I've only ever seen the English dub, which I love, cheesy pop songs and all. It'd be interesting to see it without them though and see if the movie feels different as a result.

Oh the feels this brings back! I saw the movie in theaters and cried at this part and felt really stupid about myself because I was 11 and didn't realize that it was the first rear of puberty's ugly head.

The prologue with Mewtwo in the Japanese version was AMAZING and really really dark, not just by Pokemon standards but by any standards IMO.

The rest of the movie was okay except for the scene pictured, which made me cry my eyes out in both versions because I am a dork like that. Especially when Pikachu repeatedly tries to shock Ash back to life...

I may have to watch the original version of Pokemon. I recently marathoned Digimon Adventure to watch Tri. It was the first time I watched the Japanese version, and I liked it better than the dub, which I remember nearly seemed to be almost a gag dub at times. I still really like some of the songs from the dub movie OST though. I have some on my ipod. I imagine Pokemon will probably be the same for me.

I *think* Pokemon the series was actually mostly very faithful to the original except when it came to transparent localizations (eg, yeah they're ttly donuts and not at all rice balls sure).

But the movie was a different story. The entire plot and the movie's main moral/message was changed, and a lot of really dark and ambiguous stuff about Mewtwo's origin and morality and motivations were changed or cut out.

Wow, I had no idea. I will definitely have to rewatch the movie at least then. Thanks Anon!

I cried at this part when I first saw this movie when I was 9. I actually didn't know Ash was going to be alright - the movie and the scene was so different from the normal "they almost died!" stuff in the show that I couldn't predict what would happen. Memoriiieeeess.

I've never saw the movie in Japanese, as it's very hard to find because there's a lack of Pokemon fansubbers out there.

However, I loved this movie more than Pokemon 2000. That one was boring to the point that I've fell asleep.

I thought the movie was good too. It felt like it stayed on the same frame of the series, but brought a more urgent, global scale to it. Mewtwo's plight felt like something more interesting than what the other movies are about, legendaries getting cranky and then being calmed down by other legendaries.

I think it's a great movie no matter how you look at it

(Anonymous) 2015-12-27 12:55 am (UTC)(link)
It was just a really odd choice of pop song. There's absolutely no way to connect "Don't Say You Love Me" with anything that happens in the movie itself. Just a really strange decision.

(Anonymous) 2015-12-27 01:35 am (UTC)(link)
Strange it might be, but if that was what it took for Marit Larsen's solo career to exist, then I'm not complaining.

What's the difference between the versions? Is there an in-depth comparison?

I've only seen the English dub, but I personally found it very well done with a good emotional impact. And that Mewtwo voice, mmm. Plus, I didn't mind most of the pop songs. Then again, I think the English version of the Pokemon theme is about a hundred times better than the Japanese one...

Not sure about any in-depth comparisons though a few probably exist on the internet. The major differences I remember are:

The main message: In the dub, the message is "fighting is wrong" which is kinda hypocritical in a show that is ENTIRELY about fighting and how fighting makes the people and pokemon grow and become better and stronger and happier. I mean, yeah, it meant "fighting to the death is wrong" but the distinction wasn't really explored enough to work as a good main message. In the sub, the main message is "all life no matter where it comes from (eg, whether born or cloned) is equal."

Mewtwo: In the dub he's a lot more sane, confident, and clear about his objectives and opinions. In the sub he's very confused and rather childlike, he mainly wants to lash out at humans and human trainers because he's so angry and traumatized by what happened to him. His personality is also somewhat different.

The Intro: A good bit longer and more explicitly talks about death in Japanese

(Anonymous) 2015-12-27 04:58 am (UTC)(link)
I've only ever seen the dub but the "all life is equal" moral was most certainly in there, Mewtwo outright says it

(Anonymous) 2015-12-27 05:21 am (UTC)(link)
ayrt

Yes, he says it at the end, but during the main part of the movie, and the big fight scene before Ash's sacrifice, the focus is all on how terrible it is that the pokemon are fighting. Which does make sense in context, but isn't exactly a moral that fits that particular story or villain very well.

I think you're referring to an intro that appears in the extras of the Dub release. I think it was cut for time restrictions in the full movie but even on the VHS, it appears at the end of the credits. You mean the one about the clones and the scientist's daughter right?
