F!S Anon Meme (the ??th!)

Secrets, rants, opinions, anything you want to say about your fandom or a fandom or fandom in general, do it here! Anonymously, of course. Get it all off your chest.

Some ground rules:
1. Going anon is encouraged but not absolutely required.
2. No autoplaying/autolooping embeds, or embeds that cover/stretch the screen.
3. No dropping personal info or IRL contact info, etc.

That's about it, though!

I'll be linking some general/general-fandom threads I see so people don't repost new threads with the same stuff. If you want me to link your thread up here, drop a link in the first comment!

Get it out here. Give the reason if you want to.

Hannibal

(Anonymous) 2015-10-18 06:53 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't understand why the fandom AND actors think Hannibal/Will is so fucking romantic??? And I don't mean in the "creepy/disturbing" way. They seem to genuinely think that Will and Hannibal love each other and will travel off into the sunset. Not that Hannibal mentally tortured and destroyed Will for the lulz.

Like, WTF. If you are shipping it in a "this is fucked up" way, fine. But all of you people who think this is true love are deluded and gross idiots.

Are you me? o_o I've literally just submitted a secret that says roughly this.

Re: Hannibal

(Anonymous) 2015-10-18 07:10 pm (UTC)(link)
it just bothers me that the actors and creators ENCOURAGE it.

Re: Hannibal

(Anonymous) 2015-10-18 07:18 pm (UTC)(link)
I think Hannibal and Will love each other (in their own twisted way that isn't in the least bit healthy, conventional or sensible) and probably will ride off into the sunset (to kill people together), but I don't see how that isn't fucked up? That's the whole point of it. Most the fandom understands that I think, even the ones who don't mention it so much.

And there's a vid out there of Mads saying "Not that kind of love" when the audience aww's at him saying for Hannibal it was love at first sight. (Obviously romantic love, but not cutesy love.)

The fandom just has a bizarre sense of humor and runs with it.

(Not saying there aren't people who only care about fluff and don't take the creepy part of the ship seriously, but I think those people are relatively rare?)

Tbh - and I know this is a very unpopular opinion - I don't understand why people genuinely enjoy the romantic aspects of such dynamics at all. What part of "pure abuse and emotional toxicity" screams fun to them?

Re: Hannibal

(Anonymous) 2015-10-18 08:10 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't really know how to explain it. I feel like this is one of those things you get or you don't.

If you like the source material and find the characters well written and the dynamics fascinating, you might end up shipping them because of how much it works within the constructs of the canon. It isn't always about fun (though it might be, for some) so much as what you see in the text and find faithful (to the characters) or interesting.

Hannibal/Will has been there since S1 to some extent. I'll agree that it isn't a ship without plenty of (incredibly, lol) problematic elements to it so I understand why some people might stay away from it, but I can't help liking it. Maybe part of it is because of how drastically different it is from all my other pairings, so it feels fresh and unusual. (And again, fascinating in that "I know this is wrong" sort of way.)

Re: Hannibal

(Anonymous) 2015-10-18 08:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah I get enjoying the fucked-up dynamic, but most of what I've seen on the fandom are things like domestically-themed art or cute AUs and it really makes me wonder what part of the pairing it is exactly that they enjoy.

Re: Hannibal

(Anonymous) 2015-10-18 08:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Simple. It's the same reasoning behind just about every other juggernaut ship in a fandom out there: it's two (reasonably/marginally) hot-looking white guys together.

Because it is fun? I enjoy characters playing games with each other. I enjoy creepy romantic stuff that is so unhealthy because of everything surrounding it. I don't actually think it is in any way romantic, but I enjoy that stuff that is surface romantic (very surface) but deep down very much not okay. I'm not even sure why I like it, but I do.

Can't speak for all fans, though, there are plenty who actually romanticize it.

You're sick if you think that is romantic

I want to believe the actors are aware of how creepy that relation is, but are performing for the sake of the (loud) fans who think it's ~so romantic~

I ship it because I like creepy, fucked-up things. There is no way this ship could ever be consensual or not really unhealthy. That is why I like it. Honestly the people who romanticize it creep me out.

Once Upon A Time

(Anonymous) 2015-10-18 07:09 pm (UTC)(link)
I've stopped watching it after season 3. Why are people still following this show after 5 seasons is beyond me. The first season IMO, is the be all to end all of seasons. It was so perfect that I miss that quality in writing. Now, I can't watch it without seeing how horrible the writing went and Captain Swan.

Re: Once Upon A Time

(Anonymous) 2015-10-18 08:39 pm (UTC)(link)
To be fair, I thought season 3 was dreadful, but I've enjoyed it since. Season 3 I kind of watched out of obligation to one of my chief fandoms (Oz), but I cringed every step of the way. The Frozen arc, the Queen of Darkness arc, and so far the Dark Swan arc were all really interesting to me.

Not a huge fan of CaptainSwan, for me FrozenSwan is my OTP, though I doubt Emma will make another appearance in the show.

I liked the Frozen Arc and the Queen of Darkness arc. Season 2 was the weakest for me because they kept going back and forth on characterization. I enjoyed parts of season 3 in terms of character, but the actual plots (Neverland and Oz) not so much. I'm not enjoying Dark Swan so far, though. I don't think Morrison is pulling it off, so the acting is pulling me out of the show (plus that bleach blonde hair is horrible).

AYRT I think my biggest issue with season 2 is Regina's magic being treated as a drug/addiction thing that she needed to overcome, whereas in later seasons Magic has been considered something that has to be embraced, and possibly a metaphor for queerness.

Season 3, I did like some of the character stuff particularly Tinkerbelle, Pinocchio, and Ariel... but yeah the villain plots were just so painful.

Marvel Cinematic Universe
I remember ten years ago when I was the only one in my fandom circle to like Marvel Comics and how my friends who were only into anime and/or Harry Potter mocked me for that. Then those fucking movies came along and suddenly everyone of them was creaming themselves over that pile of shit!

All they care about is their gay shipping; I can't stand it.

Dan and Phil

(Anonymous) 2015-10-18 08:05 pm (UTC)(link)
I love the YTers themselves but the fandom is the worst. I know real-people fandoms have bad reputations in general because they're real people that fans can fantasise about meeting and whatnot, but the Phandom is so horrible it's unbelievable. I like jokes about how close they are too because their chemistry is definitely why I like them, but people who actually put things like 'I believe Dan and Phil are secretly dating' in their blog description are on another level.

I've seen vids and read blog entries from people who met them or were with other people who met them and I really admire Dan and Phil for still being so nice and thinking so much of their fanbase after meeting people who literally just scream in their face. I understand getting excited, but there's a line between that and being plain rude.

It's awful because I really think they're lovely boys who are so inspiring and have a lot of content that appeals to more than just teenage fangirls but I don't blame anyone for not wanting to get involved in the fandom because of the people in it.

I'm a newer fan and I was shocked at some of the phandom. (Shouldn't be, what with how long I've been in fandom.)

When I heard that people were shouting "have sex!", "kiss!" and "phan is real!" at their tour I got so much secondhand embarrassment. I want to follow them too, but so much of the fandom skeeves me out that I almost don't want to go into the tumblr tag.

(And for fucks sake, people need to stop sending them graphic fanart/fanfic.)

Hobbit movie fandom

[personal profile] philstar22 2015-10-18 09:15 pm (UTC)(link)
I actually enjoyed the movies for what they were (not anywhere near as good as LOTR which I think got things mostly right, but still fun). But while I did come out of the movies shipping Bilbo/Thorin, everything else about this fandom bugs me. I hate being the elitist fan, but when I go looking for fics all I ever find are fics that have no understanding of the world or the actual characters.

I didn't really notice this until after BoFA. After AUJ, I shipped Thorin/Bilbo too and hung out on the kink meme. There were always those random AU prompts that could be ATG but enough meaty prompts not to be annoying. There were a few authors in the beginning with a good knowledge of Tolkien and I was following some decent people on tumblr who were just enthusiastic about their love without being down on others. It wasn't bad.

And then BoFA and I started shipping Bard/Thranduil. I've never seen such drek. I can't find any good fic. I follow several prolific Barduil authors and it's ALL AUs. Every new idea. Don't get me started on how they view Thranduil (and yes, one of the authors hasn't even read the Hobbit. I can understand LOTR, but the Hobbit?). They don't use movie or book canon. It's a complete fanon Thranduil where he's a sassy bitch. Urg! It's so frustrating.

I just don't see any love for Tolkien and his world. Or even the real characters, movie or book. It's so disappointing. I'm to the point where I think it will be nice when the EE comes out and there's nothing else for the Hobbit fandom to latch onto.

Yeah, I think I know what you mean. I know I got distracted and wandered off into Dragon Age, but it doesn't help that even before I did, I felt like the fandom was already drifting into a stage of writing terrible stuff that misses the whole feel of Middle-Earth.

I failed to return to Elf-shipping when I returned to the fandom, and even back in the LotR hey-day I was not really a huge fan of Legolas, so the whole apparent obsession with the Mirkwood Elves is lost on me.

And AU! You know stuff like Modern!AU and coffeeshop!AU, etc fails to interest me because... why is it even Tolkien-verse if it's not in Middle Earth? Frankly in Second World fantasy fandoms a huge part of what makes the story interesting is the world and it's cultures and politics.
This is an argument that can be applied to other fandoms likes Dragon Age and maybe even Game of Thrones, though I'm not really into GoT.

I love fic that has a feeling like any moment it could pull out a long deep discussion about the Finwion family feud and it's lingering effects in Third Age Middle-Earth.
