F!S Anon Meme (the ??th!)

Secrets, rants, opinions, anything you want to say about your fandom or a fandom or fandom in general, do it here! Anonymously, of course. Get it all off your chest.

Some ground rules:
1. Going anon is encouraged but not absolutely required.
2. No autoplaying/autolooping embeds, or embeds that cover/stretch the screen.
3. No dropping personal info or IRL contact info, etc.

That's about it, though!

I'll be linking some general/general-fandom threads I see so people don't repost new threads with the same stuff. If you want me to link your thread up here, drop a link in the first comment!

Hobbit movie fandom

I actually enjoyed the movies for what they were (not anywhere near as good as LOTR which I think got things mostly right, but still fun). But while I did come out of the movies shipping Bilbo/Thorin, everything else about this fandom bugs me. I hate being the elitist fan, but when I go looking for fics all I ever find are fics that have no understanding of the world or the actual characters.

I didn't really notice this until after BoFA. After AUJ, I shipped Thorin/Bilbo too and hung out on the kink meme. There were always those random AU prompts that could be ATG but enough meaty prompts not to be annoying. There were a few authors in the beginning with a good knowledge of Tolkien and I was following some decent people on tumblr who were just enthusiastic about their love without being down on others. It wasn't bad.

And then BoFA and I started shipping Bard/Thranduil. I've never seen such drek. I can't find any good fic. I follow several prolific Barduil authors and it's ALL AUs. Every new idea. Don't get me started on how they view Thranduil (and yes, one of the authors hasn't even read the Hobbit. I can understand LOTR, but the Hobbit?). They don't use movie or book canon. It's a complete fanon Thranduil where he's a sassy bitch. Urg! It's so frustrating.

I just don't see any love for Tolkien and his world. Or even the real characters, movie or book. It's so disappointing. I'm to the point where I think it will be nice when the EE comes out and there's nothing else for the Hobbit fandom to latch onto.

Yeah, I think I know what you mean. I know I got distracted and wandered off into Dragon Age, but it doesn't help that even before I did, I felt like the fandom was already drifting into a stage of writing terrible stuff that misses the whole feel of Middle-Earth.

I failed to return to Elf-shipping when I returned to the fandom, and even back in the LotR hey-day I was not really a huge fan of Legolas, so the whole apparent obsession with the Mirkwood Elves is lost on me.

And AU! You know stuff like Modern!AU and coffeeshop!AU, etc fails to interest me because... why is it even Tolkien-verse if it's not in Middle Earth? Frankly in Second World fantasy fandoms a huge part of what makes the story interesting is the world and it's cultures and politics.
This is an argument that can be applied to other fandoms likes Dragon Age and maybe even Game of Thrones, though I'm not really into GoT.

I love fic that has a feeling like any moment it could pull out a long deep discussion about the Finwion family feud and it's lingering effects in Third Age Middle-Earth.
