It's for misogynists and men who can't measure up as men, but are too cowardly to be gay.

Being gay isn't a choice, fyi. Stop enforcing harmful stereotypes.

Calm down, you two. It's obvious AYRT was using "be gay" as shorthand for "come out as gay."

I see you haven't heard of lesbian separatists.

It's literally a bunch of Japanese dudes wanting to buck gender roles.

Nothing wrong with it.

Except that they're equating the problems in their life to women, who they shun and build their lives without, while embracing the actual harmful elements of their lives, i.e. the patriarchy. It's a cult of man nothing more or less.

Oh stop. What are you even talking about? Do you even know what we're discussing?

...no? It's more of a mindset that they don't have the energy to add a relationship (which in Japan demands that each partner fulfill a certain role perfectly and without stepping over the bounds of that role---stressful!) to their already horrifyingly overworked and overstressed lives. It isn't "a cult of man," it's a reaction to the insane demands that Japanese work culture puts on its participants.

Uh...

Confirmed for you not having any actual idea what you're talking about.

Most Grass-eaters do have girlfriends or are interested in having them. They affectionately say that what they seek is a "Meat Eater" girlfriend to care for the financial situation and ambition so they can care for the home.

It really is nothing but a gender role reversal, since Japan has historically been stuck somewhere in the 50's in that regard for a lot the recent past. The youth are simply getting sick of it.

Because the Japanese birth rate is so low that the country is in danger of going into a decline in a few generations if they don't start having more kids, not to mention the trouble that comes when you have too many old people in need of assistance and not enough young people to help them. Therefore, people who unilaterally declare that they aren't going to participate in anything that could lead to having more kids are a worrying thing to the Japanese government and society.

society kinda depends on men being men. a total rejection of the masculine leaves a void in society that is not easy to fill.

Japan does not handle social change well. Western culture went through the same collective freakout as this back in the 1990s with the new man movement. Only we did it a bit less so because back then we were all too high on peace and relief after the end of the Cold War, and were also experiencing the Clinton economic boom, to freak out as much as Japan is.

Re: Can someone explain to me the deal with the Grass-Eater movement?

(Anonymous) 2015-10-24 10:25 pm (UTC)(link)
It is young Japanese men doing the 1990s "new man" thing, where they were not as macho, hard-drinking, or as work orientated as their elders. And the older Japanese generation are freaking out about it, because Japan does not handle social change, or even mild rebellion by its younger people, well at all.

I thought it would be about literal eating of grass. Maybe some extreme form of vegetarianism, or something.
