"Trigger warnings are pointless because if you have a trigger you should get therapy."

Some people literally can't access a therapist to save their lives, some people are getting therapy as you speak your argument but it doesn't cure things overnight, and trigger warnings are actually a type of therapy themselves. If you're warned that a trigger is coming, you can prepare yourself for it until you're no longer triggered by it. Meanwhile, putting a trigger warning on something costs you nothing.

I agree, though m problem with trigger warnings is they have grown way beyond what is reasonable for triggers.

I've seen people demand trigger warning for fruit and pigeons. Like no, just no.

There's a difference between a trigger and something that makes you uncomfortable.

Yup. And some people have been through therapy and will still probably have some triggers throughout their life. There are certain things about bullies and certain kinds of incest that will still trigger flashbacks or at least a panic attack for me. I know to avoid fics that are labelled, and I'm not going to get mad at someone for triggering me. But all the therapy in the world isn't going to remove the bad memories from me.

Please come back with this argument once "Trigger warnings" recovers its meaning, because right now? It's a meaningless expression that people use to complain when they see something they don't like.

This.

It's also why I stick to "Choose Not to Warn". It's just easier when people want trigger warnings for everything from character death (which is totally reasonable) to ice cream. It's not that I'm slacking off. I'd just rather people avoid my fic than deal with 50 variations of "you need a warning for this".

nayrt. I agree, I'm a big fan of Choose Not to Warn for the same reasons. All the bases are covered at once.

I don't even think character death needs to be warned for. What is wrong with seeing what happens in the story as you read it?

Because some people just don't like character death to the point where it's a waste of time for them to read the story.

If your story would be ruined with that as a warning, maybe it's not that good.

Also it's fandom and not everyone wants to read about surprise death in their escapist hobby.

My problem with TW is that they aren't used to help people so much any more. They were a good thing when they were used to help people, now they are used more as a means to insult people who neglect them. "Warn for this shit, shit lord!"

What mostly seems to get triggered now is peoples anger. Not any kind of trauma.

It costs me time and effort, which is not inconsiderable when you look at the long list of potential triggers people want to be warned for. Even if I'm willing to consider the obvious ones, there'll always be another person with a trigger you've never even heard of. Am I allowed to draw a line, or is it my responsibility to try and warn for every single thing that might trigger someone?

My argument is that no, it's not my responsibility. It'd be nice if I warned, and I'd be helping people out... but it's my choice. Just like if I decided that not being around cell phones helped my mental condition, so every person I encountered in public isn't allowed to use their cell phone when I'm around. I don't get to ask that, and people aren't awful for telling me no.

Typing up a warning seems like a far lighter burden than being barred from accessing your phone whenever you're in the presence of a particular stranger...
