Whining about (white) guys and slash ships being more popular than kickass women in fandom is always going to be a bit pointless because a) the majority of shipping fandom are women b) the majority of those like men and c) fandom has always been at least somewhat libido-driven.

I always wonder how people make this line of thinking mesh with the idea that slash ships are so popular because there are so many more (good) male characters in most stuff created by the mainstream media where men are the demographic most targeted and most represented on the writing staff and other people involved in its creation.

Apparently TV shows have more better male characters because they're mostly written by men and fandom focuses on male characters because it's mostly straight women. Is there anyone interested in female characters then?

Plus anything with a mostly female cast tends to be assumed to be for women, but this logic says that straight women want to see more male characters, so that's weird to me.

See, but following the logic of anything with a mostly female cast being targeted at women, and most fanfic writers being female...then by sheer number, those would be the fandoms generating most fic.

Which is not the case.

So yes, I do think that straight (and possibly bi, but can't speak for those) women will always want to see more male characters, especially if they're in fandom for shipping.

Gotta agree. You can't guilt people into caring about ships that they just don't emotionally care about, or write about couples that don't get them excited (creatively or otherwise).
I suppose more awareness of personal bias is good, but at the end of the day, you can't really police preferences that much.

I also want to laugh my ass off and roll my eyes into my head when fandom feminists say het pairings with white man/WoC are more progressive than pairings with two white dudes. When was the last time censors wouldn't allow a heterosexual pairing on TV because it was interracial? Here's a hint: It was before any of you little dumbasses were born.

It's pointless, yeah, but still funny to call people out when they pull the holier than you attitude and desperately pretend they just care about good writing and gay rights.

On a serious note, I don't think discussing fandom patterns and call people out on their misogyny is pointless especially when slash fans hide their personal preference for white cock behind concern trolling on female characters.
I think it's especially interesting to study it all from the perspective of whatever this generation of young women really doesn't seem to be able to relate to female characters or not even if, in many aspects, nowadays women are better represented than years ago. My mother's heroines were more or less sexist and mary sue characters that fangirls overinflated and shipped with everyone.
