If I ever win the lottery or come into a bit of 'fuck you' money I am going to only dress in clothing from the Regency to the 1920s. I would have to have all the clothing handmade because I am much taller than women who lived during that time period so it would be expensive but if I had the money then fuck it. My husband supports me 100%

con't....

I just wanted to add there is no way I want to live in the past. I like not being someone property and having rights. I just love the clothing.

Here's hoping you get to live the dream, nonnie!

I'm so different, lol. I'm a fundamentally lazy person so I shudder to think of being born in a time when slumming it casual wouldn't have been an option.

Also sports bras. I do not want to live in a world without sports bras.

Eh... would you still feel pretty in corsets and long skirts without having ready access to amenities like hot running water, proper soap, deodorant and shampoo?

Deodorant existed. not in today's form but as talkum powder and perfume. basically the same thing.
and nobody needs shampoo. it's just there so your bathroom doesn't get soapy.

piece of advice: go ahead and dress like this outside of cosplay. Obviously not at work (not if you have a dress code of any sort), but in private life? Absolutely. Pick the historical-looking stuff that's on the practical side and rock it. Yeah, you'll get a few side eyes, but feeling awesome is worth it.

(Anonymous) 2015-12-11 12:23 am (UTC)(link)
Seriously, OP! A lot of my clothes are "historical-looking stuff that's on the practical side." Hell, sometimes I dress like a 1860s widow all in black. As long as you are confident in what you wear, fuck it. Do it!

Great advice. I regularly dress in vintage and rockabilly. And I dare to do it as a plus size girl. And IDGAF what anyone thinks.

Wear what makes you feel good, OP.

(Anonymous) 2015-12-11 05:10 pm (UTC)(link)
I sometimes dress like a beatnik or a hippie just because I like it. Wear what you want, OP, you probably look great in it!

(Anonymous) 2015-12-10 11:51 pm (UTC)(link)
You don't necessarily have to restrict dressing in corsets to cosplay. There are corset enthusiasts who wear them in the everyday. And they're great in the fact that's it underwear so other people can't necessarily tell unless you want them to. Long skirts would be harder to hide, but there's no reason you can't indulge yourself.

(Anonymous) 2015-12-10 11:59 pm (UTC)(link)
I can't get over all the diseases that would be fighting to murder the shit out of me in that time period. I don't want to die of consumption.

But...

(Anonymous) 2015-12-11 12:02 am (UTC)(link)
I don't think there ever was a time period when people dressed like that pic, though. Women wore corsets, but underneath other layers of clothing and not as a top all on its own, and elbow length evening gloves were for formal evening wear and wouldn't have been everyday accessories anyway. It was also rare for women to carry canes as a fashion statement rather than, well, a mark of physical infirmity. If you'd transported that lady in the secret back to say, Edwardian or Victorian times, people would assume she was a rather bold prostitute for the way she was dressed.

Now, if being a Victorian-era sex worker is what you want, far be it for me to stop you, but I don't think it sounds like a nice life.

Re: But...

(Anonymous) 2015-12-11 12:19 am (UTC)(link)
I was thinking the same thing. I'm no expert on Victorian fashion, but what people point to as "Sexy Victorian" is not at all what you see in period photos, fashion plates, advertizements, etc., certainly not for everyday wear. Evening clothes allowed decolletage, but during the day you couldn't dress like in the photo.

So what you're saying is, this is actually modern fashion and not out of date by over a century?

(Anonymous) 2015-12-11 12:13 am (UTC)(link)
Hey, I think you should go ahead and incorporate fashion you like into your every day life! Honestly, I think a lot of women and men both think skirts/dresses and fashions like this are cool. Not that you should care what everyone else thinks, but if you're worried about it, don't be. There's nothing threatening, weird, or strange about dressing in fancy clothing like this. It just makes you look cool. (In my opinion.) It's not like wearing a Pokemon T-shirt every day of the year would make you look. It's more likely to seem classy, cool as fuck, and unique!

I always imagine that (especially these restricting kind of) clothes from the past one wears for fun would probabl become less fun when you HAVE to wear them all the time. Especially considering hygiene during that time. I imagine things could be pretty itchy.

Yeah but then you'd not be allowed to vote...presuming you're female, or go to jail for cross-dressing, if male.

I think the solution for our problem is called "not giving a fuck". just wear the corsets!

(Anonymous) 2015-12-11 07:07 am (UTC)(link)
Don't know about the US but in England cross-dressing itself was not illegal in the 19th century, as the Boulton and Park affair showed.

You might get a few extra stares, but you can wear outfits like that outside of work.

If that feels too uncomfortable for you, maybe get a few friends together for Victorian dress themed excursion once a month.

(Anonymous) 2015-12-11 07:12 am (UTC)(link)
I just wish I could be pretty.
