know you have a serious chronic illness but diagnosis is taking forever?

That's a relatively hard proposition. Some people find that throwing themselves into school or work is an adequate distraction, others find that escapism is better for them.

Try to keep your normal routines and surround yourself with support, if possible. Just having someone to talk to (not even necessarily about your issues) usually does a lot for your mental state.

You get on with life as best you can and take good care of yourself.

Don't doctor shop (keep trying new ones until you get told what you want to hear), but if the one you're seeing isn't actually listening to you or even writing notes, do look for someone in your area who has positive reviews or has treated other people with chronic issues, and explain to them that this is making your life harder than it has to be.

Try not to live your life around the idea of getting a diagnosis though. That's not a good thing to be emotionally invested in. Some people never get answers. That's the reality of medicine. It's not perfect. Even if you have a name for it, you can still only really manage the symptoms as they come.

You don't want doctors to rush you around to specialists and testing facilities like you're on fire. That means your condition is rapidly declining. I actually heard my doctor use that phrase on the phone when she was talking to a specialist the other day. Like, cool, I'll just sit here and try not to decline too much. Don't mind me.

Skin issues in hot weather?

[personal profile] feotakahari 2015-10-09 11:37 pm (UTC)(link)
I've normally been able to control my issues by regularly cleaning off any sweat in affected regions. This drought is getting to me, though--I can't clean fast or often enough. Any suggestions? (I'm not supposed to use antiperspirants or anything that can clog pores.)

Try talcum powder. It absorbs moisture so should keep you dry.

The usual tips for keeping yourself cool apply. Probably the best approach, if sweating exacerbates your condition, is to avoid perspiring rather than having to deal with it after.

You might want to invest in a personal cooling device. There are some handy ones that sit around your neck and cost much less than having air conditioning installed.

Shower a lot, pat it dry a lot (oh okay you've tried this), change clothes a lot, talc, prickly heat powder (maybe). At least, I used to have a lot of skin issues when I lived in a hot humid climate, and that's what I did.

I can't offer any advice beyond what's been given already, just want to say I feel your pain. I've got some really bad spots right now. Good luck.

Loose clothing that breathes well. Some materials will just absorb the sweat and keep it there. I don't recommend tight cotton shirts. If you can leave your sweaty areas uncovered, that would be best. Maybe not practical for out in public, but when you're at home.

Have some chill out time. Literally and figuratively. Stay in the shade and relax with cool drinks. Try to lower your stress levels. Stressing about sweating will make you sweatier. It's evil like that. :(

I hope the weather is less sweat-inducing for you soon!

Why do I keep finding random bruises on me when I don't remember bumping anything? I've never had a blood clotting issue or anything.

Re: Medical Questions

(Anonymous) 2015-10-10 02:04 am (UTC)(link)
Possibly pressure? I had those on my shins for a while, and it turned out to be the shelving under the counter. I wasn't bumping into it, but the constant pressure when I leaned up against it eventually caused bruising. It it's around joints, possibly your clothes are too tight? Same reason as above.

You could be bumping up against things and forgetting. That happens.

I find bruises all the time. But I'm a klutz with bad spacial sense and depth perception. I tend to walk into walls or desks or things accidentally so much I don't even notice it a lot of the time.

Mine are related to Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome, apparently. I've been like this forever though. I wake up with new ones most days.

If yours is a new thing you might want to mention it to your doctor.
