Sorry, not sure what you mean precisely here

People saying the 'refugees should be welcome' statements are 'baffling', implying that refugees are bad and/or dangerous and statements like that are senseless. Uh, no, not baffling - they're expressions of empathy, concern and compassion.

'All refugees are bad!/terrorists!/out to get us!' are the baffling fucking statements.
(And i do think those people are trolling, myself.)

The sad thing is it's not really baffling just unfortunately unsurprising.

It's true, I suppose - as my FB feed tells me. I guess i feel like here, they're mostly just for trolling/wank purposes.

Only vaguely related but, I've never understood the "it's just trolling" defense. So they're trying to upset people because that's somehow fun for them and that makes what they're saying okay? That just doesn't make any sense to me. I get that the idea is that they're not hurting the people they're insulting in real life, but just because they may not be guilty of one problem doesn't mean we have to excuse another.

Just something that's always confused me that occurred to me. I'm not saying you're trying to defend them here.

OH, no, not defending at all. I say 'trolling' meaning - they're saying it to start shite and *probably* don't think that way (or, I hope they don't think that way).

I don't think trolling is defensible at all, unless it's obviously a *humorous* kind of jokey thing. Trolling to hurt feelings/stir up ugly memories or belittle people is never defensible.

I didn't think you were. My mind just went off on a tangent. I should really learn to keep those to myself so I'll stop confusing everyone.

No, refugees = a huge cost. Our economy already sucks, so suddenly having to find housing, food and money for thousands of refugees is one hell of a problem.

Plus our police are stuck with handling their applications = less time patrolling the traffic, less time solving crimes.

Our government has to cough up hundreds of millions to pay for the extra costs they bring, and this all happens while they are cutting from education, social welfare, and just about everything except the costs of immigration, so yes, all these refugees are not a good thing.

And I disagree.

If you're talking about the US, the economy doesn't really 'suck' - it's certainly much better than it was eight years ago.

Also, the police do not handle Syrian refugee (or other refugee) applications - those *start* at the UN and come down to Federal agencies already in place.

As for costs of 'thousands' of refugees - we've only allowed in 2,200 since 2011 from Syria. And we only cover 'services' for 90 days. They are *all* expect to find jobs and become self sufficient (and statistics say they do more readily than natives. See first link.)

Education and etc. is not being cut *because of refugees* - it's being cut because certain of our government minions believes an under-educated and desperate populace is easier to control. All signs point to 'yes' on that front.

I'm not talking about the US. I'm talking about European countries that have only a few million citizens. Suddenly getting tens of thousands of refugees and hundreds more marching in every day IS straining the system badly. And yes, it's our police that has to handle their applications and move them forward in the system. So sorry if we are not feeling the "Welcome all, open doors all day, every day" attitude all that much.

Well, many of your fellows seem to disagree with you. I'll let you hash it out with them, since it's not US policy/economics we're talking about (and you don't get specific), so I can't know if your claims are 100 percent true, false, or somewhere in between.

I think this video sums up how, really, we CAN help the refugees. It's just overblown fear feeding an insular group-think and prejudice that keeps people saying no. Kudos to the countries that are actually stepping up.

Not just the GOP. There are plenty of Democrats that are sprouting the same nonsense.

If they are integrated right refugees will also eventually repay the government by paying taxes. If the government would just get their shit together it could actually be a good thing in the long run; get those young refugees settled and into the workforce we might avoid the collapse of our pension fund.

Does the refugee situation cost us a lot of money right now? Yes, it does. It's a crisis; crises tend to require a lot of money to solve.

ETA: I agree on the police being stuck handling refugees being a problem but again, I think this is a problem I think the government could solve if they would just stop sticking their heads in the sand and hoping the problem will go away on its own.

I'm not feeling very hopeful about the integration. Most of the refugees coming to our country are from countries whose citizens have very poor employment rates even after living here for several years. They will cost a lot for the foreseeable future, and if more arrive at the same rate, the situation will become even worse.

I'm optimistic, but I think the government needs to do more. My mom works with refugees and I often tag along with her, so I know a few of them myself. Even with the ones whose German (I'm from Germany, in case it matters) was quiet good they can't get paid work (because of the status of their asylum application? I'm not sure, it's all stupidly bureaucratic. I'm honestly amazed at our relief coordinator who keeps track of all these things in her sparetime), so they go from one internship to the next (where they in turn are only allowed to be for a couple of months).

I mean, realistically speaking we won't be able to get every refugee a job, but then, not all Germans have a job either. But we have a problem in our society where we don't have enough young people to fund our pension fund. And suddenly we have an influx of young people.

I had family on a righteous rant about how we can't accept any Syrian refugees because they can't be trusted. When I asked why helping homeless, scared people get away from danger was a bad thing, they very smugly pulled up a picture from Facebook about Syrians that said "if someone gave you a bunch of grapes and told you two of them were poisoned, would you eat any?".

When they smiled and nodded, satisfied with themselves when I said nothing because I was too stunned, I just let it go. You can't argue with someone like that sadly.

No, you really can't. Yuck. I've got a few extended family and friends on FB who are posting shite much like that, and i just.... It's exhausting to even *try* to point out the ridiculous and ugly nature of their 'position'.

So infuriating when someone thinks your stunned silence to their stupid argument somehow implies they've won, isn't it?

You have far better restraint than I do.
