"Heck, look at FS. Plenty of ladies ready and willing to say they love slash cause it's hot and why do they need another reason?"

I invite you to prove or disprove this anon.

One) I would not condier F!S a good representation of the majority of slash readers.

Two) I read slash because I just like to imagine hot guys fucking. Then again, all the porn I read is because I like imagining hot people having sex. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Oh I wasn't talking about representation, I was only talking about the quoted claim.

I read/write m/m a) because I find it hot, and b) because if I had to label myself it would be asexual so I don't really have too much interest in reading anything where I could/would insert myself.

Me too, anon. This.

Well, for starters, a couple of the slash pairings I like wouldn't qualify as putting "any two white guys" together, 'cause they're interracial (Morgan/Reid, Troy/Abed), so there's one example of not following the stereotype right there.

When it comes to which slash couples I like, my reason for liking them is because I genuinely think they have the right kind of chemistry. I like pairings where the people in question have had a long and close friendship that I could easily see turning romantic, be they slash or het or femslash.

Sure, the people in the slash ships I like being attractive is nice as well...but hell, TV is pretty much nothing but attractive people a lot of the time, so it's not like you're going to be likely to escape that for the most part regardless of who or what you ship. I also ship male characters I find attractive with women, so...

Yea, this. (Both in that I have interracial pairings, slash and otherwise, and that I like pairings because of the chemistry and dynamics. Close friendships are a favorite of mine but I also have ships that are drastically different than that; I ship a bit of everything and that includes slash, het and femslash.)

Though I will admit that there's probably a larger number of slash pairings I ship, I think that boils down to 'there's more male characters in media, so in many cases those relationships are the ones that are focused on, and I'm drawn to them because I like the dynamic'.

TV is pretty much nothing but attractive people a lot of the time, so it's not like you're going to be likely to escape that for the most part regardless of who or what you ship

For that matter, even if you're into video games the majority of characters are attractive in some way. (Aliens included, lol.) Most the characters I ship I find hot (both male and female), but I have shipped characters I wasn't really attracted to.

It me. :P

Though I also like the whole age gap/more experience/etc type thing to, so both of those things, plus the friendship thing is one of reasons I love Kirk/Bones.

Yeah, I like slash because it's hot. I like het and femslash because they're hot too.

Re: Slash fans of FS

(Anonymous) 2015-11-14 09:47 pm (UTC)(link)
I mean, I ship what appeals to me. I can't explain it beyond that.

Captain America was Steve/Peggy, Steve/Bucky, Steve/Sam

Star Trek is Kirk/Spock

Legend of Zelda is Link/Zelda

Star Wars is canon pairings

I ship things because I like the characters and their interactions. I basically always end up shipping the most prominent characters. In a lot of things, that's dudes.

I do love slash because it's hot though, no lie. Hottest porn for me is always between dudes.

Re: Slash fans of FS

(Anonymous) 2015-11-14 10:02 pm (UTC)(link)
I happen to think lots of my ships are hot, but I don't ship characters together just because they're both hot if their dynamic doesn't interest me, or I think it's OOC for them to want to fuck each other.

Re: Slash fans of FS

(Anonymous) 2015-11-14 10:10 pm (UTC)(link)
IDGAF about how "hot" a ship is, I ship characters whose relationships I find interesting. This applies to slash, femslash, and het.

I'm also one of the few people in existence who have zero interest in porn though, whether written, drawn or live-action, so obviously I'm going to have different priorities from the people who are in fandom mainly for the smut.

The fact that it's really hot is definitely one of the reasons that I like slash.

I also think romantic slash stories are... not more satisfying than het romance stories, but it is easier to enjoy them. There are fewer barriers to enjoying it. Because you don't have to worry about gender roles & you don't have to compare yourself to one of the characters - I mean, you can put yourself in the shoes of one the characters, but you don't have to worry about you're as good as the characters or whether you deserve to get made out with. You can just lose yourself in the romance more easily.

And I also think that I probably do have some issues wrt gender & sexual self-expression that make it easier for me to enjoy slash, honestly.

But the hotness of it is definitely an aspect. Not denying that in the slightest. Doesn't particularly bother me, either. I mean, porn's porn.

There are more than one reason I read slash. Yes, a lot of times it is just because two guys are hot. But my slash OTPs tend to be my OTPs because I find the characters and their dynamics interesting. And if I really love a ship I don't just read smutty fics, I'll read it all. I love character exploration.

But yes, sometimes I just want two hot guys together, and there is nothing wrong with that.

I'm not a lady, but I do like slash just because I find it hot. I couldn't give less of a fuck about what the implications are for the erotica I consume, since slash doesn't stand a chance of hurting a real person.

And generally it's way more interesting than whatever canon hetero by-the-numbers romance that the writers try to shoehorn into the source material.

Re: Slash fans of FS

Nah, the claim's a valid one.

What's stupid is acting like this is any different than the way any given group of people choose what they fap to.

Straight dudes don't jerk it to lesbian porn because of the deep emotions and characterization. Gay dudes don't jerk it to gay porn because of the deep emotions and characterization. That they get a bee up their asses when women have the same ignoble reasons for choosing our masturbation material that they do is a sexist double standard, plain and simple.

+1

Well, I have to at least like the characters.

But yeah, I'm mostly into it because I think two dudes together are hot. Also anal is hot. duh. Not rocket science.

Also risk of pregnancy is nonexistent unless you're reading mpreg. Bliss.

Depends on my mood. Sometimes I want the hot, sometimes I want the interactions/social explorations.

And I look at slash specifically for both of these reasons because"
1. it mimics my gayness IRL
2. but is two steps removed so it doesn't feel "too real" and make me uncomfortable.
3. There's more slash than femslash floating around outside of specific fandoms.

Re: Slash fans of FS

(Anonymous) 2015-11-15 02:14 am (UTC)(link)
Well, I like slash, but I also like femslash and het slash. I like it because it's fun to imagine how certain characters would act if they were in a relationship. I like exploring their feelings on the matter and wondering how their lives would be like if they were in a relationship with the other half of my pairing.

Re: Slash fans of FS

I'm more of a shipper than a slasher.

I like some dynamics that are more common between guys in the media I watch, so I have many m/m ships, but if I see similar dynamics between f/f or m/f I end shipping them too. Also, the characters don't have to be good looking for me to ship them.

So... maybe I have a thing for certain dynamics and that's what it's "hot"* for me?

*"Hot" because I don't only read porn, so there's that too.

Right now I feel like I'm the one person on this comm who fits into the straight white female slasher stereotype. Yes, I'm a straight female who happens to be white. Yes, I do like slash for the tired old reasoning of "One guy is hot, two guys together is hotness squared", and have used that reasoning myself. Often they end up white too, but I don't think that is because I have a problem with POC characters, I think it is simply because more often the Main Characters tend to be white (yes, I know, that means more representation is needed, I won't argue with that).

But I am more in it for characters. If I like the characters and think they have an interesting dynamic that I'd like to explore a romantic angle on, then I will hunt fics that ship them. I also tend to favour plotty fics. I can live without explicit sex scenes if a fic has a good plot and a decently written romance.

I also read a lot of het too. I will say that all the same things apply to it as well - I want characters I like, who I think have potential together, and plot. I don't necessarily need porn.

I don't often read femmeslash. I don't feel a connection at all to lesbian sex. That does not mean I never read it, but I am even less interested in any sex scenes and more interested in the character combinations and plot.

I have no illusions that slash is at all similar to gay erotica, or that it really reflects RL gay experience. I don't expect gay men to behave like characters in slash fics.

I don't think my liking slash has any "social justice points", but I will say this - I grew up with the mindset of "gay is wrong, hate the sin, love the sinner". I only shook that off when I started reading slash. How much does that affect Real Life? Well I won't insult gay people for being gay.

There are slash pairings I love, and I love reading hot smut about those pairings.

Do I love those pairings and the smut written about them because the characters are hot? Not really? I don't think there's anything wrong with people who read slashy smut because they love reading about hot dudes fucking. But that's not even close to my primary motivation.

My primary motivation is that sometimes two characters will just have a dynamic that makes me want to read about them being madly in love and having extremely hot sex on the regular. And sometimes (not always) those two characters are both men.

Do I pick my pairings based on looks. Not in the least. However, I do kind of have headcanon images of what the characters look like, and those headcanon images are sometimes more physically attractive (by my standards) than the characters are canonically. Take from that what you will.

I ship my M/M pairings for the same reason I ship my M/F or F/F pairings, because I like the pair's chemistry. I like fic that's plotty and/or character driven. I do enjoy sex scenes but I'm no as into smut for smuts sake.
