talk about work thread

[personal profile] diet_poison 2015-11-20 11:53 pm (UTC)(link)
woooot, made it to a fucked-up Friday post just in time for a virgin GC!! this probably won't be the first comment that publishes, but even so, it's a weirdly satisfying feeling.

so anyway, we haven't had a thread (that I've seen) about peoples' jobs in a while, so I thought I'd start one! Anything good, bad, interesting, or funny happen at your place of employment recently?

Mine in a reply since it's slightly TMI (healthcare related).

TMI: body parts

[personal profile] diet_poison 2015-11-20 11:56 pm (UTC)(link)
so I transferred to another area recently and started working with surgical specimens. One of the things that I started doing that I'm now doing several times a week is frozen sections, where we flash freeze and cut tissue during surgery for intraoperative consult, which is, to me, really exciting and cool, especially since I never thought I'd be qualified to do something like that when I graduated. Today I got a brain tumor that needed to be diagnosed and I had to call the fellow and get instructions, then cut it in half to take a section out of it, and I had this moment of, holy shit, I am literally cutting up pieces of a living person's brain.

I don't know what I expected when I started searching for full time work a little more than a year ago, but it definitely wasn't that.

Okay...you get the specimens AFTER they've been removed from the person or you cut them from the person?

Got my Christmas bonus this week! It is double what it was last year. So that is awesome.

Also, next week we might be able to get overtime depending on whether we get a stabilizer shipment. I hope it comes in on Monday!

After interviewing eight candidates and rejecting seven, my new boss decided he needed more temps to handle the Christmas rush. Two people interviewed, and he took them both.

One stopped responding to phone calls and was removed from the schedule. I met the other a few days ago, and he gave me a vibe that I have only had twice before in my life--once from a man in the front room of a psychiatrist's office who talked to himself and couldn't stop twitching, and the other from Anthony Perkins playing Norman Bates. (Also, he looks like someone erased a surfer dude's face and photoshopped in Nicolas Cage's face, only they shopped everything too small except the eyes.) I'm morbidly curious to see how he does in a direct sales role.

(Apparently, the problem is one of salaries. Corporate refuses to pay entry-level employees more than $9 an hour, so the first chance the get, they go a few towns over where the minimum wage is $15 an hour. My boss actually passed up a pay raise once to get the entry-level pay raised instead, because he simply can't hang onto employees like this.)

Work: I have too much of it. Deadlines are looming. People keep piling on more projects that they want me to be a part of.

I'm procrastinating right now.

Bleh.

I despise deadlines, which is why I love waged work. Waged individuals might generally not make as much as salaried individuals, and I might not be waged my whole life, but right now, I love it. No homework.

I have so many deadlines and it's only terrible because of the holidays. I spent half of the summer bored out of my mind and now they want everything RIGHT NOW.

So I work in a government agency processing application forms.

I had, a number of weeks back, an application come across my desk that was frankly a mess. I send a long involved email back to the person describing everything that was wrong and how to fix it / where they might be able to find the information they need. Couple of days later the application form comes back. Better but still a mess. Another long drawn out email back leads to another slightly less FUBAR application and so on and so forth. Business practice, btw, is to send out an automated email basically saying "Is wrong, Try again" for each attempt, not to contact them directly. But it seems like this person needs more in-depth help than that, right? So I figure I'll help them out. So this goes on for a few weeks, Customer crosses a deadline with the application, and it starts costing them money. We eventually get the application form right. and I take some steps to get the rest of the procedure done right fucking quick, trying to save them some money. Which I do. One day, I take a leak, and while I'm gone "workmate D" answers my phone. He says "Oh, I'm sorry, Anon is away from his desk right now, I'll have him get back to you as soon as possible" or something to this effect. I am pissing at this time so I don't know. He tells me of the phone call I send out an email saying "It's done, Here's the thing you need" and get an email back "Dear Anon and Workmate D, Thank you sooooo much for all the help..." and so on and so forth. The praise is being laid on terribly thick. Customer obviously very happy about my help. I think there was a line about naming his first born son after me. Ok not really, but it was a glowing email is my point. This email get's picked up by a boss, who passes it on to their boss, who passes it all the way up. Public commendations are given out to me AND Workmate D, who did dick all btw, but did do just enough that the customer knew his name and put it on the fucking email.

So I'm sharing credit I should have to. It sucks and I'm pissed and a bit bitter, but shit happens.

Down the line, the Big big boss wants to speak to one of us about the event, and as I am a newbie, and workmate D has years of experience, can you guess who the boss sits and chats to? Can you? So there I am, sitting a few chairs away while this dick-head soaks up the praise and answered questions about how he does the work. Big big boss asks the direct question "So How did you help this customer" and I watch as this mother-fucker lies and twists and bullshits his way through it with a bald fucking face. What can I do? Make a scene? Calling him lying sack of shit? Any protestations would look like, and in fact be, nothing but petty self-servingness. That's how you turn a glowing letter of praise into used toilet paper.

So now, as in today, this cheeky sod sits there and starts correcting my work. "You shouldn't do it this way, it should have been done that way" Thinks because he got to sit with the boss and play Mr Bigshit that suddenly his shits got big?? I mean I'm new, but I been at the job long enough to know how to do some stuff. and yeah, sure, I could do it his way, but my way works for me, and isn't causing any issues, so what the fuck is this about?

Ugh. Long email was fucking long but I am most unhappy.

Busy season is ending! I think. I didn't have to work very long hours this year as I'm still an associate, but next year I'll be on long weeks and working Saturdays a lot during the fall. Better enjoy it while I can.

For real! Working frequent Saturdays would make me reconsider a job, not because oh noes I can't work weekends!! but because I go to YGO locals every Saturday and it's sort of a social cornerstone for me right now.

What do you do?

I've just traveled six hours and 600 miles, got two hours and 200 miles left.

This will be the third day in seven that I've done over a sixteen hour shift.

I got slapped in the face by one of the kids I work with because I wouldn't let her yank out her g-tube and now I have a long scratch from the corner of my eye to my chin. She really needs a one on one aide, but the district thinks she doesn't even though she's constantly hitting us and her classmates. On the plus side, one of the other kids told me I looked like a princess because I have twisty (curly) hair and another said she loved me a lot because I made school fun. The highlight was when I made one of our more fragile kids laugh by playing basketball with her. She's got the sweetest laugh in the world.

oh my gosh. That's intense.

Sounds like a bad situation for everyone with the first kid. I hope the district comes around soon.

The huge corporation I work for is in the middle of merging with another huge corporation, so our vacation/PTO/holiday hours are changing and it seems like you have to be on top of your off time hours or you're fucked. It's like they're purposely setting us up to fail. I tend to be good with my vacation hours so I'm not too worried, but I worry about unpredictable time I have to take off (one year, one of my brothers got really sick and I worried that I might not have enough work time off to sort things out). They're also changing our pay period, which isn't that big of a deal to me. And they seem to be having a hard time transitioning everyone into the same healthcare plans. It's a mess. I feel like the company I work for always gets bought out by an even bigger corporation every 5-7 years. It's hard to deal with. You get used to corporate screwing you over one way, only to find out that corporate found a new way to screw you over. *sigh*

As for a more personal level, I've come to the point of my job where I don't trust anybody I work with, and they all annoy me. It's like every individual person feels like they don't need to abide by the rules, but if they find out someone else isn't following the rules they lose their shit and want to rat out to our supervisor how no one is following the rules as if they're the lone saint at the fucking place. That or the department totally goes out of compliance and doesn't follow procedure, and when it's pointed out upper management shrug it off as if it's not a big deal. So much for "quality first". It's a bunch of bullshit.

Work this week was horrible, as I knew it was going to be prior to it starting. Just being crazy busy, though I survived it somehow. I gained a brand new headache though, this time on a different side of my head. I think it's from wearing my contact lenses in too long though. After I went to bed early last night it feels slightly better today, though it lingers.

Work is just messy, one job is very competitive, though I love it and I love what I do. Been dealing with someone in authority who is driving me to compete needlessly with someone else. I'm forced to defend myself from this person who is constantly looking for things to criticize me for when that hadn't been the case. It's a long story...and none of this had to transpire since the person in authority is leaving in a month anyway.

My other job is easy going and nice, though the hours can be long. But I need the money so it helps and I have made a friend there too.
