Re: Ugh. Let's talk about periods

Sorry your shark week is being such a bitch. It sucks. Might want to see someone if you'r frequently getting a lot of big clots though.

But this reminds me of a curiosity I've always had about transwomen and wth I'm anon: Are y'all typically grateful that you don't have to deal with menstruation or is it a sore spot reminder of your birth sex?

Obv it's probably different for each person and of course there are cis women who don't have them but I was curious.

This is a rude as fuck question. Your "curiosities" are our lives, and our thoughts on reproductive systems - much like our genitals - are none of your damn business.

NAYRT

A simple "Prefer not to answer" would have done the job. Or just not answering.

"Prefer not to answer" only says "I don't want to say." It doesn't system "your line of questioning is inappropriate and you shouldn't do it." There's a pretty big fucking distinction.

I don't find the question any more inappropriate than asking about periods in general, or masturbation, or poop, or mental illness, or any of the other hugely invasive burning questions that get asked around here. Some people choose to answer, some choose not to. I don't recall seeing anyone jump on somebody because they have no right to ask how we poop.

Re: Ugh. Let's talk about periods

(Anonymous) 2015-12-01 12:42 am (UTC)(link)
Everybody poops, and I can't fathom how you don't see a difference here.

Re: Ugh. Let's talk about periods

(Anonymous) 2015-12-01 12:50 am (UTC)(link)
Well, do you poop in the morning or more toward lunch, and do you sit or squat, and do you prefer a halfway flush or leave it all til the end, and what's the corn ratio typically like, and what about the smell on a scale of 1 to Bog of Eternal Stench, and do you have a spouse and does your spouse poop different or do you find that your poops sync up after time, and do you poop every day or like twice a week or are you severely constipated and have you seen a doctor and if so what did the doctor say and what about enemas, do you do enemas and...

There is no difference. Some people are curious about other people, particularly about ways that other people are different.

NA I think most of the people reading this thread probably recognize the validity of what you're saying, anon, and don't hold your curiosity against you. It seems AYRT is just an angry person looking for an excuse to be angry all over someone.

Re: Ugh. Let's talk about periods

(Anonymous) 2015-12-01 01:59 am (UTC)(link)
Oh shut up. You're the reason everyone thinks we're a bunch of hyper-sensitive assholes.

To answer your question, anon: it's sort of a mixed bag! I would be thrilled to have a fully "female" (if you will) set of organs, and would happily take the associated pain of periods to go along with them. But, on the other hand, I can't say I'm 100% unhappy that I don't experience a monthly crippling pain like clockwork either, haha. So I guess it's sort of bittersweet knowledge? If that makes sense?

Honestly I have to imagine it's worse for transmen on that, just 'cause it's easy to ignore what isn't there. I don't think about periods unless they're brought up; pre- or non-op non-hormone'd transmen would have to deal with them still.

NAYRT, but this is a really interesting point and makes complete sense to me.

I can't say I'm 100% unhappy that I don't experience a monthly crippling pain like clockwork either, haha.

For the record, and you probably know this, but not all women suffer from their periods or even have to pay much attention to them.

My periods are almost unnoticeable (light bleeding, and no other symptoms whatsoever) and I can say that I don't really think about it much. It's just a thing that happens - like when the laundry piles up and you have to dump it in the washer, only less frequent than that.

I sometimes wonder if most men and trans women know that about periods. I'm never sure. The people who talk about their periods tend to be the people who have bad ones (which makes sense), so sometimes I wonder if people who don't have periods are given the impression that they're all horrible and painful and messy and The Worst.

Ah, I see there is a thread devoted to discussing this lower down. Oops. Never mind.

ayrt

Ah, yeah, no, I should have been clearer, sorry-- I'm going by the fact that pretty much all of the women in my family have pretty debilitating cramps with theirs, so I could only assume I'd be much the same. I have two sisters and a lot of cis-female friends, so I know quite a bit about periods!

Right, got it, cool.

In fact, looking at what I said, it kind of seemed like I was saying you might not know things other women know, which wasn't great of me and I apologize.

I guess I sometimes wonder if everybody, including cis women, know that plenty of women have mild periods. Because so much of the talk is about how awful they are, to the point where sometimes I start to wonder if I'm this weird, rare, lucky person. I mean, apart from the thread that sprung up below in response to this one, I've never seen a conversation where women talk about how low-key and painless their periods are. I guess because it's not like it's something we need to vent or get moral support for.

But I expressed it kinda badly.

It's all good, don't worry about it. I got what you were trying to say!

And yeah, I think you kind of hit the nail on the head-- not to sink to clichés, but misery loves company, so it makes sense that people with shitty periods will band together to commiserate about it and lend support, where I suppose there isn't as much to say about an easy one.
