66. Wait, you want to migrate to America to find... smarter fangirls?

You mean like... just the region of America or the US itself? :x

39. I agree, but I don't think the NFL is the cause of all of America's ills, I just think professional sports in general is kinda retarded. I'm sure the athletes LOVE playing sports as a job, and that's cool, but... why do people pay so much to WATCH a bunch of men throw balls at each other? If there was some accompanying storyline I'd probably understand, but ... just... what?! Go outside and play the damn sport yourself, wouldn't that be more fun?

I asked my dad why he cared who won what football game and he asked me why I liked to play video games so much and he promptly ignored me when I explained that not only do video games had things like plot and interactivity.

See, I even get why people play sports games because you actually interact with those, but just watching people you probably DON'T KNOW play sports is kinda... boring?

/rant on sports and why I'll never understand why people like watching them

[identity profile] leinyan.livejournal.com 2008-02-15 12:36 am (UTC)(link)
i would watch american football if the game didn't stop/start so much, it makes me lose interest really quickly :/

[identity profile] demyx.livejournal.com 2008-02-15 12:40 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah! I tried watching a game and like... they go, and hit each other, they get called back to the center, they go, hit each other some more, and every once in awhile someone actually throws the goddamn BALL.

I walk away for 15 minutes and it's OK if I missed anyone scoring cuz they'll play it in slow-mo until the next guy scores because THAT'S THE ONLY INTERESTING PART.

Don't even get me started on NASCAR.

[identity profile] leinyan.livejournal.com 2008-02-15 12:43 am (UTC)(link)
lmao when they're actually playing~~ where is the play? they run around, grunt plenty and throw a ball a bit. omg so manly. they should try playing rugby, see how macho they feel then.

LOL once, somebody said to me: "if nascar is a sport i should be called an athlete every time i drive a car" ):

i am actually a sports fan though ):

[identity profile] demyx.livejournal.com 2008-02-15 12:50 am (UTC)(link)
HAHAHA I KNOW. And that's the best quote I have ever heard about NASCAR dklsjdkas. ♥ I'll remember to quote it.

It's OK, I know several sports fans. I am someone who can barely watch things and like... I even have trouble watching TV and anime because I get start to fidget and even 30 minutes gets to be too long before I wanna just get up and DO something, so watching sports is kinda out of the question for me. HAHAH.

[identity profile] leinyan.livejournal.com 2008-02-15 12:59 am (UTC)(link)
it is what comes to mind every time i see/hear it mentioned. i only really follow the english premier league, although i always watch wimbledon and the olympics although there is generally nothing else on when they're on-going :/

lol i have like 4 films on my hard drive i am yet to watch fully because i get halfway through and then end up doing something else. like watch a film elsewhere in the house.

[identity profile] rosehiptea.livejournal.com 2008-02-15 12:58 am (UTC)(link)
My dad is crazy about sports too. I liked them better when he explained the rules more but in the end I never got the appeal of sitting there and watching them for hours.

Fortunately he realizes that he's living in a glass house and never makes fun of me for loving video games.

[identity profile] demyx.livejournal.com 2008-02-15 01:20 am (UTC)(link)
LMAO lucky. My dad... doesn't let me off the hook. But he's like, really old, so I forgive him because old people are like that. :[

[identity profile] rosehiptea.livejournal.com 2008-02-15 01:38 am (UTC)(link)
Actually, my dad is 76. But he's one of the most easy-going people on earth, so he doesn't tend to make fun of anyone's hobbies. I guess it helps that deep at heart he knows sports is all commercial and essentially silly just like other forms of entertainment.

[identity profile] demyx.livejournal.com 2008-02-15 01:41 am (UTC)(link)
Oh damn, he's like... older than my dad, I think! HAHAHA But you're lucky to have an easygoing parent, my dad complains at everything including any movies made after the 1970s and ... well, anything made after the 1970s.

uh, for reference, I think my dad is in his 70s, but he's like... 70-71ish. I think. Oh my god, I don't even know how old my own father is.

[identity profile] rosehiptea.livejournal.com 2008-02-15 02:07 am (UTC)(link)
To be honest I'm not 100% sure I got my dad's age right either. I think he was born in 1931... but I could be wrong.

[identity profile] carolinga.livejournal.com 2008-02-15 01:04 am (UTC)(link)
Well, there are storylines. For instance, the recent super bowl. Eli Manning has been pilloried by the NY press for years. He's always been compared to his brother and found wanting. People have called for him to be fired, said he doesn't have what it takes...etc.

Then you have the team the Giants played against--the Patriots. The 18-0 record-breaking team--who also got caught cheating this year. People thought they were unstoppable.

No one even gave the Giants a chance of getting to a super bowl, let alone winning against the Patriots.

Also, there was a rivalry angle--Eli Manning's brother Peyton and Peyton's team (the Colts) have struggled against the Patriots for years. So you had people saying the "wrong Manning" was going to the super bowl.

There was a whole David/Goliath thing going on. And that's just a little bit of it, if you follow the teams and the players.

So when you're watching the Pats vs. the Giants, you're not just watching them play football--you're watching these personal stories play out.

And there was a spectacular ending to the "story" (if you're a Giants fan--if you like the Patriots, not so much :)--Eli, who has never been given a chance, stayed rock steady and led his team to a victory over the Pats. There was a last-minute spectacular drive in which he made an amazing escape from multiple tackles and threw the ball--which his receiver caught against his helmet. Eli went on to get the MVP award--winning a victory for younger siblings everywhere and proving his worth as quarterback.

Anyway, if you just watch the game without knowing much about it, I can see why you might find it boring. But there are stories everywhere.

[identity profile] demyx.livejournal.com 2008-02-15 01:23 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I figure most people actually... do know to an extent the people playing in the game, so it's more interesting to them, so I guess it's just because I don't know much about the sport and the people behind it.

I DID wish I saw the end of this year's Superbowl though because the ending still sounded amazing and I was like "damn, they won in the last 30 seconds? I wish I could have seen that."

Like I actually can watch football movies and stuff and I thought a few of them were really good, and they were based off true stories. I guess I'd rather watch the people behind the game than the actual game itself. XD

[identity profile] kinneas.livejournal.com 2008-02-15 02:51 am (UTC)(link)
Ain't nothin' wrong with sports fans.

The players and contractors, however, I sometimes have problem with.

[identity profile] demyx.livejournal.com 2008-02-15 02:55 am (UTC)(link)
Nah, I got nothing against them. ♥ I don't get it, but I'm very sure they don't get my obsession with video games and fictional characters in general. 8D;

Though... what is it about the players and stuff you don't like? :O I'm just wondering, I think mostly everyone agrees they get paid way too much.

[identity profile] kinneas.livejournal.com 2008-02-15 02:58 am (UTC)(link)
I have no problem with them that I don't have with anyone else in the entertainment industry: overpaid, and occasionally way too arrogant.

And I think you'd be surprised. I used to work in a game store, and most sports fans that came in definitely appreciated the finer aspects of non-sports videogames.

People are a lot more versatile than other people give them credit for, I think. This is a big problem in anime and videogame fandom.

[identity profile] demyx.livejournal.com 2008-02-15 03:05 am (UTC)(link)
AHAHAHA YOUR ICON. ♥

Really? I've gotten weird looks trying to so much as seriously discuss and theorize video games with casual gamers... XD; granted, key word is casual. But yeah, I have met people who at first glance wouldn't look like gamers/anime fans and then they end up having a genuine interest in it, they just aren't in the fandom.

Actually, my mom's friend has read gay romance novels and my friend was so taken aback that her mom could actually relate to yaoi, so I get where you're coming from. I think I'm just unlucky with the people I hang out with (read: I need to get out more).

[identity profile] ariseishirou.livejournal.com 2008-02-15 05:43 am (UTC)(link)
It's not terribly entertaining to watch most sports unless you've done so for a while, I agree. But when you've followed the players and the teams for years - since childhood, for many people - it has the same sort of effect as a serial drama. New characters come and ago, bringing with them unique styles and flavours, and they hit the stage to perform for an audience in a grueling, unscripted contest of might, wit, and will. As another poster has mentioned, the story of the ultimate underdogs (with a QB ever under the shadow of his older brother) overcoming the evil empire (with a coach caught cheating, not once but twice, which had just beaten said older brother scant weeks earlier) couldn't have been written better in Hollywood.

Oh, yes, and of course there's plenty of sports slash as well.

[identity profile] queenshiva35.livejournal.com 2008-02-15 06:02 am (UTC)(link)
I live in constant fear of running across Patriots yaoi. But I suspect its inevitable. Wes Welker and Tom Brady are both very pretty.

Oh, also the Pats didn't beat Eli's older brother scant weeks earlier.

The Colts lost to the Chargers in the playoffs. They only played the Pats once in regular season, in week 9.

Sorry, I still think it was a great story (though it didn't turn out quite the way I wanted it too...) and on hindsight I'm glad to have seen it. I'm even a little, dare I say it, happy for Eli.

But let no one forget, it was Week 17 that energized the Giants after they had difficulty making the playoffs, and the confidence boost of nearly beating an undefeated team probably helped them grow into the "unstoppable" (Eli Manning is) powerhouse that rolled over the Cowboys and the Packers.

...i'm just trying to comfort myself. Don't mind me. *whistles in a corner, playing with a ball*
