Re: The Martian (SPOILERS)

[personal profile] kaijinscendre 2015-10-11 08:59 pm (UTC)(link)
I really, really, really liked the movie. I loved that the humor was carried over from the book. And I loved that they were able to add more emotional parts (him becoming angry after the HAB explosion, when he is about to be rescued). The way Mars looked and was filmed was fantastic. All of the actors were perfect for their roles (awesome to see Sean Bean in a role that is different from usual).

I was glad how closely they kept to the book. I was a bit sad they cut the scene with the comms being destroyed and the dust storm he has to figure out how to get around but I understand why they did* (the movie was already super long).

Now, what I didn't like. As I said, I loved the movie EXCEPT about the last 20 minutes or so. It actually made me a bit sad I read the book beforehand. There were three things I really did not like (and were all departures from the book).

1) I HATED the fact that Commander Lewis decided to go out in the EVO instead of Beck. This was a terrible departure from the book. In the book, everyone has their roles that they are specifically trained for. In this case, Beck is the EVO specialist.

I loved that in the book, even though this was a highly emotional/stressful situation, they all stuck to their roles because that is what was needed to save Mark. So when Lewis decided to go out in the EVO, she was making a stupid emotional choice to "redeem" herself for leaving him. A choice that could have gotten Mark or her killed (and left her crew without a commander).

2) The rescue in space was way more dramatic than in the book. I just...didn't like it (especially the Iron Man glove part and OMG GRAB THE ROPE AND DON'T LET GO part).

3) The post rescue on Earth stuff. I just really wish it had ended with him arriving on board, like two seconds of celebration, and then Lewis telling everyone to get back to their stations.

*Removing those scenes also made the Space Pirate joke make no sense

Yes to all of this except the last. I actually liked seeing a bit of where the characters ended up in the future and particularly that Mark was now teaching.

But I agree the one thing that really bugged me was Lewis going out instead of Beck. That was not a good change to make and it made her out to be reacting emotionally rather than logically which didn't fit her character.

I really did appreciate the added emotion, though. Mark's emotions came across perfectly and believably. And I loved the scenery on Mars. So gorgeous.

I really need to see this again.

I would have thought that I would like it (I wanted a post scene like that in Gravity) but eh. The only thing I really liked seeing was the Beck/Johansson baby. I thought their romance was so cute.

I got to admit, I have a lot of trepidation about this movie. The puppybase has been shilling it pretty bad because of the whole only-hard-SF matters stance, not to mention the hardcore libertarians have been ranting about how that is how real men[tm] need to step up and live.

I'm not sure it is going to be good enough to put up with all that gloating and bitching. Goddamn those Zombie Heinlein-ites.

I have no idea what half of that means.

After you watch it are you going to talk to those people about it? If not, how will they gloat at you?

Re: The Martian (SPOILERS)

"puppies" refers to Rabid Puppies. tl;dr it's basically a "movement" if you can call it that, of angry white guys (the sort of dudes you'd find on 4chan or reddit) who happen to be sci-fi/fantasy fans, and want it to be like the GOOD OL' DAYS. because apparently diversity isn't fair to them and they feel underrepresented. lol. long story short, they tried to hijack the awards by giving their votes to writers they felt represented them (including a batshit insane racist guy). in response, a lot of high-profile SF/F authors boycotted the awards.

they hate the idea that SF/F should be for anyone but them.

libertarians are... well, libertarians. :/

basically picture a conglomerate of every shitty misogynistic SF/F fan stereotype and the worst parts of reddit's userbase thinking this movie is about REAL MEN and REAL SCI-FI!

So...like 100 dudes circlejerking about hard sci-fi? Just...avoid them and go enjoy the movie.

Yeah, but no-homo though.

Re: The Martian (SPOILERS)

(Anonymous) 2015-10-11 09:39 pm (UTC)(link)
And Zombie Heinlein refers to the movement, closely associated with those guys, where only science fiction written in the style of Robert Heinlein's very early Sci-Fi works counts as "real" science fiction. It should only explore technical innovation and never have any wider social context. It should be noted that Heinlein's later works fail drastically the Heinlein Test.

AYRT
wow, i hadn't heard of that one...

so, do they think innovations just appear magically out of thin air or something?

You can. Like...other than that one anon above, I have not heard ANY of that kind of shit about that movie or book. Not on Tumblr, Reddit, podcasts, or various other forums I go on.

I can only assume anon is going to the "Hardcore Sci-Fi For Men Only" subreddit.

The best way to make a puppy cry is to enjoy stuff anyway, and possibly by Leckie's latest since it just went out last week.

Urgh I hate dissatisfying endings and what the hell with #1?!? Why would you change that?!? Usually I don't mind source deviations but that makes no sense and weakens the characters/ending?! So...shallow!

I know! As soon as we realized what was happening, my sister and I gave each other, "What the fuck?" looks.

Giving you what the fuck looks through the phone. No. Nope. Not watching now, can't deal with endings that make me mad because then my thoughts and memories will forever be of the ending. Nope. Am out, gone. Was gonna wait for DVD but now I am no. *flounces*

Re: The Martian (SPOILERS)

It isn't going to ruin the whole movie, but eh. It is disappointing. And I think I will warm up to the post-rescue scenes (but forever bitter about Lewis going out).

Re: The Martian (SPOILERS)

(Anonymous) 2015-10-12 03:04 am (UTC)(link)
+1 to everything but #3. It wouldn't have felt like an ending to me, since one of the explicit objections to sending the crew back to Mars to fetch Mark was that there was a chance their ship would fail on the way back. If it had ended after Mark was on-board, I would've left the movie going "BUT DID THEY MAKE IT HOME OR NOT????" I didn't like the epilogue, really, but I think it was better than leaving them with a potential death in space.

Re: The Martian (SPOILERS)

[personal profile] kaijinscendre 2015-10-12 03:15 am (UTC)(link)
See, I just assumed they made it back safe because if not it would have been in the book. I actually would not have minded some immediate aftermath scenes. Like, Beck examining him. Mark eating something other than potatoes. Him just being amazed at seeing people again for the first time in years.

I guess that is what fanfic is for. :(

Re: The Martian (SPOILERS)

(Anonymous) 2015-10-12 03:35 am (UTC)(link)
Never read the book, so as someone who's just seen the movie? It would've been way too open-ended to leave it in space. Normally that's not a problem, but most space movies don't spend so much time talking about the explicit chance of death in space either.

Re: The Martian (SPOILERS)

(Anonymous) 2015-10-12 03:12 am (UTC)(link)
I loved it to! Your problems I avoided by waiting to read the book until AFTER watching the movie...I figured, the book usually has things the movie leaves out so this way I'll be pleased by new stuff instead of disappointed by a lack of stuff. :D
