Are you white? Or Cis? Or Male? This sounds like someone who never had to feel unsafe on the internet unhappy that they no longer get to make the internet unsafe for others.

(Anonymous) 2015-12-18 11:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Tell that to Tumblr.

(Anonymous) 2015-12-19 12:14 am (UTC)(link)
In those days broadcasting your race, gender, sexuality, etc. for everyone to see (whether they cared or not) wasn't a thing that people did like they do now. In those days fandom was mostly about enjoying the content that everyone was a fan of, less about how privileged/oppressed/special anyone was.

Yeah that ...didn't really happen in pre-tumblr lj fandom there, anon.

(Anonymous) 2015-12-19 01:04 am (UTC)(link)
Why are you capitalizing the words cis and male? Those are not proper nouns.

(Anonymous) 2015-12-19 01:09 am (UTC)(link)
yes, we are So much safer now that we have flash mobs bragging driving artists into suicide over political laziness.

Tumblerina detectet.

Try harder, no one takes you seriously.

(Anonymous) 2015-12-19 02:28 am (UTC)(link)
I find it really tiring how no matter how far the "internet SJW mob" goes, anytime someone complains about it, we get this "well you're just mad because you can't make the internet unsafe anymore without getting called out uwu."

Even when some of the people criticizing it are people who used to be part of it until it got too out of control.

Your "social justice movement" has turned into a horde of bullies. Face up to it like a fucking grown up instead of making excuses and hurling ad hominem attacks at people who criticize.

(Anonymous) 2015-12-19 08:19 am (UTC)(link)
0/10 trolling.

(Anonymous) 2015-12-18 11:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Fandom *was* more fun before the eggshells. True.

(Anonymous) 2015-12-19 12:02 am (UTC)(link)
"fun" is so powerfully unimportant. Safety is important. Social development is important. white cishet male tears at the loss of their fun is not.

Sounds like someone's butthurt over not being able say whatever they want with no regard for who's hurt by it.

(Anonymous) 2015-12-19 12:04 am (UTC)(link)
Sounds like someone who used to talk to everyone like they were reasonably competent people instead of a flock of special snowflakes with easily hurt feelings. Fandom was more fun when people took at least some responsibility for themselves, instead of putting their emotional well being on the shoulders of the internet collective.

(Anonymous) 2015-12-19 12:03 am (UTC)(link)
I for one am happy on-line violence is ending.

(Anonymous) 2015-12-19 12:13 am (UTC)(link)
Where are you at that "on-line violence" is ending? Because recently a group of people drove a person to attempt suicide because of fanart.

Ehhhhhh I gotta say, I'm not sure I agree.

I think what you could say is that the social justice movement has mostly been critical of existing structures of communication, and that in many ways insufficient work has been done on building new structures to communicate that are open and safe for everyone. And I think we do need to rebuild that space.

But like... I mean, the way it used to be is gone, and even then, what we think it was is more an illusion of memory than reality.

Is OP a squid?

Fandom was better back in the day if only because there was less whining. Now all these damn kids are on my lawn and their incessant bitching about shit they should scroll past makes me want to turn to the dark side.

The internet also used to be a lot smaller, the bar to access it was a lot higher, and it wasn't quite so easy to hide in anonymity. I should know, I've been on the internet for years, back when you had to use dial-up and graphical web browsers weren't a thing yet. I think has a lot more to do with how safe it felt than any supposed "policing".

(Anonymous) 2015-12-19 02:30 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, fandom was a lot more fun in my gaiaonline, neopets, and xanga days. I remember making shitty anime fansites with angelfire and bravenet. I felt like I had so much fun and freedom to enjoy stuff and meet others.

There were always fandom drama, but there wasn't all that everyone trying to shame everyone else for liking stuff that they don't. Now fandom just feels like a soulless chore with no fun allowed.

Back then using the internet for fun was a new thing and it wasn't as ingrained in peoples life as it is now. Now there is more of a hivemind and people can't decide shit for themselves, so they look to align themselves with whatever group that stands out the most and follow it blindly. Because of this I see so much hypocrisy in fandom. It's sad because people just can't think for themselves anymore because they are afraid of harassment or drama.

It's not even the actually problematic stuff (like racism or misogyny) that causes drama in fandom... it's mostly ship wars or SJW harassing young girls who never meant any harm in the first place.

This, honestly. I felt a lot safer being a queer female in fandom back then because it didn't MATTER that I was queer or female. Nobody asked, nobody cared, and nobody tried to police my identity (I've had people accuse me of lying about being queer because I wasn't offended by things that I was apparently supposed to be offended by).

I think maybe the issue is you're mixing fandom up with a multimedia platform. So you're inevitably getting bits of other things like life, religion, political beliefs- all that stuff usually hidden away in the off topic forum.

And because each post a person makes is front and centre, you'll get that topic overlap that is much more obvious than when interests were nearly divided across different platforms.
