You're not the only one, OP. As much as I love the show, I'm starting to associate it with the negativity and it doesn't help that a friend had been bitchy about it BEFORE the Zamii incident...

(Anonymous) 2015-11-13 12:24 am (UTC)(link)
We're most of the bullies really from the su fandom though? From what I can tell, zamii's su fanart was only part of the reason why all the assholes were targeting her.

Anyways, the whole thing does leave a kinda bitter taste in my mouth. Even though I don't think the su fandom is the worst fandom ever or anything, there's stil a lot about it that rubs me the wrong way. Like, I've never met a group of people that so adamantly hated and targeted abuse victims and people with mental illness, I mean damn.
But, I've stillmanaged to find a good handful or so of su blogs that aren't run by bullies and aren't pro-call out culture, so there's still hope.

(Anonymous) 2015-11-13 01:46 am (UTC)(link)
The call out posts I found made it seem like people had been doing this through multiple fandoms, especially though homestuck. But the SU creators addressing it makes it most heavily associated with SU, but this is a problem way deeper than just one fandom.

It seems like more of a reason to not use Tumblr than to avoid any specific fandom.

It's just a coincidence that it happened in SU of all fandoms on Tumblr. At least one person in almost every fandom I've been in there has had a problem with death threats and suicide commands at some point. Good thing is, most people don't actually try to kill themselves when they're told to. Bad thing is, telling anyone to do it is like Russian Roulette.

(Anonymous) 2015-11-13 05:21 am (UTC)(link)
But avoiding some fandoms ON tumblr can make your tumblr super drama free and fun.

Tumblr is all about following the right people.

I've (unintentionally) witnessed two fanartists getting targeted for using wrong wording (they where both ESL) and boy did their inboxes blew up, not to mention the people who where saying nasty stuff tagged with their names. It wasn't SU, but it really brought to light the fact that tumblr's morale code is really fucked up. Specially in recent years where anything that's not up to their standards will get targeted.

Seriously, tumblr seems to be a haven for the scum of the universe in fandoms, and that's saying something when 4chan and Rule34 are out there.

I get how things can get negative by association, but it's a shame to lose your love for it because of them... maybe just take a break from fandom/tumblr for a while?

(Anonymous) 2015-11-13 12:46 am (UTC)(link)
Watch the show, avoid the fandom.

I'm seriously disgusted by what happened, especially since some of them might be trying to make themselves out as victims somehow?(Seriously WTF?) I refuse to let them ruin the show for me though.

(Anonymous) 2015-11-13 01:10 am (UTC)(link)
It's not really the show itself that caused that, I mean the show's tone/message is pretty much the complete antithesis of how the more unpleasantly vocal people in the fandom are acting. I think it's just that people who are controlling assholes, will find some channel or excuse for their assholery - it doesn't really matter what, since it's just an excuse. There's been lots of these types of people who use religion as their excuse for a long time, and social justice seems to have gained popularity recently. It's really more about certain kind of people who feel the need to condemn others to make themselves look or feel better.

(Anonymous) 2015-11-13 01:13 am (UTC)(link)
I've seen people suggesting that that the show should end to punish them. I cannot see how that would work or accomplish anything other than vengeance and "blood for the blood god" I mean think about it logically.

Ending the show and saying it's because of them is not likely to convince a lot of them. They have rejected every other callout people, even those running the show have given them. Are they likely to be convinced they're at fault by the show ending?

No. They're going to blame someone else. Probably zamii herself and her supporters. These people are too high on the illusion of moral righteousness. They're probably going to blame everyone else for raising an issue of it. They're going to blame zamii for "taking representation away from children."

At this point they either unable or refusing to see they're at fault. They would then have to accept that they did something very bad. They don't WANT to accept responsibility for that.

Also zamii is also a big fan of the show, and she's in a shaky mental state right now. Do you think finding that a show she loved ended because of what happened to her is going to help her?

Also it's going to punish the target audience, children for something they understand nothing of.

So all it would accomplish likely is making everyone miserable and maybe even MORE bullying to those who the hatemob decides to blame.

(Anonymous) 2015-11-13 01:32 am (UTC)(link)
Also this whole "punishment" thing, especially since the majority of the fans have absolutely nothing to do with the drama, would kinda totally go against the values the show is trying to get across.

Aren't most of the watchers like... kids... anyway? I mean the older online fandom is more apparent on the Internet, but it's a popular cartoon on CN? So it'd mostly be kids disappointed that a show they liked got suddenly cancelled.

They've not just rejected the criticisms from the Crewniverse, they've turned on them for it - accusing Rebecca Sugar of being a pedophile, etc.

There is a reason I never got into the fandom even if I love the show. My advice? Love the show, share with with a few people you trust. Otherwise? Avoid, avoid, avoid. I do the same with Night Vale too.

Echoing everyone else here, ignore the fandom. Assuming you're on Tumblr, turn off your anon (idk why anon is a feature anyway) and just don't go into the tags. Keep a handful of people you trust on your dash to reblog relevant things for you. Not having anon on prevents assholes from being jerks when you happen to tag something you make.

Idk, it's simple for me because I've always been more of a fandom lurker anyway. I don't even read fanfic and I can't draw so meta and memes are really all I'm here for.

(Anonymous) 2015-11-13 01:51 am (UTC)(link)
I could have sworn there was a f!s discussion of her and why she had a hatedom of her own a few weeks before the SU incident? (I remember the tl;dr was basically years ago a friend of hers was accused of being a child molester, she defended her friend, then lol whoops he really was a convicted child molester. Because everyone always immediately can tell when they're friends with a bad person and those people aren't very good at lying and manipulating others at all! /sarcasm)

I just find it sad SU got the blame. It would kind of be like blaming Pokemon fandom for all the Chris Chan hatedom.

I'm not a part of this fandom, but I was so appalled at the behavior of fans that it got me more active in commenting on artwork. Just saying something positive to any art I come across. I mean it's hard sometimes if it's something I don't like, but I at least want to counter such a toxic culture.

(Anonymous) 2015-11-13 05:27 am (UTC)(link)
I was already tired of the SU fandom and the whole Zamii thing just made me want all those people to nope out of fandom all together.

I know fandom always has it's problems but I feel like the dog piling and bullying has reached new levels with how public all social media is these days. I miss when fandoms were a little more enclosed and you could escape drama a lot easier.
