Fandom conspiracies/controversies that you don't get

What are some controversies or conspiracy theories in your fandom that you just don't get?

This was inspired by series 4 of The Great British Bakeoff and some of the stupidest controversies I've seen.

Holiday was sympathetic to Ruby because he was attracted to her? WTF? There was no evidence of attraction. She was clearly a very talented baker who had no self confidence. Admittedly I'm slightly biased because she was my favorite and I relate to her lack of self confidence. But still.

Also, claiming that the judges were biased towards women? I notice that no such comments were made about series 3's all-male final. The men just weren't that good in series 4. And the last male, Glenn, bombed so badly in his final challenge that it would have been ludicrous for anyone else to be eliminted.

* Hollywood

Ruby was good, but IMO, overrated. It became a more obvious toward the end that her lack of experience and finishing skills were a disadvantage, but she had an unfortunate habit of getting teary and apologizing repeatedly for how awful her bakes were. That sort of thing gets very old, very quickly. That said, I don't think it was necessarily attraction on Hollywood's part, and of course, he's only one judge. But I think her looks and the fact that people felt sorry for her didn't exactly hurt her chances.

But overall, series 4 had a weak field of contestants AND a weak finals round, IMO. The winner was not very impressive, either.

Oh, I agree. Series 4 was weak. But I never found Ruby's apologies annoying, probably because I do that too. I don't think it was fake. Some of us genuinely don't think anything we do is good even when it is. I think she was actually pretty skilled, though, at least compared to most of the other people that season. And I don't think her looks or people feeling sorry for her had anything to do with the times she did well. And the times she did do badly, she wasn't the worst.

I don't think her apologies were fake, but that doesn't make them less annoying, honestly. When people apologize for everything because they sincerely feel they messed up all the time, they often fail to realize that by doing this, they're putting an extra emotional burden on everyone around them to provide constant reassurances and affirmations.

In other words, instead of dealing with your insecurities on your own, you're asking everyone else to make you feel better... which isn't going to happen, because that's not really how these irrational insecurities work, you know? I've been on the receiving end of that from friends, and it's very emotionally draining after a while.

Re: Bake Off

Oh, undoubtedly Ruby is a talented baker. I just think that there were other factors in play that gave her an advantage as well, and having a personality that evokes a sympathetic reaction is one of those factors.

That the judges of the UK's version of Masterchef and its variants (pro, celeb, Great Brit Menu) are really biased against female contestants and are way harder on them than the male ones to the point where you can basically predict the episode they are thrown out. I just don't see it at all.

I don't get that in cooking shows in general. Well, okay, occasionally I've felt one of the guest judges on Top Chef were biased. But mostly people are just not as good as the others around them.

Hmm I kinda see that. Just pay attention when people's cooking is described as homily or homestyle. Nine out of ten times they are describing a woman.

1. The Hidden Plot for Phantom of the Opera (though it's died out by now, I think)

2. TJLC for Sherlock

What Hidden Plot?

Re: Fandom conspiracies/controversies that you don't get

(Anonymous) 2015-12-05 10:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh man. It only applied to the 2004 movie. A bunch of fans (I think they called themselves "sleuthers") decided that there were "clues" hidden throughout the movie (such clues were subtitles, lens flares, and other random things) that pointed to a secret story behind the story where the Phantom was the King of Music possessed by an evil spirit and Christine was his Queen. It ended with the Phantom and Christine being together of course, unlike the actual story of the movie.

okay probably not the hidden plot you're going for but i thoroughly enjoy the conspiracy that says the Phantom is actually Frankenstein's monster.

Huh. I hadn't realized that was a conspiracy theory, I thought it was just a crossover comic!

TJLC used to piss me off massively, but now I actually read the tag for amusement. I didn't even notice the moment when it stopped irritating me. Makes exactly zero sense, though, that's true.

As far as the poto conspiracy stuff goes, I dunno that there was anything to get unless you were "habitually wears underpants as hats" crazy.

Queerbaiting. Can't authors and producers have fun with tropes without evil intentions? Fanfiction is practically built over it and we're not that different from the pros.

(Anonymous) 2015-12-06 02:37 am (UTC)(link)
NGL there is some queerbaiting out there but it's not as common as it seems.

The best example is SPN with Castiel and Dean.

(Anonymous) 2015-12-06 03:41 am (UTC)(link)
Okay, but sometimes it is queerbaiting. Sterek--while not baited in the actual show--was absolutely baited by the cast and crew. Jeff Davis literally tweeted shit like "well, maybe if it gets enough support, Sterek will happen!" while having the actors cuddling on a boat. They promised deleted Sterek scenes from later seasons, even.

Queerbaiting doesn't necessarily mean "evil intentions". It's a real thing. I'm sure more things get accused of queerbaiting than is fair, but that doesn't mean it doesn't exist.

Moffat being a racist/homophobe. I can get him being a bit sexist based on past comments, but nothing I've seen/heard leads me to him being racist or homophobic.

*and yes, there are those out there who really believe this.
