[The Tempest]

Yeah, the entire portrayal of Caliban was really unfortunate. But I'd argue that entire movie was a trainwreck, so

It was a good movie otherwise, but yes. You're right. That was some serious ~awkward~ to watch.

Okay so I haven't seen this production, but I do know Caliban (and Ariel for that matter) being a metaphor for enslaved indigenous people is a common post colonial interpretation, and can be done (usually casting Prospero in quite a negative light as a result) but THAT SAID that kind of interpretation should be done with nuance and care, and if this production failed at that then... that's a pretty big blunder.

They have him running around in a loincloth, covered in mud, just to start with.

110% loved Helen Mirren, Ben Whishaw and Russell Brand but Caliban was DEFINITELY a questionable choice.

Okay, I do agree that some of the choices regarding Caliban were unfortunate, but I have to ask- did you even read the play? I mean. The original portrayal was pretty fucking racist. There's the whole dehumanizing monster shit, for starters. So yeah, I don't really think it's that far off from what Shakespeare wrote.

(And yes, I know that it can be read as a negative interpretation of imperialism, blah blah blah. Even in that context, Caliban's character is cast in an extremely negative light ON PURPOSE. It's still incredibly racist.)

(Anonymous) 2015-12-12 05:22 am (UTC)(link)
okay I am anon above who hasn't seen this version (probably should i am a big shakespeare nerd) but I think there is still a responsibility to adapt shakespeare's works with purpose and not just go off of what authorial intent likely was - its why people nowadays the ending of The Merchant of Venice as tragic instead of triumphant. If they were trying to point out how fucked up the text is and maybe didn't do it well, okay, but if you're adapting an unsavory play you should be super aware of these things.

So basically, you want directors to change Shakespeare because it's problematic? What about leaving the stuff in there, but acknowledging that it's problematic? Why not bring it up as something that happens in the play and talk about it rather than straight up changing what we're uncomfortable with?

(As far as seeing the movie, I didn't particularly like it personally. Mostly I took issue with them making Prospero a woman. It changes the entire dynamic of all of Prospero's relationships/interactions, and it just didn't really work that well for me. But YMMV and all that.)

OP:

(Anonymous) 2015-12-12 05:31 am (UTC)(link)
But the play itself leaves it open-ended enough that Sycorax and Caliban could straight up be portrayed an non-human fish monster people and not African people.

The "Caliban is Black" portrayal definitely brings out much more of the Imperialism interpretation, but the play itself is supposed to be about Prospero's struggle between forgiveness and vengeance and having him/her become the personification of colonialism definitely weighs down that message.

I unfortunately don't have the book anymore, so I can't point at anything specific, but I do remember that it was fairly obvious that Caliban was meant to be dark-skinned. Considering what was happening during the time this was being written, with colonizing other places and continents? Considering that they didn't really consider Africans- or natives of any kind really, if they were darker than the Europeans- human? I really do think that he was given the fishy attributes on purpose, to exaggerate the fact that he's not really seen as human on top of being darker skinned, whether he's supposed to be African or maybe Native Central/South American.

Not to mention that just because the film DIDN'T take the non-human route, I don't think that's wrong necessarily. You could even argue that having Caliban as a clearly human black man makes the racism/colonialism aspect more obvious and more open to discussion. Discussion is good.

And the fact that the play is about Prospero doesn't actually take away from the Caliban interpretation, by the way. There can actually be more than one theme/story going on in a work at the same time, you know.
