My brother-in-law. I know, that's a predictable answer, but I just happen to have the most stereotypically shitty one you can imagine. Kind of an idiot, can't hold a job, constantly complaining about feminists, "PC culture" and minorities, and once threatened to crack my cat's head on the concrete when his young kid kept pulling its tailing and it finally responded by hissing and lightly smacking his hand away. I can ignore everything else, but that was the one time I exploded on him. He hasn't threatened my cat since (I don't think he's actually violent, he just says outrageously offensive things), but fuck, I never forgave him for that. I'm still civil around him because I love my niece and nephew, and my sister, but fuck I wish she'd divorce his ass already.

... does your sister know he said that? If my hypothetical husband threatened my sister's cat, he'd be in trouble. :( I'm sorry she makes you put up with that.

Yeah, she was there. Afterwards I took her aside and ranted to her about it, but she tried to defend him by saying he would never actually do that, you know how he is, he just says what's on his mind without thinking about it and he's really defensive of the kids. I told her I don't care, he doesn't threaten my cats, and he especially doesn't do it in my house. I think she was embarrassed for him but we never talked about it again. She's not as stupid as he is, and she spends a lot of time being passively embarrassed for him, but also won't put him in his place, or, you know, leave him. Ugh.

AYRT - Ah, like that. :/ I'm sorry. Hopefully she'll see sense someday.

I'd go off about that cat thing, too. Ugh. That's awful. And his kid needs to learn to back off with that stuff, too. When an animal reacts like that to being pestered, that's a sign to leave 'em alone.

I also feel for you with your brother-in-law's beliefs. I have a cousin (a cousin that I used to play with a LOT when I was little) who rants all the time on Facebook about how he can't stand Obama and all that sort of thing.

The kicker? He also can't hold a job, and he often gets unemployment and other government benefits when he's not working. So the very government he can't stand is the same one he's benefiting from when unemployed. Yeeeeeah.

(And yet I'd be willing to bet he'd sit there and nod at any Republican who bitches about people on welfare.)

Yeah, as far as I'm concerned, my cat was being very patient and then helped teach the kid a valuable lesson. He was enduring a lot of poking, prodding and pulling from the kid, and finally stood up for himself in the only way a cat can. He didn't even scratch the kid, just hissed and smacked him with his paw.

And yeah, no kidding, sounds just like my brother-in-law. But don't get me wrong, he hates Republicans, too. He hates everything. He's too dumb to even know what he himself believes. I think he mostly just likes being loud and ranting about stuff, instead of actually genuinely giving a shit. besides, of course, when it comes to someone calling out the offensive things he said because you know fucking feminism is destroying this country. *eyeroll*

I remember my brother-in-law had a friend like that, who wouldn't leave their cat alone. My sister finally managed to get the guy to back off, though, and I don't know that my brother-in-law even hangs out with him anymore.

But yeah, animals have the right to react if someone doesn't back off. If someone kept pestering that kid and poking and prodding him even after he said "back off", he wouldn't like it, so he shouldn't do it to animals. My cat is often very nuzzly and playful with me and my family, but if she wants to be left alone, she will let us know, and we respect that.

Ahhhhhhh, well, at least he's consistent :p? But ugh, the feminism thing. Sounds like he's going through some sort of "I'm so cool and edgy and jaded" thing or something.

Is he young? If he's young, maybe there can be hope for him to grow up and change. If he's older, though, then...I feel for you even more.

Before the cat thing I was thinking "sounds just like my brother's girlfriend". But my biggest problem with her on that front is how long it took them to get their cat spayed because she just had to have a cat before they could really afford it, and they couldn't just go to an animal shelter where it would have already been spayed or neutered because she had to have a special breed.
