Things you loved that disappointed you later on

[personal profile] kaijinscendre 2015-10-30 12:07 am (UTC)(link)
What are some books/movies/shows/games/etc that you remember loving but when rewatched/played/read just did not live up to your memory?

I decided to listen to the WTNV episode "A Story About You" because while I don't enjoy the most recent episodes, I remember that one giving me a creepy/awed vibe. But after listening to it again, it just sounded flat and boring. I guess I have gotten used to podcasts with better stories and production values but it was a bit sad. :(

Inception.

The first time I watched it I loved it and was obsessed. The second time I watched it, it didn't live up to the memory.

I still get excited about Inception but I think a HUGE portion of that has to do with the music. So epic.

The Swan Princess animated movie. I loved it so much as a kid and wow, it does not hold up well.

The story or the art of the movie does not hold up? Or both?

I agree. I used to love it, but the last time I rewatched it I was bored and hated all the characters.

Nowadays I mostly like the songs.

Pern

I mean I still love the interpretation of it I had as a kid but I definitely can't look at it twice without thinking of all the icky implications. And I also side-eye some of the worldbuilding and McCaffery's clear biases that I don't agree with.

Kinda sad about the situation actually.

Hrm. I thought I read some books by her when I was younger, but a quick search did not show any books she wrote about Griffons or talking horses. I've been wrong my whole life. D:

I struggle to read them now, even though I'm curious about her sons take in it, he seems to have some odd views according to reviews, too

When I was a kid we lived in Australia for a while and there was this cake mix you could buy that would form a layer of gooey pudding on the bottom of te pan as tge cake baked on top. I thought it was the best thing ever.

A number of years ago, I bought a box from a place that imports stuff from Australia and it was really pretty terrible. :(

If the mix disappoints you, maybe you would have better luck making the pudding from scratch?

Douglas Adam's writing in general, really. I was a very big fan of his writing all through my teenage years. Then I re-read one of his books when I was 20+ and I found it was not as good as I remembered. Too silly/random and not as insightful as I remembered it.

Weezer.

I'm trying to hold on to as much of 'Pinkerton' as I can but... now that I'm a little older Rivers Cuomo just comes off like a whiny self-obsessed jerkbag, not a romantic or empathetic or thoughtful figure at all.

Angel Delight.

It's a pudding-type desert sold in supermarkets where I live that I loved as a kid, tried it again as an adult. Bleeeeeeeh, it was so nasty, I have no idea why I used to like it.

(Though tbf if you mix it into other desserts it's not so bad, but by itself it's horrid).

Neverwhere.
I really liked it when I first read it, it's what got me into Neil Gaiman in the first place. But then I reread it a few years ago and it just... didn't excite me. The mystery wasn't there.

The Ace Ventura movies. They were my jam when I was a kid, but some time ago they came out from behind the paywall on Amazon Prime and I was like "shit yeah I'm watching these" and I only got about halfway through the first one before I had to turn it off. It was just...so bad. So bad.

Hocus Pocus - I think I wore out our VHS tape from the number of times I watched it as a kid. I re-watched it a couple of years ago when it came out on HBO in the middle of the night and MY GOD was it awful!

There was a 'Frog Prince' made for tv movie that I watched when I was a kid and it was the most magical thing I'd ever seen. Ran into it on YouTube a few years back--the songs were pretty cute still, but holy crap was it awkward and unlovely. The frog makeup, hoo boy!

The Hobbit was my favorite Tolkien as a kid. The only one I liked, really. But now it is my least favorite.

Powerpuff girls. I tried to rewatch recently and as much as I still love the concept I just really didn't enjoy.

Princess Gwenevere and the Jewel Riders (though she was named Starla here)

I loved it when I was little, but it's nowhere near as well-animated as I remember and the story's a bit simplistic.
