Writing thread!

Or NaNo thread whatever you prefer.

How is NaNo going for you guys so far? Have you started writing your masterpiece?

Re: Writing thread!

(Anonymous) 2015-11-01 08:40 pm (UTC)(link)
I was up until 2am trying to throw together a plot. RL interferes and I've done no writing today, ugh. I am so unprepared. How are you doing?

I stayed up until midnight so I could start right away like I always do and then when it came time to start I completely blanked on my main character's name. Then I got to 164 words before going to bed and I haven't gotten back to it yet. But there's still plenty of time left in the day.

I've started! I have a pretty good outline (at least for the beginning) and I'm pretty hyped about it. I only got a little bit of writing done on my lunch break but when I get out of work, it's going to be writewritewrite until The Walking Dead comes on. :3

I have a writing group thing going on with at least one other person tomorrow so if that goes well it'll be a weekly thing. \o/

Re: Writing thread!

(Anonymous) 2015-11-01 08:55 pm (UTC)(link)
I started last night before going to bed (Eastern Europe here), got about 2,5k done, and I'm hoping to get to 5k before Monday, just because I know that I won't be able to do as much during the week what with school and all. Not much has happened yet, I'm establishing the daily life of my main character.

Re: Writing thread!

(Anonymous) 2015-11-01 08:58 pm (UTC)(link)
It's okay, I hit 2.5k yesterday, so I'm ahead. I'm a bit worried about week 2, though, because the middle is where things start getting vague.

I just can't believe I hit 3k already. I normally write so slowly. This year I do have most of the plot and characters all figured out, and I actually feel confident... this is NaNo, though, so I'm sure I'll be cursing at my manuscript by this time next week. :D

I'm at 3333 words exactly now! Aiming to be at at least 3500 before midnight in 40 minutes, maybe even at 4000! (A girl can hope!)

Had a busy day so I barely have 300 words... but there's still almost two hours before the day ends. I can do it!

I got a chapter and a half written today on my multi-chapter fantasy fic. Chapter 3 is totally written because I got the urge to write that one this morning. I have to finish the first two chapters before I can post that one, but it will be nice to have three full chapters to post all at once.

I have a bit of a question: I currently have a goal of 420 words a day to total 100k words by the middle of June for the Extreme Big Bang. Quite a lot of the time, I struggle to meet my daily goal. I am interested in what I'm writing, but I'm currently writing some exposition bits which is kind of boring, and I'm not sure if I'm going to start writing any faster even when I do get to the part of the plot that I really want to write. I know it's often said that writers should get a daily goal and stick to it, but the fact that I'm struggling makes me wonder if it's actually going to be something worth reading.

Has anyone ever had this problem? Did you finish writing your story, and/or reach a part where it was smooth sailing in terms of getting the words out? Did you end up with (what was, in your opinion) a good story?

Re: Writing thread!

(Anonymous) 2015-11-01 09:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Every time I start feeling like I can't make my daily goal, I start obsessing over numbers, eventually stop writing altogether, never finish, and feel like a loser. Keep at it, and you will have written an entire story. Stop, and you have nothing to show for your effort.

Outlined my Yuletide assignment
Outlined my Big Bang and contemplating writing a second one for the same exchange
Contemplating signing up for another Big Bang but I don't have any story yet (at least not a shorter story that I can give time to).

I also want to write a treat for Yuletide. Really spreading myself thin here but I'd like to do all this.

Research question

(Anonymous) 2015-11-01 08:55 pm (UTC)(link)
For teachers of high school- elementary school.

What are the most obnoxious types of parents you have to deal with? The only type I can think of is the parent who thinks their kid can do no wrong.

Re: Research question

(Anonymous) 2015-11-01 09:05 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm not a teacher myself, but you might want to check out some AskReddit threads on this as it comes up there sometimes. Here's a couple of threads (I've just barely skimmed through the top comments of these though):

Re: Research question

Parents who get really upset about fees just as if they weren't told about them when they first enrolled their kid (I worked in a private school).

Parents who insist on babying their kid no matter how old they get.

Parents who try to take control over school events by micro-managing everything (like insisting certain equipment be used, trying to force teachers to accept like guest performances even though they would be inappropriate).

Parents who talk trash about staff members they dislike to other staff members.

More annoying/depressing than obnoxious, but there was a parent who was in denial about her son having some developmental disorder (I think it was autism, but either way it was really serious. He couldn't express himself and only talked by repeating other people's words, he couldn't do most tasks, and would throw temper tantrums - he's currently eleven), which was really frustrating because we're not trained experts in that kind of thing and it was hard to help him at all.

You've mentioned it yourself, but parents who think their kid can do no wrong are absolutely the worst. There was this one kid who would be really condescending and talk down to other kids and when we mentioned it to his mother, she actually started making condescending comments about those other kids too.

When I was teaching the most obnoxious parents I had to deal with were parents who were convinced that their child's performance reflected their own parenting skills and wouldn't allow them to do their work themselves.

These were the kinds of parents who couldn't understand that the fact that they had done all of their kid's homework didn't mean I would be giving their kid an A grade, because their classroom performance just didn't match up.

This was rare, mind you, but every time it happened I was tempted to lower the next letter grade a notch just out of spite. I never did, but god damn you annoying helicopter parents. Just let your kid do it themselves!

I've written the first one third of my Yuletide assignment and I'm loving the process. I'll be slower during the weekdays, of course, but I think I can safely assume I'll be done with the thing soonish and will have time to write some treats (possibly even for the same recip, because their prompts made me very excited :D).

Halp~. Anyone have any herbal/plant herbalist or even Wiccan sites that I can use for research for a short story?

Especially helpful if it includes where the plants are indigineous to so I don't go around sticking two plants together that are next to impossible to find in the same area.

I'm writing a 'Red Riding Hood' type story for a Fairy Tales collection and one of the character's grandmother is a herbalist/witch (I haven't decided yet) and I want to stay as close as possible with plants that are/were traditionally used for healing etc.

I've bookmarked a section on natural and alternative treatments on Consumer Lab and the herbal library on the American Botanical Council website.

My writing is going well, but I have a writing buddy(I beta 'd them in the past) who is frustratingly insecure and keeps a lot of good stuff as drawerfic because some ex-friend of hers likes to convince her that "nobody will read" anything that friend disapproves of (wrong ship, characters she doesn't like, AU's she doesn't like). Sometimes she won't even write some ideas because of it.

I'm not mad at her, but I wish she had the confidence to tell this asshole to fuck off and mind their own business.

Think I'm gonna just quit Nano now and save myself the heartache. I haven't written anything, I don't know how to start, I don't know where to go from there... sigh... I should just stop trying to write altogether. I've never won Nano, and I'll never write anything worth reading.
