tl;dr thoughts

I sometimes worry that by accepting prompts and writing so many request fics - often without getting so much as a thank you from the prompter :/ - I'm contributing to this culture where people feel like they're entitled to fanfiction and where people don't appreciate how much work and time goes into writing.

That's a valid concern. Me, I wouldn't bother writing for people who can't even muster up a thank you, because frankly that's fucking rude. But you have to decide for yourself what you want to do.

Agreed. A similar thing happened to me. My mutuals were talking about they were dying to see fic of a rare pairing so I wrote it. Got zero comments. Later one of them asked me to write a thing for them. I said no ofc.

Damn right that you did. When someone writes you a fic and puts some effort into doing it because you wanted a particular rarepair or whatever, you owe them a thank you. If you're not appreciative of the favors people do you, then people should stop doing you favors until you learn some damn manners.

As somebody who's prompted in some places and have had computer problems with very limited internet access, sometimes people can't thank somebody who's filled a prompt right away, or may not be even aware somebody's filled something you wanted because of Computer or RL stuff. Shit happens.

Nah. If you can somehow find the time and internet access to request a fic, you can find it to say thank you to the person who filled your request. If you have reason to think that you won't be able to keep track of your filled prompts or thank people, then you need to hold off on making the request until you have the time.

Honestly if I didn't get so much as a thank you I'd be pissed off.

A few weeks back we had the hold 'commissioning fanart vs. commissioning fanfic' debate here in fs and an anon said that the reason why commissioning fic was not ok was that anyone could write fic. It seems to be a semi-common opinion in fandom that writing fic is easy (and not worthy of even a thank you apparently lol). ngl I think request fic contributes to that.

Hoooooly fuck, this happens in real life? If I was ever on the receiving end of this I would abandon the kinkmeme faster than a juggalo abandoning child support.

Well that's just rude as fuck. I've received a few fills before that I wasn't entirely happy with, but even in those cases I would always leave a comment thanking the writer, and I would find something to compliment. (Something that I did think deserved to be noted.)

If someone is going to write you fic, they at least deserve a simple "Thank you". (That shit takes time and effort, and that time and effort should be appreciated.)

Don't reward bad behavior. This is true for life in general, not just filling prompts for people who can't be bothered to thank you for your time and work. If you let bad behavior slide or worse yet, reward it, all you'll get in return is more bad behavior.
