Huh. I just realized that I, too, am not okay with this in fanfic or headcanons, but have enjoyed some fanart of it and as part of a character's progression in canon.

Maybe the fanfic we've come across just hasn't been very good? Fanart allows you to build your own backstory, so you can imagine the character coming to dad-hood in a way that makes sense and works for you. Fanfic, on the other hand, provides a backstory, and that backstory can be disappointing.

As for headcanons, I always find them way too schmaltzy.

It's funny. I'm the opposite. I tent to hate it in canon, but I don't mind it in fanfic or headcanons because I see that as wish fulfillment variations.

The wish-fulfillment thing is exactly what makes me hate it in most fic tbh. In canon it usually doesn't come across as wish-fulfillment, and is therefore way more enjoyable to me because I don't feel as much as if I'm watching some fan recording their embarrassing stupid emotional masturbation.

(Of course, there are some canon examples that come across as stupid wish-fulfillment emotional masturbation too, which I don't like. And I have read a couple of genuinely excellent fanfics with this trope not based on a canon storyline, but only a couple.)

I can understand that, but I guess in fic I can just read it and let it go. But if they do it wrong in canon it sort of ruins the character for me.

as if I'm watching some fan recording their embarrassing stupid emotional masturbation.

Eh, pretty much all fanfic is 'embarrassing stupid emotional masturbation' to some degree, or wish fulfillment.

It doesn't matter to me if writers fulfill a wish or not, I just want it to at least be convincing and well-written.

I do sometimes like it in fanfic, but I'm picky about it.

In fanfiction for me it usually depends on the character - when a reformed bad guy and/or someone whose "adventurous" life was extremely miserable, who does this, especially if it's a cracky sort of fictional universe, I tend to love it. OTOH, when a happy good guy does it, if it doesn't fit his personality and wasn't established as something he's wanted in canon, I tend to usually not like it. Especially if the source material is realistic, but the fic's characterization isn't very realistic.

I never thought about it before, but I'm exactly like this too.

I do like fics expanding on glossed-over "action-guy-turned-dad" storylines that happened in canon but weren't focused on much, but if the whole "action-guy-turned-dad" storyline isn't canonical, I don't like it in fanfic.

I guess it just feels different to me when the storyline is established by the official author vs by a fanfic writer. Don't know why.

Maybe it's the same principle as why fanfics that explores a stupid or weird canon storyline can be really awesome, but fanfics that invent a non-canon stupid or weird storyline, and then explore it, are still bad.

I get that. For me I can't really draw lines when and how I like it and when I don't. I think it depends on how convincing the situation is, how much I like the life he winds up with and simply how much fun it is to watch/read about it.

I'm okay with it, I guess, as long as it is done like Commander Badass Rock Lobster of Manly Guys Do Manly Things.

though that might be setting the bar a bit high... just saying.

It depends on how it's done for me. If everything just kinda stops for the sake of domestic life and clichéd parenthood tropes, I don't like it. If having a child is part of a story that doesn't take it over entirely, it's better, because that means (hopefully) that the story still remains on the character who is now a parent - it's just given them another loved one to worry over in the course of the plot.

for me it depends on the character. For some characters, I'm fine with it, for others hell no.
