I mean...they've proven before they can take a terrible/silly concept and make it great. Don't see why this would be any different.

They took a gun wielding raccoon and a tree that only says I am Groot, and made them into compelling and tragic characters.

ehhhhhhhhhhhh I thought Age of Ultron was pretty bad. I was incredibly bored, even watching it on an airplane. And I feel no need to watch it again.

They're probably not using even 25% of the storyline. I mean, they can't.

I agree that the comic Civil War is salvageable, but based on the trailer and what we already know of the characters involved, it looks like the movie storyline in the movie is going to be something completely different with the only shared elements being the title and the Iron Man vs. Cap conflict being a huge part of what drives the plot.

A pretty clever tactic, if you ask me; using a title associated with a (in)famous comic storyline to draw the attention of comic fans without actually adapting the comic in question. Kind of like what the Nolan Batman films did with The Dark Knight Rises - title has the same acronym as a hugely influential Frank Miller comic, but a totally different story.

Hopefully Civil War will be better than TDKR, though.

*unsalvageable

Fuckinng autocorrect.

I think a big part of what they're doing is finally properly folding The Winter Soldier storyline into the Steve/Tony slapfight, which they utterly failed to do in the comics for no good reason.

I acutally would have agreed with you not so long ago. But the trailer convinced me that they removed the story far enough from the comics that it can make sense in the movie verse. Of course that is no guarantee that the movie will be good, but going from the trailer at least it looks like it could work.

Only...with mutants out of the equation and not even a set-up for inhumans really taking their place, it's going to be a different story with different stakes and some different characters so they can pretty much do what the want with it.

(Anonymous) 2015-12-10 03:06 am (UTC)(link)
Not really - the mutants had been Scarlet Witched at that stage and only had a brief appearance where they said "fuck you both we're staying out of it." Honestly, Registration would make more sense in a universe where people aren't born with powers.

If it was a direct adaption I'd be fucking terrified but from what we've seen so far it's not, it couldn't be really considering that the MCU is missing mutants entirely but like with the other movies there will be some similarities. Overall though it'll more than likely be it's own story.

I'm still a bit wary, just because there are a lot of characters to juggle and frankly I think they perhaps should have waited a bit longer to do a hero vs hero story(purely because it doesn't feel like the Avengers have been Avengers long enough at this point in the movies for the whole vs thing to pack the emotional punch required, but that's more a personal quibble on my part) but it might work. Who knows at this point?

Agreed with everything. My only hope is that because it's going to be pretty dang different from the comic, it won't be as bad.

But like you say, the Avengers haven't been much of a team. They've spent the majority of the time fragmented and infighting, except for some victory moments.
I'm mostly bitter that these 500 characters are all eating up Cap's movie :|

It wouldn't have to be to soon, except that AoU was three quarters of the way to hero vs hero already, so it *also* didn't build the avengers AS avengers in a successful post-immediate-desperate-origin team from Avengers 1. If AoU had been a solid team movie with Steve and Tony actually being friends and allies and trusting each other and complimenting each other and solidifying things that began in the avengers and incorporating the characterization of Phase II, it would work.

But AoU was basically the opposite of that, so it doesn't,

I liked Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl.

(Anonymous) 2015-12-10 01:45 am (UTC)(link)
I know that seems like a total non-sequitur, but I remember what was said before it came out. They're making a movie out of a ride? Are they serious?

The point is, whether a movie is good or bad doesn't necessarily have a lot to do with the quality of the property it's adapted from (and you have to admit there have been some terrible movies adapted from loved books/comics/television shows).

(Anonymous) 2015-12-10 02:00 am (UTC)(link)
I think it will be alright. There is enough good material in source comics for a good story. The movie will have a smaller cast which will help a lot.

(Anonymous) 2015-12-10 03:32 am (UTC)(link)
...I'm just hoping that a movie coming out on my birthday isn't literally so bad that I see so much negativity on my birthday that I just want to bury my face in a whole mound of chocolate to forget...

(Anonymous) 2015-12-10 04:05 am (UTC)(link)
I think if other peoples' opinions about one single movie, good or bad, is enough to ruin your birthday, you should probably take a step back and readjust your perspective.

(Anonymous) 2015-12-10 03:59 am (UTC)(link)
To be honest the only reason I am not looking forward to this movie is because my friends are already having arguments about this movie. Some are Cap fans and some are Tony fans and I'm the neutral caught in the middle who doesn't know anything about the comics nor am I deeply invested in the movies.

(Anonymous) 2015-12-10 04:01 am (UTC)(link)
I was mostly afraid because I thought CW was going to end up as a "Tony is right about everything and everyone and deserves a happy ending despite all the bullshit he's pulled" wankfest the CW comic was.
But after seeing the trailer I think I can finally be at peace for the time being.

The CW comic is bad, but it's also super unintentionally hilarious and I actually reccamond to people who want a quick laugh.

(Anonymous) 2015-12-10 05:53 am (UTC)(link)
Funny, everyone in my neck of the fandom woods has been afraid that CW would end up being "Steve is a pure sweet saint and always right about everything, and no matter what Tony does to try to atone for his past sins, he will always be treated like dogshit."

I feel like you and I read VERY different Civil War comics!

(Anonymous) 2015-12-10 05:49 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, but it's not going to be the exact same story. It can't be, for a number of reasons.

(Anonymous) 2015-12-10 06:06 am (UTC)(link)
I didn't like the comic either. I thought it was a decent idea on paper but way too many characters went off the fucking RAILS

But even so I think the movie will probably be good because they're changing the hell out of the story. It makes sense, because they don't have the rights to WAY too many characters to be able to adapt the story as it is. And instead it's going to be a very small, very personal thing.
