This is bullshit. There are lots of yuri manga with sex written by women for women. No one would ever dare to compare Aoi Hana (a story about lesbians) to Valkyrie Drive (a fanservice show with lesbians used as fap material).

If you enjoy the ones who treat their lesbian characters as fap material for men, good for you, but don't pretend that they aren't exploitative.

(Anonymous) 2015-12-16 12:22 am (UTC)(link)
Lol no. I don't even know this series so I can't comment on whether or not this is an example of "lesbian fap material" or not, but yuri in overwhelmingly written by straight women for women, which isn't anything to be applauded. I've lost count of the amount of yuri material where I check out the artist's other work and it's like 98% yaoi, which makes it extremely obvious that they're just cashing in on things. Some of the artists even admit it. ("I don't usually write yuri but I was asked by [insert publication here] so here it is!") It's really easy to tell at this point whether or not the artist themselves has any love for women.

I think when it is all said and done I would rather take the lesbian fap material written by men. At least I know they genuinely find women desirable.

I dunno what the heck you're reading, but the most prolific yuri authors who are women are lesbians. I've seen the straight women writing yuri you're talking about but it's not as common as you say and it's usually just a one off. There's plenty of actual lesbians writing and drawing yuri.

(Anonymous) 2015-12-16 05:22 am (UTC)(link)
I read all sorts of yuri, some recced by friends, some random, etc. I never meant to imply the most prolific authors weren't lesbians. What I meant to imply was that these people seem to be insisting that if it's written by a woman for a woman it MUST be good, and if it's written by a man (or "fap material for men") it must not be. Considering the fact that many male authors write under female pseudonyms in Japan for shoujo/yuri work it's kind of impossible to gauge this anyway. I wanted to make the point that it's not an automatic A+ awesome if a girl wrote it. I've seen some yuri written by straight women that just comes off as stiff, awkward and kind of gross, where I've seen yuri written by men that I thoroughly enjoyed. I personally prefer the author has some interest in the female body.

As an aside, most of the guys I know who enjoy yuri actually enjoy it for the romance aspect too, even if they enjoy sex scenes too (oh those horrible demons!).

The comment I replied to was just a clusterfuck of sexism.

that certainly seems to be going very much against conventional wisdom

I really like finding out that my favorite yaoi writers have penned yuri. It's a guarantee that I'll enjoy the dynamic and the art.

(Anonymous) 2015-12-16 05:16 am (UTC)(link)
Meh, I've always found that if they write good yaoi, it hardly ever translates to good yuri, and vice versa. One of the better examples of this I can think of is Taishi Zaou. It's pretty obvious she enjoys writing yaoi, but her yuri titles were painful to get through for me.

(Anonymous) 2015-12-16 12:31 pm (UTC)(link)
She's bi, you know.

(Anonymous) 2015-12-16 04:26 am (UTC)(link)
" It's really easy to tell at this point whether or not the artist themselves has any love for women." Oh no, one of the straights are among us, WRITING LESBIANS!!! stay close, sisters, we are under attack by the cis shitlords! God, you lesbians are so hyperbolic and full of shit. It makes me want to reclaim some form of the word for myself that isn't filled with shrieking hysterical bigoted children.

(Anonymous) 2015-12-16 04:30 am (UTC)(link)
Lmao somebody sounds upset.

(Anonymous) 2015-12-16 04:31 am (UTC)(link)
I hope you know that throwing a hissy for and calling lesbians multiple names and mocking them doesn't actually make you look any better...right?

(Anonymous) 2015-12-16 05:15 am (UTC)(link)
Lmfao I would have more shits to give over your obvious lesbophobia if I didn't actually state that I don't give a shit of a dude is writing this stuff either, I would just prefer the author actually find women attractive so I'm not going to sit through a painfully stiff, awkward "love scene" written by a discomfited straight girl who actually doesn't find women attractive at all. Let the artist be a bisexual girl, a lesbian, a bisexual man or a straight one, but no, I'm oh so sorry, I don't like straight women writing/drawing that shit because I can see the awkward right there on the damn page.

Wow at least you admit you hate lesbians.

(Anonymous) 2015-12-16 04:36 am (UTC)(link)
Like bi women don't exist.

(Anonymous) 2015-12-16 05:12 am (UTC)(link)
Um, not in the numbers that you'd think in Japan, straight women writing this shit definitely outnumber bi women in the field, and like I said they make it obvious right in the author note pages that they're not into writing it, they got contracted to.

(Anonymous) 2015-12-16 12:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Your comment is dumb as fuck tbh. So straight women treating their lesbian characters as human beings is worse than men using lesbians as fap material because straight women are straight, how dare they write about lesbians? What the flying fuck.

(Anonymous) 2015-12-16 12:37 am (UTC)(link)
I thought Aoi Hana was considered "S Class" yuri? As in it's all fluff and they're not really lesbians, they're just having a girlhood fling that the audience is meant to assume is going to end when they grow up and marry men.

(Anonymous) 2015-12-16 01:19 am (UTC)(link)
What is "S class" in this context?

I've been watching too much One Punch Man.

Courtesy of Dee Hogan:

"Basically, Class S refers to a close emotional relationship--sometimes even defined as a crush--between two girls, usually of middle or high school age. There are a few different ways this can play out . . . a) idealize how pure and innocent young girls are by making their relationship deeply emotional but totally sexless, b) allow readers to "ship" a same-sex romance without the author actually having to commit to writing a real homosexual relationship . . . or c) is meant to titillate with implication and entendre while still insisting that the girls are interested in men."

Uh... no. You're almost definitely thinking of something else.

(Anonymous) 2015-12-16 06:56 am (UTC)(link)
Aoi Hana feels like one of the only series that isn't Class S tbh.

(Anonymous) 2015-12-16 12:53 am (UTC)(link)
I've seen some people comment that anything beyond kissing is "exploitative" because supposedly women prefer emotional bonds and anything graphic is for men. It's stupid, but it happens.

I'm not familiar with either show you mentioned so I can't say anything about that.

(Anonymous) 2015-12-16 01:33 am (UTC)(link)
So, we've timewarped backwards to the reign of Queen Victoria, have we? After all, she's the one who didn't outlaw lesbian sex because women don't do that sort of thing.

Good to know.

(Anonymous) 2015-12-16 01:51 am (UTC)(link)
I've never heard that. When did it happen? She actually gave that as the reason?

Yeah, yuri fans (and lesbians) suck like that. As a fellow lesbian, I sympathize to anyone who has to deal with that "our love is so pure, because we have no dicks, no dirty kinks or anything but snuggles and discussion of feminist theory here!" bullshit (and transphobia)

To be honest, this kind of thinking is set squarely from the second wave and was championed by Political Lesbians. Aka, "I'm not lesbian, but I hate men because feminism told me to, so I'm going to appropriate your identity and then shame you for wanting to fuck other women, because we made your sexuality a political statement!"
