Steroid use isn't all that healthy either. And most actors use them to get those comic book physiques.

Come on, you can't post something like that and not provide a link!

It isn't like a gossip item. It is just one of those things. They use steroids to get buff (especially ones that yo yo in weight and musculature).

Other things they do is film shirtless or sexy gaze scenes after doing like 10 minutes of heavy cardio (pushups/pullups). That makes their muscles pop and is the best their muscles will look).

(Anonymous) 2015-11-24 12:16 am (UTC)(link)
I heard Mickey Rourke did this for his part in The Wrestler.

(Anonymous) 2015-11-24 01:03 am (UTC)(link)
Rourke was messed up from drug use long before that. The Wrestler was more like a happy by-product.

Looks plenty healthy to me. Nom.

(Anonymous) 2015-11-24 12:16 am (UTC)(link)
Depends on the artist. Sometimes they get drawn real sexy. Love me some comic booty.

That really depends on the artist, tough.

I mean obviously if you read superhero comics they'll have some muscle, as they are basically human fighting machines.

But just like every artist doesn't draw women with bathing suits for clothes and airbags for boobs, nt every artists draws guys like they had muscle mutations.

Yeah, I came here to say that. Some artists have absolutely no sense of anatomy, it's hilarious. Unfortunately that's "house style" at DC and Marvel for you.

(Anonymous) 2015-11-24 12:29 am (UTC)(link)
This guy is really gross, though. I hate the bald and bearded look, and while he's not stupidly comics-muscular, he still has too much muscle. Yuck.

(Anonymous) 2015-11-24 01:10 am (UTC)(link)
Nah, I like his looks. I'd be afraid that he'd roll on top of me and smother me to death if we slept in the same bed, but as eye-candy? Yum!

(Anonymous) 2015-11-24 11:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Hey Ugly!Anon!

(Anonymous) 2015-11-24 12:33 am (UTC)(link)
There is a whole lot more muscular-but-not-on-steroids and lean guys on comics nowadays than there used to be, though. Praise be.

(Anonymous) 2015-11-24 12:36 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah the freakish muscles was at its worst in the '90s for superhero comics, it's been waning for a while.

(Anonymous) 2015-11-24 12:43 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah. Several characters had a 90s/early 2000s-only steroids phase. For example, Daredevil. Lean or lightly muscular in the 60s-80s and nowadays - roid monster in the 90s.

(Anonymous) 2015-11-24 01:07 am (UTC)(link)
Yep. Sinewy can be NICE.

Wait, so I'm not sure I follow, you can't get into comics because the guys in them look bizarre, but the ones in the adaptations look good, is that right?

I can agree with that. Not that I'm particularly concerned about their muscle health, but the character design for comics is just kinda uninspired. Muscly white dudes in different color palettes.
elaminator: (Jessica Jones)

small spoilers, I guess? (though I think the trailer tells you as much)

[personal profile] elaminator 2015-11-24 12:49 am (UTC)(link)
It really depends on the comic; not all of them are as ridiculous as the images you probably have in mind.

That said, I very much appreciate the live action alternatives. Luke Cage was really damn hot. (Not that the show didn't already have eye-candy, what with Jessica and Trish, but Luke was a welcome addition to that. Those sex scenes...Jesus.)

Those sex scenes are hot. I'm not even attracted to either of them, but it doesn't matter because those scenes were smoking. Especially the one right after they realize the other has powers too. Her first reaction is to rip off his shirt and then they're using their powers to enhance the sex. So, so hot.

I'd count Kilgrave as eye-candy too. I mean, if you ignore the absolutely atrocious things he does and what a bone-chilling, psychopathic villain he is David Tennant is a fine looking man who looks good in a suit. If someone chooses their shows on the amount of pretty I think he would be a point in favor.

Also, I have to ask: where did you get your JJ icon from? I definitely need some, the show completely bowled me over and I think I'll be talking about it for a long time to come.

Luke is so damn fine, like wow. And it's not just because of his body but that he's got a kind heart along with the muscle, have him hold small baby animals and I would actually swoon.

Also agree on your first point, it's all dependent on the artist and their style. Some pull off large muscle well, others... not so much.

(Anonymous) 2015-11-24 01:35 am (UTC)(link)
Try older comics, from the 60s, 70s, and early-to-mid 80s! They tend to have less ridiculous anatomy than what you'll find in anything post-Liefeld.

For more Luke Cage goodness, you should definitely check out the original Power Man & Iron Fist series. It's super cheesy, but also super fun. (Also, the Luke/Danny bromance is awesome and lends itself well to slash, if that's your thing.)

(Anonymous) 2015-11-24 11:35 am (UTC)(link)
SECONDED Power Man and Iron Fist is AMAZING. Also it warms the cockles of my heart that the white guy kung fu character had to be rescued from his own failing comic by ramming him into a good-natured blaxploitation comic. You'd think it'd be the other way around, but Luke is immensely liable solo or in a team, whereas Danny needs other people to bounce off.

(Anonymous) 2015-11-24 03:10 am (UTC)(link)
Even the way he looks can be unhealthy though. The same over exerting combination of exercise and rigorous dieting that actresses subject themselves to for a flat stomach is what some men are prescribed to get a visible six-pack. Healthy muscle has a bit of flab on most people.
