this doesn't seem to be a terribly uncommon opinion. I don't really dislike anyone in undertale, but yeah, I have to say she's probably my least favorite. I know a lot of people can probably relate to her, but her entire personality seems....forced.

oh, and by forced, I mean a lot of things remind me of the more trendy "catchphrases"(??) you might find on tumblr, like the constant referring to yourself or interests as garbage, etc.

Alphys is adorable.
I mean I love Undertale, but she is far from being the worst thing about the game imo.

I liked her okay and I found some of her scenes pretty funny, but yeah, I'll agree that she's the weak link. Especially when a character as interesting as Sans is sitting there just out of reach.

And I really don't buy the Alphys/Undyne relationship, to be honest. It's a little bit of a letdown considering how many other relationships were built up well in such a short amount of time.

I kind of agree about Alphys/Undyne, but I can't really put my finger on why. It's not like I mind them getting together but I feel like neither of their characters particularly benefitted from being romantically hooked up...I guess? Undyne and Papyrus prob have the best friendship in the game, tho. I loved their phone calls.

To me, at least, I felt like getting together with Undyne was treated like some sort of prize that Alphys won/deserved. There wasn't a whole lot of buildup for their relationship and they didn't really mesh together all too well, tbh.

I dunno, I liked their friendship, but I wouldn't have bought a romance arc for them either. Undertale just doesn't feel like a romance-y game to me, so I think any romance arc would probably put me off.

I actually kind of identified with her, so I thought she was cool. She's not very confident, definitely has some sort of anxiety problem, spends a lot of time doing unproductive things, and a lot of the work she HAS done isn't something to brag about (besides her robot, I guess). However, she's really smart, works past some of her problems, and she learns that she can rely on her friends. I thought that was a nice way of handling her character.

She's probably the least popular of the main cast, but when you consider the other main characters are a super nice goat mom (and family), a pair of cool skeleton bros, a tough royal guard fish lady, and a flamboyant robot (not to mention all of the side characters, like Naps, Muffet, Monster Kid, etc.), it's to be expected she'd be the weakest link. She brought a lot of enjoyment to my playthrough, though, and I was glad to be friends with her.

(Btw, Sans is probably my top favorite, Alphys was just the character I related to the most. I'd have loved to have a little sidequest thing with him, but I guess the little lunch breaks were supposed to be that. Ah well.)

Yeah, how dare people with anxiety problems and depression have someone they identify with be prominent for once without the entire thing being about how they're cured!

I, for one, appreciated the fuck out of her. It was nice to finally see myself in a way that wasn't 100% a joke or someone to be cured. She was able to work past her problems, but not in a magical "here's a cure!" way and she still obviously has problems.

nice try, anon. but you know what? i'm depressed too. it's fucked up my life too. guess what? depressed people aren't some sort of a hivemind you can feel entitled to speak for - especially not in that nasty condescending tone.

hell, don't bring anxiety and depression into this - because this is not what my secret is about. i'm happy that you can identify with her. but i don't have to. i don't have to like a character because they might possibly share some mental shit with me. i can dislike alphys - who's, jsyk, more than just her mental stuff - without suddenly being against neuroatypical people getting their representation.

as much as i can relate to her, i agree. she comes off as very memeish and is a big part of why i wouldn't immediately give undertale a 10/10 on my own personal review scale.

there wasn't much depth to her as there could have been with napstablook or sans. i wish the romance for undyne and her would have been handled a little bit better. maybe not canon right away, but better hints than what was given, you know?

Alphys reminds me of a classmate I had at college. She was very smart, but had this severe lack of self-confidence that would have her repeatedly apologizing for the slightest imagined fault. When she was feeling comfortable she was great to hang out with . When she was not she would drive me up the wall. Alphys is that plus memes.

The hotland segment was the weakest for me, but not really because of her. As funny as the mini-boss segments were, I never felt connected to Mettaton. Mettaton Neo was as alienating to me as the Beast's transformation back to human in Beauty and the Beast. The pacing of the core was also slow.

Napstablook would have been cute. Sans is a different animal. As much as I would love more backstory for him and enjoyed every moment he was around, he sees your character as a threat. He is fond of you but if not for Toriel, he would have killed you in a heartbeat. Even in pacifist route. It would be against his narrative to be emotionally vulnerable with you.

Alphys is relatable in all the worst ways. She reminds me of myself when I was younger, and that's just uncomfortable to watch.
